  1. I have a DOH that I have been using and absolutely LOVE it.

I really liked how I had my mags for Limited. One dead center on my belt, and the rest closely behind, but this placement would be illegal in production, so I have a dilemma there...

  2. I had a conversation with Pharaoh Bender a few days ago about shooting Limited with the exact same set up for production (other than gun) and it got me thinking...

The conversation started with us talking about the malfunctions I was having. I took off my magwell, and narrowed down the jams to one magazine. I asked him about shooting Limited without the magwell and did some searching about not using one....

Is a magwell really worth it for Limited? When switching from Limited to Production, I seem to have a hard time with reloads. My thinking is, if I don't use a magwell in Limited, then my reloads would be the same for each division assuming no basepads (next question).

Do you use basepads on your mags for limited? I'm not really sure, now that I think about it, if the extra 5 rounds in a mag make much of a difference since we reload on the move most of the time.

Do you use the same mag pouches in the same position when going back and forth between divisions? Like Bender said, do 1,000,000 reloads one way and 1000 another, and which one will be more automatic?

His thoughts really got me thinking about all of the equipment I use in Limited compared to Production.

EDIT: G35 for Limited and G34 for Production

  3. Not really sure what made me think about it, but I started wondering how many people on the forum were Eagle Scouts. Did a search and what do you know....

I got my Eagle in 2006. My Mom really pushed me to finish, because her father Thomas Mackey was very active in scouting. He was the Counil President for 20 something years, and never stopped being involved. He was still a Scoutmaster for his troop when he passed away in 1993. I am so thankful for my Mom who pushed me to stay in scouts and stay involved. I learned so much through scouting, and hope to get my son involved when the time comes.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the depths....

By the way, I attended the National Jamboree in 2001 and Philmont in 2004. These two trips are one's that I will never forget. I really enjoyed my time in scouting, and when I graduate, I hope I can still be involved

  4. A bench is what we fix lawnmower engines on. :) What you want, especially in a small space is a press mount.

Tables and portable work benches don't provide the resistance needed especially during sizing and primer seating.

For instance I use 8- 8x8x16 cement blocks and "sandwiched" them together with 5/16" all-thread and 3/4" plywood.

Takes up a 4' wide area. The base which I set/stand on is literally connected to the center shelf and the work surface. No

question the easiest, most solid solution I have come up with. Cost something like $70.00

My beam scale sets close to the press. I does not move. FWIW.

If I understand correctly, you took cement blocks and stacked them, then came back and put the plywood around them, and put a peice of plywood on top which you mount the press to?

  5. there is a thread in the gallery called "reloading benches." that should give you a ton of ideas about benches, and using space wisely!

and from someone who reloads in an apartment...it is no problem! as far as lead exposure, keep the area clean, wash your hands and separate cases outside.

I have seen this thread before, but never looked through the whole thing. Last night I did, and found a few ideas. Thanks

  6. A friend has a bench from Lowe's and added a piece of 1" plywood to the top and it is very nice.

I use a Dillon tumbler and the gasket keeps the dust in. If I were you I would put it on a timer and let it tumble for a couple of hours while I was at work. I would go outside and use the separator because that does generate some dust.

I'll probably go to Lowes and Home depot tomorrow to see what they have. Is your friends bench on carpet? If it is, did they have to put anything under the bench, like plywood, to help keep it steady?

  7. Ok, so loading in my room shouldn't be a problem as long as I run the tumbler outside. No problem there.

Do you think that one of the portable workbenches from Lowes or Home Depot would be sturdy enough on carpet? I could always put some plywood or some type of hard rubber on the floor to help with support.

Another question I had was about storing components. Is it ok to store powder and primers together? I would most likely keep the components on some type of shelf underneath my workbench, or in my closet.

I'm really leaning towards the 550, because I might want to start loading for 9mm in the future.

  8. I've been doing some research on reloading, and have decided that I want to start. I had some questions though about what press (due to space, or lack of) etc...

1.) I live in an apartment with three room mates, so I would want to keep the reloader in my bedroom if possible. I had a few concerns about this. Would it be safe to reload no more than 4 feet from my bed? I keep everything pretty clean, but I was worried about spilled powder, dust containing lead, etc..

2.) Tumbler: With three roomates, I am worried about the tumbler. How loud is it? I read on an old thread where Sig Lady said she covered her tumbler with towels and blankets to try to keep the noise down. Would this make it quite enough to run in my room without disturbing anyone? I am also worried about the dust from the tumbler, how much dust does it really give off? (again, only a few feet from my bed) I could run it on my porch, but I am worried about it getting stolen (Waco has a pretty high poverty rate, if you leave something outside overnight, it is gone in the morning unless chained up).

3.)Space: I have an area in my room about 3' X 4' that would be perfect for the loader, but is this enough space to fit the loader and give me enough room to work around it? I was thinking about putting the loader on some type of portable work bench so I can move it if I need to.

4.) Which Press? With the amount of space that I have, does that give me enough room to start off with the 550, or would I need to go with the SDB? I shoot less than 1000 rounds per month. Probably more like 500-800 rounds (including matches) depending on how much time I have. One thing that worried me about the SDB, was the dies. I will be loading .40 for a Glock 35. With only being able to use Dillon dies, I am worried that the brass won't always get resized properly.

I probably won't get the press until next month, so I'm not in any big hurry. Just trying to figure out what would be best for me.

    Thanks

    Ross

    EDIT: spelling

  9. -What was the problem with your gun? Malfs are a killer...no? PM coming your way on that topic...

-Standing reloads are almost always a looser, especially in Limited. Was there any way to avoid them at the April Match?

-You seem to be miscalling some of your shots...and penalties are another hf killer. It looks like you are shooting steel quite well, so it makes me wonder if you might be yanking the trigger off the target for your second shots on paper.

    -Nice reload on the classifier!

-Be ready to fire the instant your sights are where you want them on your draw. You seem to pause for a moment on every draw

-Your splits are okay, but your transitions seem a little slow in comparison (difficult to ascertain the target distance/difficulty in some stages though)

Shooting and classes are a killer mix brother! I'm right there with ya ;)

I just went back and really looked over my videos again. I never noticed that little hesitation after my draw...I'll work on it.

The stage with the standing reload was set up weird with the counts...I could have reloaded on the move, but I would have had to reload twice, or ran the gun to slide lock. So would that have really saved me time??

  10. Haha, man I thought I had it runnin good, but I guess not...still not exactly sure what is goin on.

I really think it is my mags, but I bought 4 new mags, put new +10% springs in, and still have problems...

I have also noticed that my followers come up very slowly when feeding the next round, I really think this has to do with the springs...

  11. Here's a few more match videos. The first is from a local match in April.

The second is from the Texas Open. I shot through on Saturday, because I had a final exam that morning. The shoot through really screwed up my game. I didn't have enough time to really program the stages, and had a few mental mistakes. I felt rushed too. (Sorry for the bad video, my sister was filming.)

  12. Shooting through can definitely be a challenge. ;) You need to still focus, and prep each stage the same way you do any other - but it gets easier to do as you gain experience at stage prep and stuff...

After assisting w/ all the setup, man, I think you earned that shoot through privilege... ;)

Thanks Dave, I like to help out where I can, and I really enjoy setting stages up. (Plus I get to know where all the traps are!)

I did all the same stage prep I normally do, I just didn't have enough time to really program the stage. I missed a few reloads (either reloaded too early, or ran to slide lock). I still had a great time, I just didn't shoot to my full potential.
