  1. I have a couple and here is what you can do.

    1. Squeeze the mag in a vice, but only at the bottom. I did not do this, but I did do #2

    2. push the base pad on and see when it will stop, when it stops, look at it and see if it is becasue the lips are too wide or too thick. If they are too thick, use a file on the top of the lip, not the bottom. If they are too wide, start filing the sides of the lips, then try it again. Most of the time its the rear of the lips (bottom of mag, not feed lips) that are too wide.

    Hope this helps

    Randy

Thanks, it looks like they are too thick. THe base will start, but only goes a mm or so and gets stuck. I started with #2 but stopped. My file wasn't taking off much metal and I was running out of time anyway. I'll try again tonight.

  2. I was in Florence today to qualify so I paid a little visit to Dawson Precision afterwards. While there I picked up a few +1 base pads for my Eagle. Two of the magazines worked perfectly with them, but I suspect the lips of the other two are a little out of spec. Does anyone have any advice on how to fit the magazines to the base pads? I tried a little with a file and a stone but gave up before I did any damage.

BYW, Super Dave showd me how to fix the slide lock problem with the squeeze of a pair of pliars. Now all 4 mags lock the slide on an empty magazine.

  3. My FKS-11 kit is 11 coils long, (on my website also) and as I stated you can use them "as is" without cutting coils. It is usually not needed for function, but it will decrease capacity by one or two. It is just a lot of extra spring to get into the mag and get the base pad on at the same time, I can precut them for you if you want, if you order them from me directly. If you are having Brazos do the installation, then they will certainly get the job done for you. Call me for full details and suggestions.

Thanks again, I looked at your site a little too fast and missed the FKS-11 the first time. I will give you a call today.

  4. Hi rangertrace,

I would suspect the semi wadcutter ammo is too long for the mag tube, and this is why it jammed in the mag where the "Magtech" ammo did not. Changing the spring and follower to any thing else will not fix a "too long" of ammo problem. If you do decide to change to the Grams Follower Kit, use Part # FKS-11, as is for now. You can cut up to 2 coils off if using them in a "126" tube, but this will only need to be done for capacity reasons. The follower is designed to be tuned for slide lock operation. There are many threads and posts about slide lock and mag function issues here, but I would be happy to discuss any of your magazine issues by phone if you want to call me direct.

Thanks for your response. I noticed on the Brazos Custom site that he sells 11 coil kits for the shorter tubes. Would that one be acceptable? I would like a more reliable and more durable follower/spring for duty use. I don't feel comfortable cutting coils myself and I would rather someone else "fit" the followers. I'm a certified 1911 armorer....but when I have access to the pros, I would rather have the pros do the fitting.

  5. For a duty gun get the magazines tuned, no way would I carry a 2011 type with ANY brand of magazines in it that aren't tuned. The magazines just aren't consistent enough.

It will be shot a lot before I actually carry it at work. I have plenty of other "duty" guns. I would just like to get the magazines "right" without spending a lot of money. I've already got $2,300 tied up with it and 4 magazines. The gun was tuned and Chromed by Virgil Tripp. The mags are stock STI and compared to his Cobramags.....they are pretty rough.

  6. I just received three STI magazines for my Eagle in 38 Super, which gives me a total of 4. I loaded the magazines to capacity and cycled the live rounds through the pistol to test for function. With Magtech ammo they all cycled perfectly, but 2 of them did not lock the slide back.

I then tried a box of WWB with a sort of semi wadcutter bullet. I could only load about 5 in the magazines before they would jam up inside the tube! I suspect bad ammo, but I'm very inexperienced with STIs. However, the same ammo would work fine in my SS mags in my CQB.

    Any ideas?

BTW, this will be a duty gun not a game gun.

  7. I have both set up on belts right now. The Universal Shooting Academy units get my nod. If you are a skinny guy the difference is less but the Universal Shooting Academy holders keep the mags out from the body and allow an easier grab for a stouter body profiled person.

