Home built CNC Mill - Gonna make a 1911
kevinj308 replied to StraightUp_OG's topic in General Gunsmithing
All of us are learning the hard way lol. I think if we had better tooling all of that would be true. But with my vise definitely not. The X is repeatable, the fixed jaw is always parallel to my machine but I've found the part I put in the vise isn't always that way. And the movement in the moving jaw is frustrating. A new vise is on my 2015 list for sure. Glacern is a front runner right now. As long as we're on the topic of level and square. If you do get that grizzly mill you're gonna have to spend some time getting it squared up. The Z column bolts to the back of the x/y base with four bolts. I had to shim mine in the y and spend some time tilting it in the x before it was cool. They don't come squared up out of the box. It wasn't really that big of deal, I had to take the column off to to get it in the garage anyway. Fully disassembled I could hand carry all the parts, can't do that with a bridgeport lol. -

Just finishing up the CNC conversion. Gonna clean it up and put some paint on it. Hopefully it's going back together for the last time lol. Looking forward to having a usable mill again not just a project scattered in the garage. -

I know for me I have to really pay attention to the level in the Y as well. I've got an el cheapo vise and when it tightens it lifts on one side, the moving jaw. I've adjusted the tension screw as much as possible but it still lifted like 0.010" when tightened. I ended up putting shims behind the tops of the vise jaws so the jaws have a slight angle to them. Now when it tightens it holds pretty level but I still tap it down as I'm tightening and then check with an indicator. Just trying to say that Brian is dead on, you gotta check after you think it's ready to go. Took me a while to figure out why my cuts looked so bad lol. Wish Orange made a single 4", anybody have/like the Glacern vise? -

I think that's a g0704 with DRO. I've got my 0704 in pieces right now so if you've got any questions on dimensions or specs let me know! -

I don't know anything about Midwest but you might want to search a couple of the cnc forums like cnczone.com. Certainly somebody out there has bought one. I'm loving my 0704, perfect size for me. Congrats on the fun times ahead!!!!! -

yep You not running DROs Kevin? No, i had planned to go cnc from the start so just stuck with the hand wheels. I'm in the middle of converting the mill now. I've got the z axis running from the pc, Need to tighten up a few things here and there while I've got it apart then get the x and y done. Hoping to be running in a few months at the latest. This case took me a while, LinuxCnc, mesa boards and kelling drivers. ALL new to me lol. Learning curve was steep! -

Thanks it was fun. It was the easiest way to explain to my wife and some co workers what I've been doing with a mill in my garage. -

Mostly for cnc. The tool holder butts up against the spindle so the tool stick out is repeatable. You can have all your tool lengths pre measured and you don't have to re zero everytime you swap a tool. There is a 3/4 r8 collet in the spindle. All the tool holders have a straight 3/4 shank on them. I bought them in anticipation of being cnc. Figured money on r8 collets was better spent on these. Been really happy with them. -

They're a Chinese copy of tormach tts er20 holders. There was a thread on cnczone that turned me on to them. Got them on eBay. I'll find the link if you like. It's somewhere in this thread but it would take days to find lol. -
Thanks! It was fun to make, I've never done that before. You inspired me with that job you did. It looked awesome!

Made this for fun, maybe help somebody understand the process a little better. Learn so much everytime I turn that mill on, it's just awesome. -
Thanks and you're welcome! There's so much info out there for 1911's but not so much for glocks.

My wife always asks me what I'm doing in the garage, so I made this for fun. Maybe help somebody understand the process better. This was my second Bomar insall, first on a 1911. Wow there's a lot to learn everytime. Kevin

I used a Dawson Precision but cut the bottom of the windage block down by .030". Helped it get lower on the slide.

I'm sure it is. I'm just playing with software and starting to shop for the electronics for my mill. Still turning handles here. Hoping to be cnc by next summer maybe. Fixed the pic, thanks -

I followed Dskinsler's lead and put a Dawson Precison Bomar on my factory Glock slide. We were both looking for dimensions online and didn't find any. I made this basic drawing, hopefully help the next guy out. That and BlindHogg's awesome instructions. I made a basic 3D model to generate the drawing, if anybody would like it just pm with the file type and I'll try to oblige. Kevin g35 bomar.pdf -
I followed your lead and put a Bomar on my G35. I know we were both searching around for dimensions so I drew this from what I did. Factory Glock slide and a Dawson Precison sight. Hopefully help the next guy looking for info. This is what those dimensions look like, rear blade just at the back of the slide. Kevin ETA I made a basic 3d model as well if anybody wants it just pm. g35 bomar.pdf

Cnc wouldn't do what you want with a ball end? That angle plate does look super easy to set up, and the price is awesome! -
