  1. Let me premise my opinion with a few facts:

    1. I don't intentionally break laws. (with over 15,000 laws on the books who knows when we are breaking them?)

    2. I have never been arrested, or even cuffed. (My last ticket was over 5 years ago)

    3. I steer clear of bad situations that could get me in trouble (IOW I keep my nose clean)

    4. I've had a CCW and an FFL, so the gov't knows I got the guns.

    5. I really admire what cops do, and have a ton of respect for the job (heck I've thought about being one myself, but I've SEEN the schitte they deal with {worked in two ER's})

That being said, if a bunch of LEOs were competing at my club, I might not go as often. I would rather not hang out with them. They get to use (and trash) our range (yes its private) for their own "training" which is mostly just wasting ammo that I paid for. I get dirty looks for the race rig.

Lets face it, cops can only hang out with and be friends with other cops. Most feel there is a division between "us" and "them", as they may be forced to arrest any one of us non-LEOs at some point; and conversely, us non-LEOs may be arrested/questioned/interrogated/RodneyKing'ed by a LEO at some point.

My range is a VERY rural place, and we generally know our sheriffs and state police officers, and the vast majority of us locals like them. Heck, I like them and I still have a stand-offish attitude. They don't bother me, I don't bother them. But they also have the power to destroy my life in a New York minute, so I'll keep my distance, if you don't mind.

You certainly have a right to your opinion and I'm sorry that some LEOs have "trashed" your range and wasted the ammo that "you" paid for. Last time I checked though, I/we pay taxes too, so we also pay for the ammo you speak of. Trigger time is trigger time, so at least they are at the range and not the coffee shop!!

Don't be paranoid, give some of them a chance at your friendship. We don't bite. I for one, truly value my friendship with non LEO folks. I have a few friends that are not cops, but not many. And......the sad fact is, I file just as many cases on cops as I do "run of the mill" criminals.

We generally have better things to do than arrest, interrogate, question or whip the sh** out of innocent people too.

  2. What little success I've had getting these guys to the matches, has been attributed to these things

    1. I tell them up front that yes they will suck. Everyone does the first few months. No one will make fun or look down on them, because they were all new once.

    2. I give them good equipment. They are set up with the best. I think a lot of new shooters with poor equipment start off thinking of all the money they have to spend to get up to speed. I give them a rig to keep until they get the equipment they need.

    3. I praise their preformance in front of other LEO's

I have a good friend that is a PYSHC RX. He gave me a good prespective on this subject. He said that everyone lives their life like a movie. Most people want to be the hero of their movie. When a LEO goes to a match and does poorly, he is not the hero of his movie. So the hero only pi scripts that assures that he maintains the hero status.

    Does that make sense?

It makes perfect sense to me. I visualize a lot about "use of force" shootings and I've never lost in one of those shootings. I guess you would want to boost their confidence, not make them less confident. I do believe if they shoot more matches, (get past the initial learning curve) it would only boost their confidence and make their annual qualification seem like a joke. I know it did for me and I've only shot about 6 matches.

  3. My local club set up a match for our Sheriff's office SWAT team. They shot it SWAT style, not USPSA style, but they loved it. It was much more tactical that what they usually shot. SInce then, several of them have made it out to the match to watch. I don't know if any more of them are shooting the matches, but it certaily made them more interested in it.

I think there are three reasons most cops don't want to shoot matches on their time off:

    1. A lot of them can't afford the ammo.

    2. They may not like having a 65 year old man, kick their butt (happens to me all the time).

    3. They carry a gun 40+ hours a week and don't want to mess with it on the weekend.

    That is just my opinion.

I love to shoot. I can afford the ammo or at least enough to practice some and shoot matches. I don't mind getting "out shot" buy more experienced shooters.

  4. Hello: I hate boarding up my house. It is a pain in the a$$ but that is what you have to when you live on the coast. Thanks, Eric

    Eric,

A lot of my buddies from my area are down there working. I hope to stay up here, but may be sent there this weekend as well. Take care of yourself and the family. I'll PM you if I head that way.

  5. I'm going to be having a custom gun built as a memorial to my grandfather, who passed away on Thursday. I'm planning ot have a small inscription on the slide and was thinking about ideas. Has anyone done anything similar, have pics or ideas?

    S.

    Seth,

Wilson Combat is currently building some custom 1911s for us. They recently purchased some "in-house" engraving eqipment and I have been very impressed with the results. If you were wanting more of a show piece or duty gun rather than a competition gun, I would call John May and tell him what you have in mind.