I have to agree with Merlin. I am not stout and prefer the USA because they are easier to grab the mags without grabbing some shirt with it. I am now using the Gugas - only because USA do not offer it in blue. <_<

Thanks for the replies. I ordered 4 from USA this morning. Manny said they would take a small amount of modification to make them left handed, but he would take care of that for me!!

    Just my .02. :)

Also, are they ambidextrous? The girl who answered the phone at USA did not know for sure and Frank has not returned my email yet.

    Thanks Merlin,

I'm kinda in between I guess. I'm 5"9", 193lbs. So that would probably be a wash. Is there any difference in durability or parts availablility if something breaks or falls off?

  10. I have the Bladetech holster for the Edge series pistol and have never used it. I bought it to accommodate my STI Tactical 5.0 with the full length light rail for shooting IDPA but have yet to shoot an IDPA match. My Tactical also has a full bull bbl so it's not IDPA legal anyway. I can hook you up with the Bladetech carbon fiber version without the 5 week wait if you're interested.

Do you happen to be left handed?

The reason I was thinking about a Kydex holster as opposed to a full blown race holster is the same reason I'm buying a limited gun and not an open gun. I'm a cop and I'm trying to keep my competition equipment fairly similar to my everyday work rigs. I read somewhere on here that there may be advantages to using the Kydex anyway because it forces you to get a proper grip from the start. I am certainly open to advise if someone thinks I'm making a mistake with Kydex. I've looked at the CR Speed holsters online and at the matches and they just seem sort of alien to me.

  11. Well let me rephrase then, the question was "why does is appear that 99% of USPSA shooters choose S_I guns over Baers, Wilsons, etc?" that part is fine, the part I found silly (but I guess misinformed or inexperienced with USPSA would be a better adjective ) was the "other than capacity" capacity is the answer to your question. That may not be the answer your looking for but that's pretty much it. Lots of guns are similar in quality, accuracy, reliability, availability, ease of customization and price, none combine all of the features with capacity.

    Joe,

Thanks and I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.

  12. Well in a game that combines puts speed into the equation asking, "Other than capacity" is silly considering that is the main reason the STI design even exists.

Why would you respond to a "silly" post/question? I'm not downing STIs, I just bought one and have another on order.

  13. Has anyone tested the accuracy of their stock STI using a ransom rest? I'm just curious if they compare to the accuracy of Baers and Wilsons that give an accuracy guarantee. Other than magazine capacity, why does is appear that 99% of USPSA shooters choose S_I guns over Baers, Wilsons, etc?

  14. I received my Eagle last week and should get my Edge by the end of the month. Is there a Kydex holster out there that will fit both of them? The Eagle fits in a Wilson Tactical Assault holster that fits my SS guns. I'm just curious if there is enough flex to fit the full length dust cover on the Edge.

Makers and model #s would be appreciated. The holster will be used for Limited Division in USPSA.

    Thanks.

  15. Why do you HAVE to run the two miles in under 19 minutes? The only way to train for running is to run. Not walk, swim or bike. All of the above mentioned exercises are great for you heart, but they won't help you maintain you current level of running fitness. It sounds like, based on your age and training speed, that you may be a natural runner and would be able to meet the 19 minute time even if you walk for your cardio.

  16. I had been talking to Virgil quite a bit because he plated my engraved Baer and my CQB (duty guns). During one of our conversations I asked who he would recommend to build me a limited gun and he offered to do it. I don't really know how his "specs" compare to other custom smith's "specs" but his price and turn around time were quite a bit less. Either way, I know it will be a nice, reliable pistol and there won't be a lot of them at the matches. I think it will be kind of cool to have something different. He told me that he was not going to start building guns full time. If they do, I'm sure the price and wait will go up quickly.

  18. My Wilson 5" CQB, 38 Super came with a 12 pound spring. It was a blast to shoot with ball ammo, but had some minor feeding problems with Winchester Silvertips. I went up to a 14 pound spring (which is standard according to Wolff) and the problem went away. I have not shot any major PF loads through mine though. Most of the ammo I shoot is around the mid 140s PF.
