  1. First, Dave, Peter, Cactus - It's my thread, drift away.

I'm in the market for new glass. Unfortunately, I'm not rich and I can't keep buying until I get what I want so I have to rely on the opinions of others. Informed, descriptive opinions of people who actively shoot 3 Gun are invited and appreciated.

BTW, I called Nightforce as part of this quest and the 1-4 is not available with the NP-R1 or NP-R2 reticle. The 1-4 is available with the FC-2, NP-1 and Close Range Mil Dot. The 2.5 to 10 adds the NP-R2. In order to get the NP-R1 you must go to the 3.5-15.

Cactus - any idea on when the 1-4 IOR will be available?

Thanks, please keep the posts coming.

    Huh... That is interesting... :surprise:

They list it on their website http://www.nightforceoptics.com/?catid=1&viewitem=150 (it shows up if you go down to the second pane where they compare specs of the 1-4 with the 2.5-10 scroll down to show the reticles that are available on each.)

Of course, to me it seems likely based on your conversations with them that it is a misprint...

Goes to show you you can't believe every thing you read.

  2. Having shot David's scope on his AR-10 on flash targets out to 200+ yards I will vouch that it is a nice piece of glass...

Speaking as a Meopta user I would consider this scope if I weren't so attached to the daylight illuminated reticle.

In reference to holdover-capable reticles NightForce claims that they are available on this scope most notably the NPR2 (MOA marks) and a Mill-dot reticle.

    Sorry for thread creep...

  3. Most of my shooters don't seem to enjoy shooting stand and shoot type standard exercises. They whine enough about having to shoot one per match ;) While there are a few field course type classifiers (Lefty's Revenge, After Work Blues, and Easy Street come to mind) It is difficult to produce a match with that many classifiers in it without losing the interest of most of my shooters.

Having said that if there are a large number of new people or enough people wanting to try to move up or get cards in other divisions, I'll usually try to run one.

  4. Green. Mostly because it seems brighter when I compare them.

In addition since I primarily shoot open I found that when switching back from open to limited having a red dot at the end of my gun triggered the "dot on A-Zone, trigger shot" response and I forgot all about the whole "use the rear sight" business.

  5. That 6" is great. I like the fluting on the bull barrel (look like ball end cuts?). I presume the idea was not only to lose total weight, but also to lower the reciprocating mass?

    Peter

  6. I like MG 124 JHP with Silhouette. I like Silhouette because it "feels good" meters well and leaves plenty of space in the case (doesn't make a mess all over the press). This is what I went to when my keg of SP2 was gone.

If you don't mind cleaning a little powder off the press, 3n38 is also nice (what my gunsmith JL Hardy was recommending at the time my gun was built).

  7. One answer to the port height problem is to put in 2 ports one low one high. It IS more trouble and it isn't a perfect solution for everyone but it does seem to work better. Or use a slot? I am afraid that many designers myself included can become guilty of what someone on here called, "taking the shooting boxes off the ground and putting them in the wall" when USPSA started emphasising freestyle more.

  8. I'm not too worried about recoil. The reason is simple enough in that I primarily shoot Open. If the muzzle rise/recoil is that much more harsh than a .223 w/ a tactical brake, then there's always bumping up the comp to the JP Recoil Eliminator.

My only concern is consistently and with a good margin for "error" to make major in it. This is part of the reason I was talking with the guys from Sabre Defence so much at the A6-3G. I had been doing some numbers crunching/comparison with the 6.8 vs. 6.5. There just seems to be a HUGE gain in being able to go with a 6.5, if only as a cooler long range option (ITRC type matches where the carbine guy has some long shots).

The upside is that one random caliber shouldn't really de-rail the market as a whole on calibers for 3-Gun (like 9mm in Limited I feel would). There are enough matches (probably a majority) where the advantage of major scoring on the rifle, is not worth that much more as the ranges (less than 250 yards) at most matches don't really necessitate a big advantage to scoring major since A-hits and steel hits are easily completed rapidly with the smaller caliber.

ETA: So now, comes some serious testing. Can I make major in 6.5 Grendel in a 16" barrel. If you can make it at 20, if there's enough margin of velocity drop (say about 150 fps) then there's room.

There are several cartridges that will badly beat the Grendels ballistics now. 6mmAR, 6mm Turbo, 6mmBanshee, 6.5Banshee, 6mmHagar, 5.56x42DMR.

the .243 95gr Sierra MK with a BC of .480-.510 makes it easy to smoke the Grendel. 2965fps from a 22" Banshee. and a .224 75gr Amax at 3150fps from the 5.56x42.

Doesn't look like any of those go major?

