  1. I'm a new RO, and I'm focusing on the gun and the trigger finger. In RO class they said let the RO running paper worry about FTEs and fault procedurals. I'm sure with time I'll start to be able to pick up on more but for now it's "safety first". Aspire to be like some of the more senior/experienced ROs who really to seem to see 'everything'. I guess it's a Zen thing.

  2. I was emailing back and forth with Brian about buying some brass. The next day when I went to the website to place my order, the price had jumped $10! Bait and switch? Fear not - the price of brass had gone up but being a man of his word and a good guy, he honored the price we had discussed. In a world that people are more and more out for themselves it's nice to see that in our community people operate on at a higher level.

Oh and the brass - out of an entire flat rate box of 40S&W only a two aluminum and a few 9mm cases - not bad at all. Heck of a guy to deal with at a very fair price (but you probably already know that). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him!

  3. I keep my untumbled/uncleaned brass in 5 gallon buckets. I have cleaned brass stacked in clear rectangular bins with lids stacked on some shelves, and also cleaned brass in Costco Powdered dishwashing detergent containers (I think they're about a gallon). FYI I had some problems with the dishwashing detergent containers corroding my brass until I soaked them in hot water and left them to air out for a couple weeks before using. The cost of the clear plastic bins is so low, it's a better way to go.

  4. I've always wondered how much trouble it would be to get a new cylinder and if necessary a new barrel to do the same conversion to my 686 38 super PC.

Let us know if you do decide and what the cost breakdown was.

    Albert,

For USPSA anyways, isn't 38super gonna be easier to make major for revolver? And since you'd be shooting on moonclips, it's not like you gotta chase the brass around. Any reloading only requires a change in the seating die.

    I'll trade you my 9mm J-frame for your 686 ;)

  5. I'm using the Dillon locking ring on the EGW die. Doing it this way I was able to get the lock ring on top.

    Trodrig

Thanks for the suggestion! I had contemplated that, but I'm gonna use the Dillon die in station 1 - but it occurs to me I could use the locking ring off the crimp die I'm not using!

    Mitch,

I use that technique with a Lee FCD on one of my 650 toolheads. Works fine...

    Later,

    Chuck

Thanks Chuck! I'll give a try as my FCD is also near the end of it's threads.

  6. I just scored a used 650, which I'm very stoked about. I'm loading 40S&W first. My old set-up was to run my brass through the EGW die on my Lee single stage, then reload using my SDB. So now I should be a LOT faster. But when I put the U-die in station 1, and screwed it down until it touched the shell plate, I ran out of threads on the top for the locking nut. Backed it off just a bit so I could engage the locking nut, but now I'm not sizing all the way down (which is sort of the point).

Any reason I shouldn't/can't put the locking nut UNDER the tool head? There's plenty of thread exposed there, and it seems like it would clear.

    Thanks,

    Mitch

p.s. I think next time I run the machine, I'm putting the Dillon die in 1, U-die and 2, and move powder to 3 as suggested in some other threads.

  7. I may be in the same boat (although coming from WA). I'm told by a good friend in the Bay Area (who is an LE) leave my AR behind, my Saiga, even my 10/22 with the folding stock. Can't bring any full capacity mags into the state either. My open gun (still being built) will be an "assault weapon" as it's a pistol with a removable magazine and a threaded barrel. I'll likely just be shooting L10, Production and Rev if/when I move, at least in the beginning until I get the ins and outs figured out.

  8. Simple Green - NO ON ALUMINUM,rinse thoroughly.

Ultrasonic - NO ON PLASTIC GUNS

So I wonder if after I do my parts in the ultrasonic with the dilute simple green, if I do them again in very hot water as a rinse before my Mpro7 cleaning if that would help get the residual Simple Green out?

  9. I know the ultrasonic isn't good for plastic guns. But I don't really understand what's in Simple Green that makes it "bad" compared to MPro7. I was using MPro7 in my ultrasonic, but it's so expensive, I was trying to filter it, etc etc. So then I switched to a very dilute solution of Simple Green. My process is:

Solution: a splash of Simple Green to about 32 oz water

-- "Soak" for about 5 minutes,

--Run the ultrasonic for about 3 minutes, then pull the parts.

--They're mostly clean, then I rinse by spraying MPro7 and cleaning like I used to before the ultrasonic (spraying MPro7, going at it with a toothbrush and qtips).

--Put some CLP on a Qtip or shop cloth, wipe parts down

If I understand the problem is that Simple Green strips the metal clean, does putting MPro7 cleaner on it afterward add anything back? If I'm relubing the metal afterwards, what's the harm?

  10. Saw I had a flat tire the other day. Went and changed it yesterday (I don't need to drive everyday). This morning took it to the tire shop to get patched. They said "bad news for ya" and showed me the crack in the wheel. So I'm searching for a TSW Turn 5 in grey 17x7 wheel with a 5x114 bolt pattern? I just need one, but they've been discontinued for 3 or 4 years, and I'm having a hell of time finding one. d'oh!

  11. USPSA has made a deal with a company to produce Match Quality ammo for members.

    Contact them at...www.precisiondelta.com

    Richard

Precision Delta didn't have 38 super listed on the site. I told Long (my buddy) to call them and ask. I'll also recommend he check out Adventure Sports locally and Atlanta Arms.

    Thanks guys!

  12. A friend of a friend just got a Trubor Grandmaster (neither the friend nor his friend shoot uspsa) and needs some 38 Super ammo that makes major or is at least relatively hot to work the comp. They've been shooting it with some Federal or Winchester factory 38 Super, but it's not pushing the kind of gas volume USPSA guys like.

Who are some of the sources to buy 38 super loaded major?

    Thanks,

    Mitch

  13. I bought a Mec600Jr. for about $50, thinking I would load some nice light loads for trap for my GF. The cost was about equivalent of buying (not in bulk) and the time to load 100 rounds was about an hour. I loaded a couple hundred and haven't touched the loader since. Not worth it I think unless you're shooting a LOT and gonna spend some money on a good machine, and the ammo you load is customer tailored to what you want.

I just did trap, so that being said, what's the process for loading slugs, and the economics of that versus buying low recoil slugs (from Federal for example)?

  14. I tried some 243Win brass in a little ultrasonic cleaner I bought off ebay a number of years ago. The main problems was as mentioned above - I could only clean a little at a time. Lead reside/dust in my tumbling media was a major concern for me - I was stupid and didn't change my media for over a year, and it was dust, and I wasn't wearing a resparator etc etc etc - I did however use drier sheets as a dust filter. I've since got new media, which I'll switch out frequently, wear a resparator - and the latest trick I read was to add 1 shot glass of water to the tumber to hold the residue from becoming airborne dust particles. I've ordered a sample of Ledizolv, so I'm going to try putting some of that on the drier sheets and our pour a little in with the tumber to help keep the lead down.

  15. (and don't forget about all that 40 S&W brass you can shoot too !)

Oh yeah, that's something I forgot to add. The 610 is very versatile. I have a lot of Fed Small pistol primers, but not a lot of large, so I just go and make a batch of 40S&W. I want a really light load for plate shooting - so I mix up a batch of wimpy 40S&W. Wanna go hunting? Mix up some hot 10mm. It really is great, and no chasing around all your brass!

    ~Mitch

  16. Very cool! Your set-up sounds super versatile - Limited, L10, IDPA-ESP. Heck, get another topend with a comped barrel and a JPoint and have an easy cross over to Open!
