  1. Here is one:

2.1.8.1 Target placement should be clearly marked on the target stands

for consistent target replacement. Target stands should be

securely fixed or their locations should be clearly marked on the

    range surface.

You're off your game today or something. This rule is about range/stage management not stage design. Heck, the primary paragraph leading to this rule is addressing the concern of shoot-throughs.

4.6 Range Equipment Failure and Other Issues

4.6.1 Range equipment must present the challenge fairly and equitably to all

competitors. Range equipment failure includes, the displacement of

    paper targets,..

Again...nothing to do with what has been discussed. This is about range/stage/match management and it's addressing if a staple falls out (or is shot out) not stage design. Nice edit on the rule though. It goes on to talk about prematurely activated targets as well as steel falling. This rule DOES NOT address stage design at all.

ETA: I'll say it again. You step up to the line and roll the dice and you have the exact same chance of the last guy of rolling craps.

  2. Well...all I've got to say about it is this. No where in the rules does it say I can't do it. If making someone transition off of one target because of a random hit of a color/whatever and the arrays are equal for everyone and the chance of getting a color is equal to everyone, until someone shows that it is illegal, you can expect them from here on out if I design a stage.

I hear a bunch of whining about, "it's not fair!". Well guess what, then let's all shoot the same gun, same ammo, static positions so there's no movement, everyone gets to practice the stage weeks in advance and let's not award a winner and just give everyone a nice certificate of participation when they're done 'cause we don't want to have someone not have an equitable share of the prize table and/or enjoy their day in the sun.

If the only argument is the "luck" of drawing one particular color being better than another and that it's not equitable to everyone...the odds of EVERY person getting that color is the same. So how is it not equitable?

  3. And we wonder why that French guy keeps winning the World's?

Good night. It's the easiest memory stage you'll ever shoot. Don't shoot (given color) or (given card suit). It's an excellent exercise in target acquisition and transitions.

Oh well...let's just go back to 50 yard standards....wait...people bitch about that too.

  4. Tell me about it. I got a 'talking to' once for questioning why we have so many meetings. When asked what I think would be a better use of our time (attorneys and anyone that understands billable hours will get this), my response was, "I don't know...doing billable work that allows to keep the lights on, computers running and our co-workers paid would be a good start!".

Yes I sometimes lack the 'tact' button, but let's be honest that if you're going to layoff a butt load of people and then a week later burn up every manager's Monday morning with back to back to back meetings, what's the real problem?

When I had to sit in front of the man, I reminded him that I'm one of the few managers that actually made money during 2008 for the firm. That seemed to make the pill go down easier, but I was still told to tone it down. Again...got it. I'm aggressive.

Anywho...just frustrating. I really should go back to owning my own place. ;)

  5. So I've informed my employer that I am going to be going to school full time and that if they would like, I will go to a part time schedule w/ no benefits. That was 3 weeks ago and I start in 2. My supervisor as well as our HR director, has asked the 2 prinicipals in my studio what's up and nothing definative. My supervisor's pretty passive, and maybe I'm too aggressive, but this crap is old.

When you're someone that signs a paycheck, your job is to make the tough and sometimes unpopular decision. I should preface that I do not need this job. The GI Bill is paying most every expense and at the end of the month, I have to "find" about $600. Pretty easy all things considered.

Stefanie is more pissed than I am. We've agreed though to give the firm 'til the end of this week, before resigning. I understand that I am one of their best employees and it's why I've "survived" the house cleaning and 2 layoffs (their words) and don't want to lose me...but dang it...not making a decision (in my eyes) is worse than making a 'tough' decision.

  6. Oh...and another thing. To hell with classifications. I think they're stupid to begin with. Become a better shooter PERIOD and your classifications will go up accordingly. Remember...the guy that wins his class, didn't win the match. I'd rather win the match.

  7. As someone that designs many of these types of stages, I'm of the opinion that so long as every competitor is presented with an equal challenge, it's good to go. I ensure this though by having the same number of each target and the same number of each target in a given array.

  8. I won't say a couple of hours a week wouldn't help, but frankly is a bit unrealistic for most folks.

The biggest change I think you'll find is from a committed amount of practice per day. Like Steve Anderson says in his book, even if it's 10-15 minutes per day, every day, just like practicing an instrument, you'll find that 15 minutes turns in to 20, to 30 and so on.

Committed practice and compound that with a critical and honest evaluation of your performance will lead to huge and rapid gains.

  9. Bart - On the Invincible safes, Vinny got a call from one of his clients in Florida (I think) that has one of them. The guys broke in to the house and spent 4 hours (the cops determined this by the lookout guy's pile of cigarettes) trying to cut through the safe. In the end, they got through, but they didn't get everything that was in it. The hole was only like 8" square.

  10. Mark - That's funny as when hanging out with my brother when he was stationed down there, we'd watch the security force guys stalking anyone walking near the perimeter. My brother was friends with a bunch of those guys and they explained to him that they're just so bored that anytime something might look suspiscious they get a over zealous.

  11. My brother (ATC at Luke AFB for 4 years) would beg to differ on the positive sounds of F-16's taking off late at night after pulling a long shift (their barracks were about 500 yards from the flight line).
