  1. I am starting to get into loading 40S&W at 10mm lengths as well. I have been told that the wall thickness of a 10mm case is greater than that of a 40S&W case. The warning I was given was to NOT attempt to get near the upper end of the "hot rod" 10mm loads if using a 40S&W case because of risk of case rupture.

  2. I guess in USPSA Limited you don't ever shoot the gun dry, so EGW made a slide stop pin that's much more tough than the factory, and eliminated the the extra work of making it lock the slide back. When you think about a whole slide stop, versus the EGW pin, you can see why it'd be easier make the pin. Some guys set their guns up to never lock back in order to avoid premature lockback (that's what I understand anyways). For IDPA I don't think it's a good idea.

  3. Welcome to the forum. I've done some of my best shooting with a Witness. Great pistols for the money. You might want to think of getting an EGW Slide Stop Pin too.

With the EGW slide stop, the gun won't lock back on the last round, which is "needed" for IDPA because you're required to shoot to slide lock or do a reload with retention. If the SO sees you speedloading with the slide forward, you're probably getting a procedural and then gonna have to explain why your gun doesn't slide lock. Just my humble opinion anyway.

Welcome to Hennings House here on the 'net!

  4. My limited in 40S&W doesn't like factory length ammo - it either gets stuck feeding, or in a couple cases jumped right out! I am using 10mm tubes, so that probably has a lot to do with it. I'm loading about at 1.20 - quite a bit longer than factory. It's been gobbling the stuff up! Only downside is I can't shoot ammo that's not mine. Oh well, probably better that way.

  5. I have always kind of wanted one of John's guns, but after spending some time photoing this one, and really getting to scrutinize all the detail things, it really put me over the top!

You know that VW Bettle commerical from a number of years back, where it's this guy with a little bettle on his head and as he goes through the day it just keeps growing and growing. That's me, but with a JPL Open gun :D

  6. John let me photo this gun that he built for Sue:

Here's what John posted on the NWPPA forum about this gun:

Sue has wanted a 9mm Singlestack for quite a while and we talked alot about what she wanted on it and what I thought should be included. She made every decision on what was done, I just gave her some options. This has taken me a little over a year from the time I got the frame until it was completed. I worked on it when I had time around other projects (not much!).

    Some details:

    Caspian frame and slide

    Schuemann Classic barrel 9x19

    S&A flat magwell

Ed Brown safeties, extractor and mag catch

    Extreme Engineering trigger parts

EGW ejector, slide stop, bushing and collar reverse plug for a bushing

BoMar rear and Dawson front sight

    SV ITS short curved trigger

    Ahrends Dymondwood Raspberry grips

    DuraCoat HK Black finish

The frame is checkered 25 lpi. The slide is flat topped and serrated 40 lpi in an "Arrow" pattern, the bottom edges have a 30 deg. bevel on them and the top of the flat is "french bordered". The rear of the slide and the sight blade are serrated at 50 lpi. to match the original serrations in the BoMar. The cocking serrations are my Signature panel cut. (Traditionalists probably won't like them but they work/grip better than anything else I've tried.) The magwell was opened up to match the frame and not "blended" so that i could get a good radius match to the front strap. The checkering on the magwell was pointed up so that there is "grip", both front and back.

Hope you enjoyed the pics! I know it was hard to give the gun back to him!!!

  7. I'm using 10mm and 40S&W mags with my Limited. Actually have mostly 10mm mags. I think the diagnosis of the mag release is correct. On my 9mm Match, the mags wouldn't fully seat, so I had to massage them a little (filed the notch where they seat with the mag release) - all good now. I'm a lefty and love these guns!

  8. Thank you guys for all the responses and insight. I definitely will speak with John about his thoughts on a gun for me, as well as shoot all the open guns I can. In the mean time input from the peanut gallery on the internet will have to do ;)

  9. Mitch,

All of your questions come down to personal preference. John will build a fine reliable pistol. How long or heavy or where it balances are issues only you can answer after having shot them in various configurations. You might want to shoot a few friends pistols before ordering.

