  1. I did it at a match last Sunday. Luckily I was squadded with a buddy who was shooting a gun I sold him, so I figured his ammo would work in my current gun :)

Or do you mean out on the course of fire? That would suck more.

  2. Follow-up to my own post/question... I've loaded about 700 rounds so far on my SDB with mixed range brass, and I've had a grand total of TWO not chamber-check...

    NO ISSUE WITH THE M&P!

That's awesome! Have they all run in a match with a mag all fully loaded up? When I sold you the dies, remember that thing I said about the tolerance stack up? All of my rounds would case gauge, but when I put 20 rounds in a Tanfogilo mag, the first 5 would nose dive and hang up on the feed ramp. After I started single staging my brass on the EGW U-die I had no problems. This was before the GrX and Bulge Busters. Happy shooting!

  3. Hi Paul,

I used Competition a lot last year with 200 gr. MG CMJs, and liked it a lot. Then I discovered it is very reverse temperature sensitive. The load I was using was 168 PF at 60 degrees, but only 159 at 90 degrees.

That's a great data point to have - I'm trying to develop a load with a 165 gr CMG and Competition. I started WAY too low at 4.2, 4.4 and 4.6. 4.6gr and a 10 shot string didn't even average 900fps! Next trip to the range I'm going to try 5.0 and 5.2. I'll note the temp as well since your data shows that there's a temperature sensitivity.

  4. I tried rice a few years ago. Besides being weird taking something out of my pantry to clean the brass, it didn't work terribly well. I think I read some guys are getting their walnut or corn media from sandblasting suppliers as opposed to pet shops to save money.

  5. Should hold 13 round IIRC. Have you taken the base plate off, removed the follower to see if there's a burr somewhere? Or maybe it's a Cal-legal mag with a dimple preventing more than 10 rounds?

My standard thing when I get a mag is to go through the steps outlined in the Dawson Mag tuning kit. Basically using some 400 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of aluminum to deburr the inside, deburr the feed lips, make sure the lips are right, check and make sure nothing looks weird with the spring and follower. Usually I put in a Grams Spring/follower and on a couple mags still use the stock floor plate.

    Sometimes these things take tinkering.

  6. I appreciate all the responses, you guys are a wealth of information. Since I live about 75 miles south of "UW Mitch", I might try to catch up with him sometime and look at his JPL pistol. You guys keep up the good work and hopefully I will see some of you on a range someday. Thanks!

I would be happy to schedule a time after a match for you to shoot my JPL - maybe other open gun guys would be willing to give you a similar test drive to compare. Mine is a long and heavy. I know some folks prefer a short and light. That's the beauty of trying different guns out side by side - you can see what feels better for you. I usually try to hit TriCounty and Dundee - rarely do I make it far south enough to hit Albany. PM or email me.

  7. I would shoot a few local peoples open guns to get a feel for what you like. When I had JPL build my open gun, I tried about 5+ different configs of guns. It's a lot of money to spend on something you haven't test driven.

  8. Don't get caught up in the "get one more round" race.

+1 to that. Possibly a thread drift but...I have yet to find a course of fire that required 22 rounds (aka Limited) or 31 round (aka for Open) to be shot only on paper with no opportunity to reload in a transition. I have run into courses that require 22 rounds, but there's usually some steel on the course and an opportunity to reload. So I'd rather reload and have a little buffer in case I don't hit all the steel on the first shot.

  9. When I started loading I was very particular. After years of reloading 9mm for matches I figured as long as it case gauged and had no visible defect I'd shoot it. When I started loading 9Major I separated the known once fired from "everything else". At the time I worked at an indoor range where 95% of the brass on the floor was from factory ammo. The problem with reloading 1x fired is that if you're generating it yourself, you need to be shooting new factory ammo. Since I no longer work at the range, I just buy 1x fired brass for 9Major and load "everything else" off the ground.

  10. I got one here off the forum from Scott and before that bought one from a local airsoft store down the street from work. They don't carry KWA anymore, so I was happy when I saw Scott selling an identical gun. Gonna put a C-more on one of them to get a similar sight picture and grip to my open gun.

  11. I have two of the KWA 1911 double stacks - basically an STI 4.25" Tactical clone - I like them. PTP looks like a traditional single stack 1911. The double stack frame may feel more like the XDm than a single stack. I'm sure you'll be happy either way.

  12. I shoot a multithousand dollar gun in Limited and get beat by folks with relatively stock guns. It's not the equipment but the guy behind the trigger. If you're shooting both, with a single gun, I'd keep the set-up consistent between the two. You're going to be faster that way than having two different draws with the same gun. Just don't forget when you're shooting IDPA that you can't press the mag release until you're behind cover (this was always my problem after I started in USPSA).

  13. In my JPL 6":

    4.6gr Titegroup, 180gr MG JHP, 1.18" case length == 169pf

--note out of my 5" EAA Witness Limited Elite this load was about a 159pf a couple years back.

Just got myself of a case of 165gr MG CMJ's an some lbs of Ramshot Competition that I'll need to work a load up for.
