This is what I used to do when I first started loading major. My major load was 7.5g hs-6 with 124g bullet. I’d load up practice rounds at 7 grains. Just felt safer to me at the time when I was just getting Into it. Now I prefer to practice with the same load, so the recoil/impulse/dot tracking is the same. I get once fired brass and I’ll load it 2-3 times before tossing is. But if you like to leave it after the first reload to major, but you’ll shoot minor reloads a few times then you’ll save some money buy not loading practice rounds to major. Probably would be wise to shoot some a few mags worth of true major rounds before a match, as it’s going to be a bit different then your practice load and you wanna be used to it.

I also shoot a lot of 3 gun matches.  That is another reason I am considering different loads. I have ran some drills with both loads and really can't see any difference in my times.

  2. I am just getting started in open and have been practicing with minor loads I have for carry optics (130pf) I have a load for major pf of 6.8 WAC with 124 Precision Delta bullets @1.160"  Should I load some practice rounds somewhere between these two or just practice with the major loads. I don't mind leaving the brass after it has been loaded to major PF.

I have a SPS Vista Short. Does anyone know what the screw size that holds the optic mount in place on the frame?  I've been told that most open guns are 5-40 but these are not 5-40.

I used the ones that came with the gun. I think they are metric

  4. I've seen that demo. My guns have taken some really bad abuse shooting 3 gun when I fell on them. I use their 1-8 scope on my rifles and have been very pleased with it. They sponsor several local shooters and have good customer service. I also use Vortex optics and have no issues with them.

I picked up one of these from Centerfire Systems when they had a deal where you bought one, and you got an SAS12 for free.

I've only taken to the range once so far, and was only able to shoot slugs, but no issues and it shot great. Overall I was impressed.

Been thinking about making some changes, but it's really just a range toy for me, at this time, so hard to justify the cost right now. I'm sure I will at some point.

How do you like the magwell?

The magwell works great. You have to modify the mags but this is a fairly simple job. Is you gas setting on 4?  It should cycle normal 1200 fps shells out of the box. Also check to see if the dust cover is contacting the bolt when it is at the back of its travel. I had to work on this area.

  6. Anyone else using these red dots. I have them on 3 different guns and they all have worked great until today. I was shooting a match using my CO pistol and the dot quit working. Changed batteries but it didn't help. It has a lifetime warranty but that doesn't help when your in the middle of a stage.

Yes those are 1/4 bleed holes.  I also have 2 5/32 holes in the barrel.  The grip is Sti that has been cut and trimmed on. With Dawson  grip tape.  It’s a very nice flat shooting gun

Thanks for the info. I just got mine last week and will probably run it stock for now. It seems extremely tight but functions as it should.

I don’t have a vista, but I have an SPS Pantera. My Sps mags run 100%. But 40 is much much less finiky then 9mm. Much easier to make a 40 and it’s mags run well in a 2011. It’s totally possible that 9mm sps mags will work just as well as my 40 mags do.

But why bother when sti cost exactly the same, assuming you’re going to change the guts and basepads. I changed out the guts in mine as the follower that comes in it are total crap. SPS mag is 57-90 dollars depending which one you buy. 18 for springs and followers and 30ish for a basepad. Sti mag tube is 59, 18 for guts and 30ish for a basepad. So the price is the same. One thing I can say about the difference is the sti mags are much more stout. The metal seems harder and a bit thicker. They’ll hold there shape much longer, and have a longer overall lifespan. And another thing, the new Sti mags run straight out of the package, no feed lip or body dimension tuning needed. Most people have to tune their sps mags.

Definitely utilize the 2 mags that come with the gun though. They’re a lot like the old and very desiresable Svi mags, they can possibly hold one more round then sti. The 140s that comes with it with a taran 7mm and the taran ultra thin follower they’ll hold minimum 25, if not 26rds. But like I said the basepad and sprIng an follower that comes with the mag are junk.

Thanks for the detailed information. I am ordering STI mags.

As far as changes for the first 10000 rounds no other than the POS mount it comes with. I put a90 degree mount on it. Last season I replaced the fire control with cylender and slide kit installed an sti grip and Dawson mag well aftc extractor  had 2 holes added to the barrel

Did the popple holes make a big difference.