  9. That Nordic gizmo looks like the stuff! Dammit...and I was saving up for a 9mm Single Stack. Oh well...it's only money.

CactusTactical...if you are starting a waiting list put me on it please.

We will start a thread on our forum when the stocks are heading our way. Will also send out a group email to those who have expressed interest.

  10. I would go with a fairly lightweight 18" barrel as it is a nice compromise between the easy handling characteristics of the 16 and the extra velocity of the 20". I would favor a 1-8 or 1-9 twist barrel with either a mid-length or rifle length gas system.

If you intend to use it for 3 gun I second (maybe third or fourth by now :-) ) the choice of the Meopta Kdot for your optic.

By all means get more than one upper as finances allow the AR is truly the swiss army rifle.

  11. I used to run this in my 9x25 it was the flattest thing I have ever used. It created so much gas for the comp that the dot dipped down slightly. That along with a mind numbing concussion. You might be able to get enough of it to go major in a 38 sup, provided it is a 5" gun.

My 9x25 load was like 15.5-16ish gr with a 124 gr bullet to go old major I believe I used to shoot for 180 pf. Of course the 9x25 had much more case volume. So work up slowly is good advice.

Good luck and let us know how it works.

  12. Ok. How about a 6.5 Grendel?

You can get loaded ammunition from Alexander arms with a 120 gr Nosler ballistic tip that looks to run 2500-2600 fps from a 20 in barrel (I can't find consistent numbers on the web but that was the range I saw).

I believe that Alexander arms also sells a load with a 130 gr Swift Scirocco (Although I don't see it on their web site).

There are a large number of quality 6.5 bullets available if you want to hand load this.

With good shot placement 6.5 bullets kill deer nicely.

  13. At a large match as I waited on the squad in front of mine to finish shooting. I saw a revolver shooter drop a partial moon clip of .45s as he made his reload... Federal primers + gravel on the floor of the berm + the weight of partial moon clip of .45s = detonation... Not sure what you could do about that either unless you wanted to do IDPA style reloads.

No matter how careful we are sometimes shit just happens.

Okay, I don't know the answer to this, but I wonder if that's an automatic "stop" and reshoot for the competitor? A mild explosion at your feet ought to qualify as outside interference even if it's your own ammo. Not only that, but from a safety aspect it'd be nice to make sure he didn't pick up any shrapnel.

If I recall correctly the RO stopped him thinking maybe an AD had occurred. When he figured out what had happened the guy got a re-shoot.

Was this at South River a couple of years ago?

    Yep.

  16. Finding the dot is mostly a muscle memory thing. The only thing I know that will make that happen is Dry Fire.

The way I learned was during the draw bring the gun up high enough so that I could see through the scope while the gun was close to my face. Then push it out . I found that if I tried to acquire the dot at arms length I did the C-More wave which requires the *!*!*!*Open gun !@!#!@#! practice that was recommended above :surprise: . One other tip I can offer is that if you lose the dot (like on a transfer to weak hand ) you can frequently find it again by putting the top of the C-More adjustment knob in the bottom of the lens. That usually gets the scope aligned enough to see the dot.

I usually seem to put a little bend in my arms when I shoot open, it seems to damp out some of the vibration.

Beware switching back to Limited. For the first several draws I usually find myself looking about 3" over the sights at where my C-More would be.

As said before, welcome to the Dark Side.

  17. I use and like the Meopta Kdot.

Having said that the little Weaver is probably the best scope for the money (it is what I have on my backup).

I had the bushnell for a while and the one I had was not a true 1 power scope. In addition I found that the cross hairs were too thick for my use on the little self-resetting mini poppers that the local guys like to use.

I had the IOR 1.1-4. It had a nice reticle (didn't like the horseshoe above the aiming point though), and was bright as hell. It was built like a tank and the adjustments were rock solid. On the down side it was built like a tank and so was heavy. In addition the one I had suffered from insufficient eye relief to let me mount it far enough forward to take advantage of the 1.1X

As to other scopes you might think about.

Kahles Helia C 1.1-4 is a very nice piece of glass. CDNN has them on sale right now. It weighs about 14.5 oz.

The NightForce 1-4 is also very nice (though about $1200 street price). It weighs about 17oz.

  18. If you look in the forums over at ar15.com there has been a lot of talk about this. I believe that some of the folks over there have taken AK 74 barrels and with some machine work fitted a headspace extension, and a custom gas block to create a 5.45 AR. Not sure what they are using for a bolt probably a 5.56 with the face opened up or maybe a 6.8 SPC bolt?

Alexander Arms used to make a barrel in a caliber they called .21 Genghis that would use 5.45 ammo. I don't believe that they catalog it anymore but if you could find one that might be an option.
