  1. I'm always sorry to hear when true talent is taken from us... his work was top notch.

Are you related to him Mitch?

That was the running joke between us. In 2001 I attended my first big knife show - OKCA in his town of Eugene, OR. Bob and Jean's son is a few years younger than me, so people just saw my nametag and thought I was Bob and Jean's son! I had an hour long conversation with one knifemaker who at the end of our conversation said "tell your dad I said hi". It was pretty funny! So for the knifeshows, it's like Bob and Jean had adopted me.

I guess while I'm reminiscing, I'll share a picture of one my favorite pieces (only wish I had the opportunity to own one). Truly a unique style and grind - the Chinese Fighter with sabre tip grind. Bob being multifaceted also took this great photo!

  2. Here's the pics. The Bo-mar style definitely gives a more defined sight picture - especially contrasted with the fiber optic front sight. The Novak style having less to hang up on will probably be better for plates and IDPA ESP where you gotta shoot to slide lock, and manually (or at least that's how I do it) rack the slide.

    FUN FUN FUN!

  3. Congrats on finally getting them - they do seem to be a helluva value.

Could you post up a pic of the new sight? I haven't seen it yet...

    Thanks,

    Dave

I'll try to shoot some comparison pictures tonight.

  4. Yeah, that's the thing, before you got the target sights included, and now they've changed config. Kinda like how the Limited used to have aluminum grips and now it's got wood. When I ordered my Match they were coming with the Supersight, but now I gotta pay an extra $70, and probable have a little mill work done to bury them just right. Oh well, minor complaint.

    Review of mags/mag tubes since I've got 9mm, 40S&W, 10mm

They're all large frame mag tubes, all seem dimensioninally the same, except the 9mm has closer feedlips (obviously to position the top round in the right place relative to the mag). The 9mm mag tube has some flair on the inside of the tube, which probably decreases capacity somewhat, but also allows the rounds to ride on less surface area. The 40S&W and 10mm tubes seem IDENTICAL just marked differently.

In a test, I can fill a 10mm mag with 15 rounds of 10mm or 15 rounds of 40S&W - no surprise. I can fill my H-140 mag with 20 rounds of the 40-long, factory 40, and 10mm - no surprise. I can fill a 40S&W mag with 15 rounds of factory 40S&W but only 11 rounds of 10mm before I feel something binding. Weird thing is I can load up 2 round of 10mm and put 12 rounds 40 on top of it, for a total 14 in the tube (I thought maybe the COL was making it bind near the bottom of the tube). Maybe it's the follower? I'll have to take it apart tonight and measure the followers. I guess I'll have to measure the case diameters of my 10mm and 40S&W although I thought they were the same.

  5. Back in June I ordered two Elite Match pistols from the shop I help out at. I waited and waited. I thought my shop hadn't placed the order. I checked w/ our distributor - they had our order but were majorly backordered. I called EAA, they had lots of orders but were also backordered from the factory in Italy. My impatience brought me here, and eventually to buy the Limited from Rich at Canyon Creek. Finally EAA got some in, my distributor got some of those, and the shop got my order filled!

I'm pleased to say that the Elite Match is a heck of a deal. While I really love the Limited, the dollar value that the Match is clearly in a different class. The pistol shot well. Luckily for me, I ordered the fiber optic from Henning months ago, so those will go in this week now that I've broken it in with a few round. I'll probably lighten the recoil spring (first) and hammer spring (later) as well. I think I'm gonna leave the 10mm as is. My only disappointment is that it now comes with adjustable Novak clones as opposed to adjustable Bomar style target sights. All my buddies Match's and my Limited have the target sights, oh well, I guess I'll just have to focus that much harder on the right sight and my shooting fundamentals!

  6. You've probably done this, but one thing that hung me up once was I hadn't case gauged all my rounds. In one of my XD-9's I was having extraction problems (round left in the chamber) with my reloads but not factory ammo. My reloads haven't had problems in any of my other 9mms. After I case gauged all my ammo, I found some that didn't drop into the gauge. Once I fed the XD-9 only ammo that passed, the extraction problems went away. My other guns much have looser chambers.

  7. 170PF will destroy those lousy plates in no time anyway... I know a guy who used to fix crap like that. ;):goof:

Mitch, have you run any rainiers in your limited yet? I have not gotten great accuracy out of plated bullets in polygonal rifled barrels like your limited has. Not sure how it will do at lower pf's, but right at 168-170 the groups started to open up in mine pretty dramatically.

I am going all jacketed in the future.

Criag, Rainiers are all I've been loading so far. It's been good. 180gr. Rainier loaded out real long 1.20", WSP or Fed Small, 4.6gr Titegroup.

  8. What are you guys loading for a 40S&W MINOR load? I'd like to load 180gr. Rainiers at 1.80" with Titegroup or WST. Right now I'm loading w/ 4.6gr of TG (per recommendation here). I'm thinking of loading down to 4.2gr. I'd appreciate your recipes.

    Thanks,

    Mitch

  9. Your confusion on spring weights may be like mine when I first got into this. In engineering and physics classes we learned about "spring constants" which express a force per unit length. So what's a "10lbs spring"? Is it 10lbs/inch? No, the gun industry measures springs based on total force (lbs of force) at full compression. So a 10lb spring means 10lbs of force at full compression. I would imagine a similar thing with the Kgf measurement.

  10. I've used XD-40 mags in my XD-9 --- the key is to adjust the feedlips "just right". If you can find a measurement across the opening at the top of a P16-40 magazine then squeeze the P14-45 feed lips to that same dimension, you might have a chance of it working well. Otherwise the rounds will sit too high in mag or maybe even jump out. Good luck!

  11. Sorry for the diversion. My basic thought is that converting one gun isn't likely to be worth it. Sell the "extra" gun and get "something" whether that's a P16 or something else, is another thread. If you convert it, it'll cost you a bunch of money but I guess you'll have a full top end as back-up parts for the other P14-45.

  12. Shot the Todd Jarrett Limited last night - it was a really nice gun. On part w/ STI/SV - maybe...only got to run 50rounds through it, as it belong to a rep. If you like it go for it. I've gone EAA Witness Limited and have been very happy - I'll use the cost diff between it and and STI/SV to get more training in.
