On November 12, 2011, the Central Florida Defensive Pistol Association (CFDPA) and the Central Florida Rifle & Pistol Club are hosting the inaugural Citrus Challenge IDPA match in Orlando, FL. I have to add another thumbs up for Dan Burwell. He's done both of my M&P's that I use in competition. The first was the full sized 9 and when I got the Pro the trigger was better than stock, but nothing compared to Dan's work, so he did that one as well. Great work, good guy, and he can even shoot ok too. Daniel

OK, so I have been a SSP shooter since I started shooting IDPA and I am thinking of getting a new gun (S&W 686 SSR) to shoot some SSR from time to time for fun. What I am wondering is what are you SSR shooters using for ammo? Based on what I have found, plain jane .38 special ball ammo will not make power factor (125,000). So I am wondering if I am missing something. I assume that most of you are loading some hot .38 rounds or downloading .357 brass. Thanks, Daniel

OK, My father is having an issue with his new Pro. As background, he lives in NY State and is saddled with the 10 round magazines. His issue is as follows: - Gun loaded with one in the chamber and a fully loaded 10 round magazine inserted in the gun (he’s shooting IDPA in SSP). He pulls the trigger, the gun fires and ejects the spent case but it fails to feed the next round. - He said that the slide stops at about the mid-point of the top round in the magazine, as if the slide had enough energy to eject the empty case, but not enough energy to strip off the top round. - Also, this is only an issue for his three magazines that have the new follower (the ones marked with a “9”). His one magazine with the older follower design works fine. He said that the older design seems to have a little bit (1/8” or so) of extra space vertically when fully loaded, where the new followers are 100% packed in with no extra space. - Other than some light polishing on the trigger bar and firing pin block plunger, the gun is stock. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have would be appreciated…and he isn’t moving to a free state without magazine capacity laws so you can skip that one. Thanks, Daniel

Like many othe people's Pros, mine developed the extration problem after a good bit of reliable operation...in my case it was about ~1200 rounds. I replaced the extractor with the SSS extractor and installed their extra-power extractor spring at the same time. So far I have 281 rounds of Remington UMC 115 gr. ball through it with the new extractor and it has been 100% I am not going to say that the problem is fixed until I get to ~600 as once the extraction issue started the failure rate was once every ~250-300 rounds. Good luck, I hope you get it working.

I own both types. My belt holster does not meet the IDPA holster requirements, i.e. there is daylight visible through the kydex belt loops when I am wearing the holster. Not wanting to get dinged at a major match, I purchased the paddle holster and have not looked back.

Now that looks like a memorable stage! I would love to read the stage description.

I have to commend the BOD for their hard work. These new rules seem pretty clear and straight forward. Personally, I am happy to see that my IDPA production gun (M&P with a Burwell trigger job) will be compliant with USPSA rules. I'm not sure how much of a consideration this "inter-compliance" between the two sports was in the development process, but it is appreciated. Well done!

When I became an SO, durring training we specifically discussed the issue of the magazine disconnect in the HiPower and were told that disabling it is a violation. Based on that, I would disagree with you that changing configurations from one config to another is not a violation. I agree with your example of the beaver tail safety, but the way the rule is written and what I have been told by my area coordinator the rule does encompass the mag disconnect. I'd like to hear what IDPA HQ has to say about it. Daniel

Lugnut, I agree that enforcing this rule is very difficult for SOs. They (or at least I) don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of what guns do or don't have disconnects and if you don’t know how a particular gun comes from the factory you can’t enforce the rule. But for instance, if the SO notices a competitor shooting a HiPower without a disconnect and he knows that disconnects are a fairly common feature, the SO can ask about the safety. If the shooter says that it came this way from the factory then so be it, but if he says his buddy took it out, then that is a different situation. It’s like enforcing round dumping (not to open up another can of worms). If a shooter takes an extra shot on a series of targets and gets to reload at a more convenient position, it is very difficult to prove he/she was intentionally round dumping and not making up a shot. But if you hear someone analyzing the stage and says “Hey, if you take an extra shoot here you can reload there instead,” it is a different situation. I am sure you would agree there are much more important things for an SO to pay attention to when running squads through a COF. Daniel