  6. VERY nice! What's it got under the engine cover?

I grew up with a 1961 Chris Craft 17' ski boat...mahogany hull and all, 283 Chevy Vette engine that we hot-rodded a little bit...straight inboard that was lots of fun. That thing only wanted to turn one direction at low speeds, but sure had a nice wake for skiing.

It is a V drive with a PCM/vortec 350 engine. It puts out 343 horse power. They have a 6 liter ZR6 that puts out 390 HP, but it would have been another 3 grand or so. These boats are not fast at all. It's a tow boat, not a speed boat. THe way it is propped, the top end is around 40 mph. Cruise is around 20-25, but it can pull a lot of people at that speed and seats 12 passengers.

  7. I thought I would show ya'll a few pics of what keeps me away from the range and matches during the summer. This is our second boat from Correct Craft/Nautique. We live within 45 minutes of 5 lakes and during the late spring, summer and early fall, we spend most of our weekends on the lake. It is a great time with my wife, family and friends.

  8. One of my favorite pistols (for women) is the Sig P225 9mm. If she isn't going to compete with the thing, it would be great. DA/SA with a decocker. Single stack grip and Sig dependability. You can buy the used LE models from Sig dealers for about $350.00

If she wants to compete with her pistol, PLEASE DELETE MY POST!!

  9. I missed it if you said where you were now (A,B,C, or what). I'm with you on a lot of your stuff. I'm unclassified for now in limited. I hope to start in the C's but may very well be a D.

I've shot for a long while. I've loved guns since I was a boy. (I'll turn 40 this year) And I have to shoot decent to qualify for my job. Twice a year.

I prefer to excel at shooting as my life (or yours or more importantly...my wife's) may depend on my shooting skills!

  10. Well, the same fellow that has all the 1050s, has a SDB for 40S&W that he offered to loan me. All I would have to do is buy all the related items. Manual, scales etc.

Sounds like that might be a better option that I originally thought.

  11. Last week I received my CED7000 and used it for one dry fire and one live fire training session. It is a great little timer and I was excited to begin using it. During the live fire session, the START button on the top, quit working, while the start button on the face of the timer continued to function.

Part of me wanted to live with it and keep going with the smaller "face" button, but the AR part of me insisted on calling CED for a solution.

Well, CED lived up to their reputation because I recieved my replacement timer today, along with a shipping tag to return the defective timer!!

Thank you CED for your great customer service!

  12. Thanks guys....for the responses.

Good advise Bart, I'll hold on to the Colt...and I'll check with AA next week and see what their LE prices are. You're right about the budget, I've bought a Wilson CQB, a STI Eagle and a Tripp limited gun since November. No wonder my wife wants to kick my A**. :surprise: I assured her I wouldn't buy any more guns for now, buy I need to feed the ones I have. I feel its my DUTY to do that as cheaply as I can!!

AS far as reloaders go, I think ya'll sold me on the 650. My shooting partner and I have talked about going in 1/2s on a reloader. I thinks its time. I only wish Brian had a package deal for the 650 like he does for the 550. If anyone has the time to scratch down all the items needed (for a 650) for reloading 40 cal, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks again,

    Trace

  13. OK, I think I have enough room in the corner of my garage for a work bench and reloader. So here is the question,

Do I go with a 550 with a case feeder or a 650? A friend of mine (who has 4 1050s) says the 650 is too techical and has a problem with the primer system. However, I like the idea of a powder check station.

The same friend says to go with a 550 and add a case feeder.

What do ya'll think. By the way, I will probably have to sell a Colt 70 Series to finance this purchase. Would it be worth it?

  14. I just ordered another 3000 rounds of plated range ammo for my shooting partner and I, from The Hunting Shack. The price went from $178/1000 to 195/1000, plus it is about $22/1000 for shipping. Total cost is around 21 cents a round for factory reloads. It is expensive, but still about 30% cheaper than I can buy it locally.

Can someone tell me the CURRENT approximate cost for loading 40S&W with plated bullets? Assuming you already have the brass.

We are thinking about going in on a reloader and I'm just trying to get my mind around the actuall savings, if any.

  15. As of today, I have put about 750 rounds through this pistol without a single malfunction. The magazines have even been 100% so far. I ordered an additional one from Brownells and it works just as good at the ones that came with the pistol. Granted the mag capacity is not near what HSMITH's are (I hope Santa will bring me a 5 pack of his mags) but at my level, I just wants the mags to work...