None of the items you list have listed can fit into the universally better/worse category, as they are all personal preference items. About all that you can do is try as many examples of each as are available and decide what YOU like best.

    Good luck!

I guess that's the custom part of a custom gun. With knives, I just collect 'em. I've users, and display pieces, I buy based on what I like visually. Thanks for the quick replies. I would for reference points like to hear people's preferences. John says the long/short thing is cyclic. Short is "all the rage" for a while, then long is the king for a while. Wondering where people are coming from in their preferences.

  10. So I'll just open up this can of worms. I've never shot open, but I'm planning on having a local builder build me an Open gun - John Larson, JPL Precision. I've shot a shorty and a full size that he has, both amazing. I'd like to hear peoples preferences and reasoning behind the following questions:

    - Long or short

    - Skinny barrel or bull barrel

    - Weight heavy or lighter, muzzle heavy or not

    - lightened slide or not

    - long or short trigger

Caliber is gonna be 9mm Major - that's what he builds, and he knows how to make them run. I could probably save a substantial amount of money buying a used gun, but I've always wanted something from John. His work is great, and he's a great guy. I come from collecting custom knives, so a custom gun that's built up from parts as opposed to a customized gun is very appealing to me.

    Thanks in advance!

  11. If you have seen some of the Larry Davidson/Miltac grips, I LOVE those. They're machined from G10 which is nice and grippy with machined textures - got those on all my single stacks, except one with the Simonich Gunner Grips.

But as for my Limited, I'd like a REALLY THIN (looks like you've hit that) aluminum grip that I can apply some grip/skateboard tape to. Black would be nice as I don't intent on grip taping the whole thing, so I think it'd look really sweet. Can't wait to find out the status of this project - the sooner the better, but put me down for one for the Limited when they're ready regardless of anodize color.

  12. I bought it, I guess before they had the one for 9mm. It works GREAT w/ 45acp, but the 40S&W one also catches the 38/357. And then everything smaller is dropped into my bucket. If you only sort 45,40,9 it would be perfect. I'm sorting a whole assortment of things, so it's a little less than ideal. And when we sweep the floor cases get stuck in each other, and that's a pain. It's definitely worth the few bucks it costs though.

  13. Lot of good mine did me - first time I took it to our weekly plate league I won the whole damn thing - and I've only won once before in like 5 years! So now I have to shoot handicapped against everyone else for winning! ;)

I'm loading long. I noticed with factory 40S&W it wasn't feeding as well - in fact, I was having a friend shoot it, and it double fed two rounds, popping one right out and then feeding one into the chamber - never seen something so odd in my life, but I caught the full loaded never fired round and spent casing that flew out!

Sounds like yours is working out well for you! Hopefully I'll get to a USPSA match soon too!

  14. Tech tip on getting the hammer roll pin out on a match:

    1. Use the right size pin punch - just slightly smaller than the pin

    2. Use a bench block to support the frame on and drive the pin out

    3. Use a steel hammer and don't be wimpy - if you are wimpy the pin won't move - my little brass hammer didn't do crap, neither did my nice little plastic/rubber mallot. Went with a regular carpentry hammer for driving nails - a few firm hits did the trick.

    4. Don't hit the pin all the way out, just enough to clear the hammer (see Henning's video on his taking out pins)

    5. Use the pin punch as a slave pin for aligning the hammer then you go to put it back together

  15. In the 9mm got a ambi safety from Henning, put on the fiber optic front sight I bought from H a while ago, 13# hammer spring, EGW X-long oversize firing pin and 11# recoil spring. Flipped the mag release around (lefty) and had to slightly tune the mags as they wouldn't quite fully catch the release. 100 rounds - 50 mag tech and 50rds American Eagle. Shot great!

    :D
