  1. hey guys, thanks for the replies... and i'm in ny. just to clarify, i understand why some smiths get what they charge, and that is fine and well. but i do not want to send my beater 700 sps deer gun to (insert custom rifle shop here) to have the 24" barrel cut down to 20". i'm sure most of you got what i'm trying to say- an economical smith who can disassemble and reassemble a bolt rifle, and cut/crown/thread a barrel without messing it up. i had just that kind of smith, but he no longer has an ffl so i can't send him a barreled action. btw, i have a new guy question- is there an easy way to check if my posts have replies to them? the only related function i found was "my last 10 posts". thanks in advance.
  2. oxymoron or does this exist? i understand that you get what you pay for... but if all i'm looking to do is cut down and re-crown a 700 or 70, i'd like to believe there are competent smiths who are willing to do it for less than $100... can you help a brutha out?
  3. big "me too" for the warren sights and compact mag base pads- the standard base pads change my approach angle for my reload and throws it off for some reason...
  4. this may circumvent your question altogether... good article on cross-dominance here. hope it helps!
  5. *newbie alert* (aka- dont crush my spirit) what is "tactical"? if it is what looks better when wearing a blackhawk vest with your limited edition rambo knife, then i'd vote for weaver, as that is definitely the more martial-arty of the two stances. if the real meaning of "tactical" is what most effectively gets rounds on target, quicker and more accurately, then i'd have to change my vote. the body armor issue doesn't really prevent mod-iso, but encourages it. straight up iso is arms locked out, which you can't do with a full body armor setup with plates, so you become mod-iso by default. the big disadvantage of weaver seems to be recoil management with rapid-multiple shots, and shooting on the move. and you can make a mod-iso stance universal for all weapons platforms- not just pistol. the whole police-video thing should stop this argument cold. for a more local example, i like to point out how good shooters shoot on the move and transition from target to target.
  6. link is dead- this is ready tactical's old url, but now he is selling online exclusively at skd tactical. really nice stuff!
  7. ok, i'm a noob so go easy on me i had a famous gm tell me that when he drops the slide on his 1911-type after "clear", he holds the trigger back to keep the hammer/sear engagement from jarring. if that is going to make your ro's uneasy, the easy answer is ease the slide forward. when the gun is firing, the round getting picked up and sliding up the breechface when chambering is going to retard the forward motion to mitigate the jarring (when compared to dropping it on an empty chamber), and if you're like most shooters you'll still be holding back your trigger anyways and manipulating the sear reset after the new round is chambered.
  8. personally, i prefer da/sa. you just have to learn to roll the da trigger as you press out. the sa part is easy and self explanatory, but once you learn the da trigger and how to prep it on the way to full extension, there is no measurable disadvantage for me versus sa first shots. the dak or dao triggers seem to give you the worst part of the da shot with a long reset, every time, without the advantage of the follow-up sa.
  9. +1 / 5 gallon buckets, but i keep polished brass in there b/c it gets heavy and i dont like moving them around. they stay in one location and i scoop out what i need to reload. for uncleaned brass, i use boxes that you can acquire for free at certain public service locations. they make them in various sizes and they are manageable in size and weight when you are carrying them from storage to tumbler, and then back to long term storage. also, i keep my stuff in an unheated garage, so i stopped using the sterilite bins from walmart- they tend to crack and/or shatter when its cold out.
