  1. Oh yeah, this one tips the scale EMPTY at 48.5 oz! My labmates are always giving me a hard time about being on the HEAVY side! Guess I'll have to load up my big stick and see what it weighs! (and those of you out there shooting in A1, don't ask a certain Bob Loo to measure his big stick at a match!!!)

  2. Looks good Mitch. I hope you have tons of success with it!

Which division will you be shooting at Area 1? ;)

    mattk

I'm sticking with Limited at Area 1. I haven't shot any classifiers for open, so I'm not changing my game plan.

    Mich,

You will not be disappointed with JPL. I Have been shooting one of his 9major guns for over a year now.....flawless. Now we just have to do something about that "UW" thing attached to your name.

    Go Cougs

    Keith Tyler

PS see ya at Area 1

I know when Albert shot your Open gun, it made him start thinking...and we all know how dangerous it can be when a guy starts thinking... :roflol: I'll soon be a 3 time UW alumni! I almost had JPL paint it purple and gold! (not really)

See ya at Area1 - I love watching what people who really know what they're doing do their thing!

Hey didn't you buy a Meopta Gift Certificate from me last year Mitch? Or I bought something from you.....Don't know... That looks like an expensive box of goodies you got there. I'll be running my poor mans XD at Area 1 this year.

Might have bought something off you. Are you from HPD originally? I have an Uncle with HPD.

Picture time. And I'm realizing that I should've taken these pictures BEFORE BASTARDIZING JOHNS WORK...I added the blue skateboard tape I got online. MY SKATEBOARD TAPE JOB LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED  , but I'm decently happy with the color scheme and how it feels. John's work is of course superb!

  3. While I've got one of my subjects watching a training video...

Some quick pictures I shot this morning with the point and shoot, because I know there are people eagerly awaiting some pics. I'll have to clean it, and put the skateboard tape on the grip etc, then do some "real" photos.

  4. Because I know it's shocking that I didn't post pictures last night when I got home from the range and having dinner w/ the plates crew (it was 1240am when I stepped in the door!)...

First pic: It's done - I'm so excited I'm trying to hand over money, get some paper work done, and John has the audacity to tell me - "why don't you take a look at it to make sure you want it!" :surprise: "well, I guess I'll take it, it's only exactly what I ordered"

Second pic: Happy and Sad JPL. Happy because he got paid, sad because he's having to let one of his kids go. Can you imagine the kind of man who's willing to sell his kids!?!? :roflol: Well I couldn't be happier with it John!

Third pic: JPL followed me to the range to help me sight it in. It runs, it shoots, and it's now zeroed. The only thing holding this puppy back is me! Thanks JPL!

Oh so let me justify why this thread is is "Open Gun Technical" and not Gallery (and if the mods want to move it to Gallery that's fine too). So I have heard a mixed reviews on 9mm Major being problematic, but JPL really seems to have it figured out. The guns that John's built in the past that I got to test (thanks Sue, Dave, Bruce, Floyd, Will, everyone else I've forgotten) all run. I've watched these guys shoot at matches, and it boils down to them. For some people the issue is "if" their gun will run, so there's always a potential excuse. So now I've got no excuse ;) This gun is spec'ed out just the way I wanted based on shooting a number of different guns, and I know it's technically sound.

Last night at plate league I shot it. In my over excitement, I wanted to "race" and run fast like Tom Kettels and Gunter and Sue and all the other fast people I see shoot open guns. Well you can only shoot as fast as you can get the dot on the plate, and I definitely got carried away just wanting to squeeze (read flinch/flail) the trigger as fast as I could. The gun is not magic. When I put the dot on the plate and press the trigger without disturbing the dots position on the plate, the plate did fall down! AMAZING!

  5. As I said I ordered some parts from Brownells, but I realized they're really not set up to support the competitive shooter the way SC and SSI are. It's really a good idea to support the guys who support us, otherwise they disappear. :D

Off soap box, and counting down 8 hours to picking it up! Since I can't help myself, here's some pics from about a month ago when John got all the major parts fit up. It blows me away - he just throws the box of parts into his tumbler and this is what falls out. Or was it the magic gun fitting machine he threw the parts in? Right...it was all those years of expert knowledge and ability and putting in hours of work on my raw parts that led to a perfect fit up. Slide feels like it's on greased bearings - no wobble but not binding - just right! :D

  6. No they don't. A couple items were special ordered. The unfortunate part is that some items are still on backorder, but the good news in Rene at SSI had them, so I just added those items onto my order from him. Brownells sells just the stock STI tubes or complete mags. Better off to order the pads and guts from guys like Shooters Connection or Speed Shooters Intl.

  7. Are you going to do the shake down at Marysville?

    mattk

I'm anticipating UW giving me another degree (three strikes you're out) so my family is coming up for Commencement, which means I probably can't make it to Marysville. Maybe I should just drag my gun-hating Mom to the match so see can see what it's all about! :D Gonna shake it down at plate league tomorrow - good thing we just instituted "open gun" at plates (to include any gun with optics, including 22lr and pistol caliber rifles!).

  8. I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow. Here's two preview pics of how an open gun starts life. Gotta thank Chuck and Mike from Shooters Connection, Rene from Speed Shooters International and Rhianna from Brownells for great customer service in getting my parts.

  9. Yeah, what's up with our weather this year? The Q13 Morning News in Seattle had a reporter out at Snoqualmie where it looked like the middle of fricken winter. I want our summer back!!!

  10. A dedicated press set up for each caliber would be nice if cost and space were no issue. For myself, I have very limited space and cash resources, so I would go with a caliber conversion over another SDB. I'm "living the dream" right now, with a 650XL set up for 9mm and 40S&W and my old SDB set up to do large primer 45acp and 10mm (I still only have space to have one mounted to my bench at a time). Good luck on deciding what's gonna work out for you.

  11. I can't answer your specific question of velocity as an indicator of pressure. How do the primers look? Are they flat? Are they flowing? Or are they just normal looking. I would SUSPECT that one could go some amount over book and still be "safe" but I don't mess with that too often.

If you had no problems making major with Titegroup, why'd you switch?

  12. Doesn't help you now, but on your next build you could do a RAID set-up. There's different way of setting up multiple disks and different RAID configs, but the simplest is what I've got - Basically two disks that mirror each other, so if one drive dies, you've got the other with all your data on it.

    Good luck Howard!

  13. There are always things to do. Most of them matter less than we think they do.

    Embrace the down time.

    Get better.

That's something I need to learn to do. I'm so schedule driven these days that any little kink gets me bent out of shape.

Carina, I hope you heal up soon! I just had an oral surgery today and am on 'soft food only'. Boo!

  14. Sorry to hear it Henning. At the top of the game, I imagine you guys are pushing yourselves and equipment to the absolute limit, and sometime unfortunately you step just past that invisible line. I hope you have fun with the rest of your trip. Relax and enjoy!
