  1. ALCON, Been shooting a 1100 TAC 4 for more than a few days and like the gun. Scatter gun sights, side saddle, youth stock and ezloader. Bought an M2 last fall have have shot it very little, 20" gun (I think 7 in extended mag) and feel that recoil is excessive compared to the remington 1100 with the same ammo. I know that the remington weighs a little more than the M2 but it still feels like the recoil system of the M2 is to blame. im thinking about parting with the near new m2 to get a FN SLP. I would like to know: Am i smoking crack to think the M2 recoils more than the 1100 How is the FN SLP recoil compared to the SLP Jon
  2. Look for slow powders with light bullets. Youre going to fill the case for sure (almost) in 9mm jon
  3. So I have been looking to up my game a little and wanted to refine my loads for a 5" M&P 9mm and an sti 2011 .40. After some research i looked into solo 1000, tg and N320. I ordered some 147 lead 9mm a while ago and patched together a load with 3.2 1000, federal primers and lead 147g bullets. I shot a match with the 3.2 1000 and 147g bullets. Recoil was soo good that it did not feel like i was shooting loads that would make 125pf. accuracy was great and like i said recoil was too good to believe. No issues with function. At the time i had no crono results; now i do. 5" M&P 9mm federal small pistol and mixed brass solo 1000 el paso tx, 4000ft 80 deg 4/3/2011 3.2g 877 fps 3.4g 920 3.5g 925 3.6g 947 I'm sold on the Solo 1000 in the 9 and i think this will be my go to load from now on. Not sure how it shoots in my g17 but i want a load that will make pf in both guns. Still cooking up loads for the STI in .40 but i think im almost there.
  4. Oh yea, dont drill holes in your gun for service rifle competition, external modification and now a match rifle per the rules.
  5. Federal switched from old to new brass. Old brass is marked .223 FC and looks like its etched in the cases. Thats great hard brass. New brass is marked FC and lookes stamped. Some years ago, 2004-5 federal made a decision to switch to a softer brass. Some say this is an attempt to prevent reloading as a "lawyerism", guys gun blows up with reloads, claims factory etc. I have been shooting AR's in HP for a long time and the best powder i have found time and time again is RL 15. 24.5 with 55's to 80's works great. Gives near max velocity with 80's and 77's. This was the AMU load for some time after N135 went to a faster burn in 98-2000. I think that remington 71/2 primers are also a little harder. Stay away from standard remington to avoid slam fires in your gun. my .02
  6. Service rifle with optics will shoot in another class that the iron sight guys. This is an acknowledgement that most US Service rifles have optics. .308 out of a gas gun is not close to what it is out of a .308 30" palma gun. US 1000 service rifle shooting is dominated by M-16's with 80g bullets and fast twist guns.
  7. my 5" M&P 9mm shot low until i whacked down the front sight. I filled in all the dots with jb weld and painted the things. Now if i can just over the light primer strikes ill be running strong. jon
  8. I was or am looking to shoot IDPA ESR so thats a PF of 165. 230's are ok at 725 but they are nothing like the same loads in a 1911. I know revolvers bark a little more but i dont have any issues with full power loads in a 686 so i take that to indiacte that its the N frame. I see all sorts of people shoot 627's in .38 super and i assume that just has soo much less recoil than the 625 with big, slow .45s. Ill look into these grips. Thanks for the help. Jon.
  9. All, Been shooting for some time now and bought a JM 625 about two years ago. I'm still searching for better grips. The JM grips hurt like hell with major loads. The exposed portion of the backstrap is wuite painful upon firing. I have sone hogue finger grips but im none too keen on them but recoil is better. I have small hands overall. No issues with an sti 2011, 686 or 1911's but this 625 is kicking my ass. Any suggestions on a nice grip for smaller hands that will provide a little more coverage on the backstrap? Thanks. Jon
  10. All, I have not loaded all that much .40 here in the past, mostly 9 and .45. After the purchase of a STI in .40 i had to load and i have buckets of brass. I tried some mastercast 180's with clays to start as well as 231 with mixed results. The clays shot well and was soft, however there is lots of smoke with my reloads. I suspected that the red lube on the bullets was to blame or just the lead. I had some WAC around and tried loading some up. 6g with the 180 lead put me at 1100 fps and a little hot to say the least but the smoke was gone. Dropped down to 5.5g and velocity is at or around 1000 fps. I think that ill try 5.3 next time and take a little more off. Function is good and recoil is not harsh, not like clays but the smoke cloud is gone. I have also had good results with 9mm, 125l in a glock at 1050 is soft as anything i have shot, dont recall the charge. Meters well through a Hornady lock n load and the powder is cheaper than some others. Anyone else with comments. sorry if this was already done. Jon
