If you don't want to "dump 1k into" it, then an RMR wouldn't be the wisest choice!  I don't know much about the Axiom stock, but I'd investigate where it places the cheek relative to dot hieght before investing in it.  The adjustability of the Axiom would be good for a smaller/growing shooter though.

If you want to keep the price down and still build a quality gun, I'd recommend a C-More Slideride (available all the time used here at BEnos) on an Allchin mount, which would allow you to keep the OEM stock or replace with something like a Hogue Overmold stock.  The Overmold will help keep the price down, as well as the fit size if she's a smaller person, and I'd imagine that spacers can be added to the butt if needed to lengthen it.  A TacSol barrel is accurate and relatively inexpensive, but more importantly a very pleasant weight, which again helps for a smaller shooter.  Get the KIDD trigger upgrade that costs something like $100 and a PWS mag release to round it out for a great Steel Challenge blaster on a budget.

How old is your daughter, and how tall is she?

The RMR is an excellent dot, but it is designed to be a "battle sight," so the glass is in a hardened case that doubles its price, and you'll never need it on a gun that will spend the majority of its life either in a padded carrying case or being handled carefully while not in the case.  Put an RMR on your hunting gun, and a C-More on your competition gun.  The Slideride was (and maybe still is) the most popular dot in the USPSA because it is relatively inexpensive and tough as nails as long as you don't misuse it.  The good news for you is that a lot of shooters are phasing them out and selling off their old used ones, which are still perfectly good.

Here's my shopping list, ordered in priority, for somebody looking to build a quality Steel 10/22 on a budget.  Shop around and visit the home sights of the products below, and you will find that most of the products come in a variety of adorable colors, like piiiiiiiink, red, and blue.  The 1st three are required.

1. Kidd trigger: https://www.coolguyguns.com/KIDD-Trigger-Job-Kit-with-Hammer-Sear-Disconnect-and-Trigger-blade_p_95.html

2. Primary Weapons Systems T3 Magazine Release:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/PWS-T3-10-22-Mag-Release-/152593925326?hash=item23874e84ce:g:lakAAOSwFJBZScZF

3. Magazines (5 minimum, 7 is best):  http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazines/ruger-10-22-magazine-22lr-prod72240.aspx

Do the above only, and you'll have a perfectly good iron-sighted rifle that will treat her well for the rest of her life.  While this wouldn't be my first choice, you're on a budget sooooooo.... for optics instead of irons, add:

4.  Allchin scope mount:  https://www.allchingunparts.com/collections/c-more-scope-mounts/products/ruger-10-22-c-more-scope-mount

5.  C-More Slideride:  http://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/electronic-sights/red-dot-sights/slide-ride-red-dot-sight-prod58816.aspx

Again, you could stop at the above and be happy.  But, this is your baby girl, soooooo.... to personalize the stock:

6. Magpul X-22 Hunter (with whatever additional spacers and cheek risers are required) and remember that it's available in piiiiiiiiinkhttp://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/stock-parts/rifle-stocks/ruger-10-22-hunter-x-22-stock-adjustable-prod79484.aspx

And finally, to be a real Kool Kid, she'll need a pretty and lightweight barrel with a brake so the timer will reliably pick up her shots:

7.  Threaded KIDD Ultra Lightweight Barrel (turns out they are less expensive than TacSol!!!):  https://www.coolguyguns.com/KIDD-22LR-Ultra-Lightweight-Fluted-Rifle-Bull-Barrel_p_138.html

8.  Make sure you get their extractor upgrade:  https://www.coolguyguns.com/KIDD-Extractor_p_14.html

9.  And an Allchin comp:  https://www.allchingunparts.com/collections/compensators/products/22-rim-fire-rifle-compensator

That should do you for under a grand with no need to go to a gunsmith, except for maybe the barrel install depending on how confident you are in the shop.

Tan then!  The biggest problem with smaller shooters isn't the length of the stock but the trigger reach, which is to say the distance from the back of the grip to the trigger. If it's being shared between two shooters, though, an easilly adjustable stock would be good but the trigger reach will have to be a compromise.  What is the size of your son?  If they're close (long shot) then it would make life easier.  I'm going to PM another BEnos member who uses a stock setup that might work well for you.  One thing about his stock that I noticed when I shot it is that the grip sits pretty close to the trigger so it's a good fit for small hands.  I think he said that it can be adjusted out if need be.

I was thinking rmr for faster target acquisition and there are decent red dots for not. Lot of money.  I'm not sure what a c-more slideride is?

This is a C-More on a 10-22

I think you are headed in the right direction... Congratulations on getting your daughter involved at an early age.!!

You have received some good information here. However, I would urge caution on setting up any rifle that would be too heavy for her to handle time after time on repeated courses of fire. I think initially I would have her mount, swing, fire (if possible..) a gun of a certain weight to get an idea what she can comfortably handle repeatedly. You will need to watch the barrel weight as well as the overall weight. Balance will be a problem for a small framed shooter. If you need to establish a "trade off" (and you will...), then I would err on the side of less weight. Your son can easily adapt to a gun of lesser weight... Also, consider a stock/chassis that is completely adjustable so it can be quickly and easily adjusted for either shooter.

Choice of optic will be yours. There are a lot of small optics available that are quite good. All can be mounted on a small section of rail on the receiver. Note too that the stock/chassis should be adjustable so the shooter can line up their eye with the center of the optic... You will need a relatively high comb....IMHO.  Some folks hold to the idea that you can shoot a rimfire without a good "stock weld". I would respectfully say that it is not a good idea. It would increase the degree of difficulty unnecessarily for a young, small framed shooter.

Good Luck.!!

I looked at that chassis.... It looks like it would be pretty good. I think your choice of barrel and optic (and possibly trigger, extractor upgrades..??) will be the only challenge. Lightweight barrel definitely, so fluted, short, or carbon...OR a combination of those. I would definitely look at triggers and extractors too...

I think you have it mostly figured out... :)

I personally don't care for the amount of flex in the Axiom stock. I've tried several stocks and found the PMACA multi-chassis with carbon handguard works best for me. Here's my Steel Challenge rig:

It's by far the fastest setup I have used. You don't have to use everything I did to get it to perform well, although this is exactly the build I'd recommend for anybody wanting a good Steel Challenge RFRO rig.
