  1. Back in January I started working with Wilson Combat on a group pistol purchase for the Rangers. The pistol markings took several months to come together and we started placing orders in July or so.

I placed my order (for a light weight Professional in 38 Super) which shipped on Wednesday night.

OK, it should be here on Thursday......right? Its always overnight shipping on guns, right!! WRONG!!

I tracked my package and learned from WC that UPS now allows them to use 2 day shipping.

So, now its Friday and the long awaited day has come!!!! I mope around town all day, waiting for the call from my FFL. After the usual time passes, I check the tracking number and learn the shipment was delayed and won't be here until Monday. I know it is the weather but it still makes me sick!!

    Does this sound familiar Sethmark!!

  2. I've been in Law Enforcement for around 17 years and have probably been shooting pistols for about 20 years. As a cop, I have always been above average when compared to my peers.

I started shooting USPSA in February '08. Since then, with very little training, other than local matches, my shooting has improved greatly. SWAT guys may not care for our use of cover, "in the open" reloads and such, but its the best practice/training I've ever had.

  3. I have been kicking this question around in my head for several months now. I certainly want another limted gun to take to matches as a back-up gun. But does a shooter really need one? How many of you have used a back-up pistol during a match?

  4. I bought a Tripp Cobra mag for my 38 Super Trojan. I wasn't diggin' it much, there was so much tension if slammed a loaded mag in with 1 in the chamber that it would stop the slide on the way back. After some putz'ing with it, I figured out I had 11 rounds in the mag. :surprise:

Has anyone modded one to run 11 rounds? I wouldn't think it would take much. Just enough to allow that last round to compress a little.

I use Tripp Cobra Mags for my 38 Super duty pistol. I've not tried 11 rounds though. IF you figure it out, let me know

  5. I shot my 5th match with my Tripp Limited gun today. It is still running perfectly. One of the stages, required a reaching/leaning shot to the right. I am left handed and for some unknown reason, I switched to my right hand and shot the two targets!! It was not planned or required, it just happened and cost me several seconds.

Anyway, despite my mistake, I won my first (local) match in limted today. There were only 6 people shooting limited. I am still unclassified, but should be soon.

There were 30 shooters in all and I finished 11th overall. BJ Norris was shooting production and won production/5th overall. It is pretty darn cool to be listed on a ticket with a World class shooter!

Thanks again to ALL of you for your inspiration and motivation!

  6. SV machining is the best in the industry. Their finished guns are almost too pretty to shoot! Brandon has the operation running well now and I have been very impressed by the guns coming out of there. I LOVE my limited SV and will Never sell it. Almost had them build me an open top end, but decided to build my first ground up gun instead since I already had an STI frame anyway.

    So, start saving!

    Thanks!!

  7. Dear Diary... its been 11 days since we talked....

Range time today. 200 rounds of slow fire. WATCHING. A few load related hiccups that I worked out last week are gone for good.

Splits aren't improving yet, but they're more accurate and I'm not jerking the trigger so bad right now. Gotta work more on transitions. I watched the videos of the big matches I shot this year and I waste a LOT of time between targets.

Tripp gun is still running like a scalded dog. If only I could be nice to it.

    S.

At least you went to shoot!! We're having 20-30 winds today which isn't the best outdoor sports weather for me!! Good luck and keep shooting. Any more hammer follow?

  8. First response would be " YOU HAVE A TRIPP GUN!!! "

Second response would be "YOU HAVE A TRIPP GUN AND WANT SOMETHING ELSE!!! :angry2: "

All kidding aside, you have a Tripp gun? :roflol:

Ok, Ok, nothing wrong with SVIs in my opinion other than the price but they do use all good parts to the best of my knowledge.

Yes I've had my Tripp gun for a few months now and have put 2000 flawless rounds through it. Yes I know, most of you shoot 2k a week or month. Oh well, at least I'm trying. Anyway, I want a back up, (spare) limited gun. I've attempted to trade a few folks out of a gun on this site with no luck. So, I thought I might try another angle. The SVI would be around $2800.

  9. Work took me to the Dallas area today so, I stopped by SVI to take a look. I have always liked the looks of SVIs, but rarely see anyone shooting one in limited. At least not in my area.

Anyway, they took the time to build/price me a 5" sight tracker on the gun builder program and I was pretty impressed with the price. I also had the chance to feel the aluminum and stainless grips they will be using! I think I'm going to start saving money/selling things to buy one. I'm not unhappy with my Tripp gun at all, but I would like to have a backup gun for matches.

