My club runs a monthly PCC multi gun match ,where I have used SBR's for many years. Recently, with all the PCC mania going on, I started to wonder if a longer and heavier upper or complete rifle would provide faster splits than my 7.5".It has been driving me crazy researching all the new options with barrels, receivers, BCG, buffers, springs, until this last Sunday's match when I payed careful attention and saw no benefit with the shooters tricked out race guns over those of us with tricked out SBR's. If your buffer and spring are correct for your ammunition it's a wash between the two. SBR's are cool and portable and you can always add a longer upper later, if you fill the need IMO.

Im using Freedom Munitions 147 gr RN in my 14.5" GMR13.  I have not chrono'ed it yet. Very soft shooting, relaible and accurate. 25 yd zero drops 8" at 100 yds.

I,m running the same with my SBR and my pistol. They both performed the best over the 115gr and 124gr during Bill drill testing.

For our education, mind sharing what did end up being the problem?

It was the trigger part connected to the bow. The original trigger insert was difficult to remove, it was stuck. I had to slide a small crescent wrench across the back of the part of the trigger that is connected to the bow, and while holding that I used a small gun smith hammer to knock out the insert. Turns out ,I bent the back of the trigger to the left where it connects to the bow. With my fingers I tweaked it to the right very slightly and bingo.

  4. I disassembled pistol to change out the trigger insert. The old insert was hard to force out. I can't see any damage done to the bow or the main body of the trigger connected.  I have only started to reassemble with the trigger, mag release and grip pushed on the frame when I noticed the trigger does not freely move back and forth in the frame.

I reassembled it anyway and attempted to dry fire. The trigger sticks in the firing position and you have to pull back the trigger with your fingers. Any clue to what happened?

  5. I purchased a comp for a sub gun in 9mm. I thought in full auto might benefit me during a sub gun match I used to shoot. It did nothing, I took it off and on more than once and still couldn't feel or see a difference. I called the company that sells the comp and explained my experience and when asked what model/caliber I had purchased the fellow on the phone and someone else in the back back ground ,erupted in laughter.

However, the other reasons for a comp have merit IMHO.

  6. If you are using Grams and want the slide to lock back, as I do, then notice the dremel tool that is being used in the Brazos link to grind the ledge off. That is what I use but instead of using the sides of the tool to get rid of the shelf, I put the bottom of the tool on top of the shelf to lower it to promote slide lock. I take it down until it will pass the test with the slide removed and inserting the magazine in the frame with 2 bullets, stripping the top bullet off with my finger to see if the last bullet ,when it comes up ,trips the slide release.

Then you have to test it during live fire because during recoil the shelf is still not low enough sometimes. If that's the case, while you are at the range, continue by scraping the top of the ledge with pocket knife for example ,a little at a time ,until it is reliable. If you are worried about the cons of slide lock as described by Brazos ,use Dawson base pads. Those pads will prevent any over insertion. If you like, you can also use Dawson's mag release button that prevents over insertion, as well.

It may not be popular in IPSC circles to want slide lock but for me my reload is faster from slide lock than after hearing click first, because I screwed up.

  7. I run a 12# wolf spring in my 40 with a 180gr @170 PF based on bill drills.

    For my 9mm, based on Bill drills, I run a 8# 147gr @ 130 PF.

If I was running a 40cal @ 130 PF , I would test Bill drills with the 12# spring to start going all the way down to 10,9,8 pound springs , to see which poundage tracks the best.

  8. Try putting a 15# or 17# mainspring in. Then probably a 9# recoil spring. You should be good to go.

After trying a 7#, 8# and 9# spring with a 131 Pf 9mm load, the 8# tracks the best. Try the 8# and 9# in your gun.

  9. By lowering my back sight as far as it goes ,my firing pin stuck protruding beyond the breech face. By raising the back sight a few clicks ,it retracted. Evidently the back sight put pressure on the firing pin stop that put a bind on the firing pin.

    I'm curious, is this common?

  10. I use freedom munition.com for 40 180gr RNFP @176 power factor for $12.00 a box plus shipping. Not only is it close to power factor I was loading for limited div, it is close to 2005 prices for box of 50.

I also like their 147gr 9mm for 3-gun. Their load on that is very soft. It is barely over 130 power factor.

  11. Well, I went through the frequently asked questions, the spring thead from the beginning, other forums including u-tube and have performed three of the most common ways to check for recoil bind and nothing is wrong. However, my Dawson tool-less guide rod for bushing gun does not allow the spring plug to bottom out on the guide rod plug. I guess using the Dawson tool- less is the exception to the rule about spring plugs should come in contact with the guide rod head to prevent spring bind.

  12. Basically I'm asking if it is normal with a Dawson tool-less guide rod for the spring plug to not bottom out on the guide.

I thought if the spring plug did not, it meant the spring was to long, am I wrong?

The gun shoots fine, but I'm worried I might ruin something.

I don't know if this is a clue but I took the guide out, reassemble the gun ,pulled the slide all the way back and marked it on the frame. I reinstalled the guide and the slide pulled back to within 1/8 inch of the mark.

  13. Unlike reverse plugs for my bull barrel 2011's with guide rod and my spring plug guns with bushing with out guide rods, the spring plug on my 9mm can't come any where near touching the back of the guide rod.

Does it matter that my guide is the Dawson tool less for bushing barrel? Also, if I am supposed to clip several coils off the recoil spring will it lessen the poundage? If clipping is necessary ,it would be several coils, like I said, it's not even close to bottoming out.