Anyway, I've extremely happy with the pistol. It is nice to know that for the most part, all I have to do is work on my skills and not worry about a sub-par pistol giving me problems. VIRGIL TRIPP-YOU ARE THE MAN!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I've added dryfire and a timer to my training. I've read Brians book and I'm currently reading Saul's book (Thinking Practical Shooting). And I'm shooting as much as I can. Hopefully one day I can use this pistol to its full potential!

  16. ...I need to treat the targets 7 yards and in more like free candy...

For me, at least, it's way too easily to sling two shots at a close target and assume I saw what I needed to.

(Take them aggressively, just don't take them for granted.

    )

I like the way you said that!!

  17. Is there any place in the Florida area-or outside-that

you have used to chrome a hand gun. I have a SV frame

that I want to have chromed to match the top end.

Google Ford's guns in Florida. They did one of my revolvers and I think they do all of Dawson's pistols. I think it is fordsguns.com They did a fine job on my revo and its SUPER bright.

  18. I have a fiber optic front site on my limited pistol. It has a small set screw or roll pin on the right side of the blade. It doesn't have the middle support for the fiber. Any ideas what brand it is? I was told it was an EGW but their sites appear to have the middle support.

  19. I have a Tripp tuned/chromed Eagle in 38 Super that I carry on duty. The pistol itself is extremely reliable and funtions/shoots as good as my Baer or Wilson. I decided to carry the Eagle because of all the practice I do with an Edge. I wanted to keep my duty gun and competition gun as similar as possible. Not to mention that if "IT" ever happens, having lots of bullets in your gun is a good thing!!

With that said, I do have a gremlin floating around in some of my 126 mm magazines. Just as soon as I recover from a pistol purchase, they are going to spend a few days with HSMITH.

  20. Hey guys,

I'm running an experiment that I've been thinking about for awhile. I'd like who ever wants to, to start adding in these WODs to their training program or fully adopting it as your entire dry fire routine for the next few months.

Check them out and post your results, comments, or videos (links) in the comments section.

    Thanks,

    Jake

    Jake,

I enjoyed your site and the information on it. You're now save into my favorites and I will visit often. Please forgive me for this question but, what is WOD?

  21. I finally made "B" in open. It took me 4 years or so. I am very happy and can't wait to shoot some more. All donations (monies) accepted. Thanks to the members of this forum who answered my questions. What a great sport!!!!!

Good for you, I look forward to making "b" in limited one of these days!!

  22. Good job!! I'm glad for you. GO get that GM card!!

Its probably a pipe dream, but my goal is to make Master in Limited by the end of 2010. I have a LONG, LONG way to go. But I have a great time learning from the more experienced guys. The byproduct of all the practice is it makes me look like a bada** when we qualify at work!!

Harmon and Bart are two of my "cop" heroes!!

  23. Two or three years ago, DPS started a mandatory physical fitness test for commisioned officers. You have to have a current, passing PT test in your file to take a promotional test or get any kind of raise. It was met with lots of resistance from the older employees who are near the end of their career and haven't worked out since the Academy. But, for the most part, we have a young Department and everyone knows cops should workout anyway.

There are two tests. The primary test consists of:

1.5 mile run in under 16 minutes

300 meter run in under 65 seconds

35 sets up in under 60 seconds

25 push ups, no time limit

    19 inch vertical leap

165 pound (or 65% of your body weight) bench press

and a short obstacle course in less than 21 seconds.

The other test is a job scenario simmulation. You don't get to take it unless you've failed the above test a couple of times or you have a letter from your doctor. It basically has 3 parts where they time you pushing cars, dragging dummies, running over fences, etc. Its not a "cake walk" but it doesn't pound your joints like the 1.5 mile run and the 300 meter run.

It doesn't take much of an athlete to pass any of that. But some of the females and really out of shape employees have been challenged. I've always worked out, (weights and cardio) so it was no big deal to me.

However, last July I tore my ACL and joint cartilage in my left knee after a bad landing, while wake boarding. I had my ACL reconstructed and micro fracture surgery in September and can no longer "run" for my cardio exercise. I've been limited to the elleptical and the bike for cardio and subsequently took the job scenario test in Austin. I was worried about how the knee would hold up to the amount of running required in the test, but it all went well.

This will definately give me more confidence to move a little faster on the USPSA stages that require movement.