What do ya'll think of the SVI limited guns?

  10. I have a Springfield that is plenty accurate... but I believe in production guns.. it is something of a lotto.. few win many loose.

Wilson Combat just released a new 9 mm 1911 that has a 1" at 25 yartds guarantee. If you don't mind the price:(

I've got my eye on an STI Rangemaster in 9mm. It may not be legal for any of the games, but I think it would be a blast to shoot and help get my wife more "into" shooting!!

  11. I've been certified since 1994, with around 50 ocean dives and I think you did a very nice job with your photography. I can't imagine taking those with only 4 dives on my log book!!

  12. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers.

The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him:

"Why do you carry a .45?"

    The Ranger responded :

    "Because they don't make a 46."

    Personally............I prefer 38 Super!!

  13. I traded a recoilmaster out of my Tripp custom for what I thought was a 1 piece tungsten guide rod. Today when I broke it down for cleaning, I discovered it was a 2 piece also. I put a little blue locktight on it..........hopefully it will hold!!

  14. Sorry to post on an old thread, but I had another related question......Will the lighter springs cause more wear on your pistol? If so, I guess that is the cost of doing business.

BTW, I'm shooting an Edge based 40 also. For the last 1500 rounds it had a 13 pound spring (tungsten FLGR , bull barrel) and it shot fine. I replaced it today with a 14 pound that I had on hand.

I'd be glad to go lighter (11-12 pound) but I don't want to damage my pistol.

  15. Trace, sorry to hear about the droppage, but I'm damn glad to hear that you are dryfiring!

Well.......stuff happens. And it was my first dry fire session in a long while. I took most of the summer off from any kind of shooting. Not because I'm good enough to take off, but because I must take every opportunity to use our boat to it's full potential. Which means......With 12 months of payments and only 5-6 months of Wakeboard season.........we have to use it every chance we get during the season.

But anyway, I made it out to the Range in Kilgore today for a little organized practice (steel challenge style) and the Tripp pistol is still a tac driver. I was a little rusty, but the pistol was 100%. I went over the 1000 round count today without a single malfunction of ANY kind.

  16. Well, it finally happened today. I was practicing reloads in my workout room, over a well padded mat. After one of my runs, I leaned too far to pick up a magazine and knocked my pistol out of the Ghost holster!! I looks OK, but it looks like it landed on the back left corner of the rear sight. Of course it didn't land of the mat.

I hope the sights are still on. I guess Ill find out tomorrow.

  17. Let me premise my opinion with a few facts:

    1. I don't intentionally break laws. (with over 15,000 laws on the books who knows when we are breaking them?)

    2. I have never been arrested, or even cuffed. (My last ticket was over 5 years ago)

    3. I steer clear of bad situations that could get me in trouble (IOW I keep my nose clean)

    4. I've had a CCW and an FFL, so the gov't knows I got the guns.

    5. I really admire what cops do, and have a ton of respect for the job (heck I've thought about being one myself, but I've SEEN the schitte they deal with {worked in two ER's})

That being said, if a bunch of LEOs were competing at my club, I might not go as often. I would rather not hang out with them. They get to use (and trash) our range (yes its private) for their own "training" which is mostly just wasting ammo that I paid for. I get dirty looks for the race rig.

Lets face it, cops can only hang out with and be friends with other cops. Most feel there is a division between "us" and "them", as they may be forced to arrest any one of us non-LEOs at some point; and conversely, us non-LEOs may be arrested/questioned/interrogated/RodneyKing'ed by a LEO at some point.

My range is a VERY rural place, and we generally know our sheriffs and state police officers, and the vast majority of us locals like them. Heck, I like them and I still have a stand-offish attitude. They don't bother me, I don't bother them. But they also have the power to destroy my life in a New York minute, so I'll keep my distance, if you don't mind.

You certainly have a right to your opinion and I'm sorry that some LEOs have "trashed" your range and wasted the ammo that "you" paid for. Last time I checked though, I/we pay taxes too, so we also pay for the ammo you speak of. Trigger time is trigger time, so at least they are at the range and not the coffee shop!!

Don't be paranoid, give some of them a chance at your friendship. We don't bite. I for one, truly value my friendship with non LEO folks. I have a few friends that are not cops, but not many. And......the sad fact is, I file just as many cases on cops as I do "run of the mill" criminals.

We generally have better things to do than arrest, interrogate, question or whip the sh** out of innocent people too.
