benos
Shooting long shots with an iron-sighted pistol, instead of "holding over" with your normal sight picture, it helps to float the front sight up out of the rear notch a bit until you find the sweet spot. be
gm iprod
Brian is bang on with the sight arrangement for sensible ranges. Sometimes I will shoot 100y with the Model 41, I just linethe bottom of the front sight up with the top of the rear sight and hold on the target. For drop tables with 9mm I worked out the following 9mm JHP Match Bullet Weight 145 BC 0.167 Muzzle Velocity 900 Zero Range 50Y Range Height Vel Energy PF 0 -1.5 900 251 130.50 10 -0.31 890 246 129.05 20 0.45 882 241 127.89 30 0.76 873 237 126.59 40 0.61 865 232 125.43 50 0 856 228 124.12 60 -1.09 848 224 122.96 70 -2.65 841 219 121.95 80 -4.71 833 215 120.79 90 -7.28 826 212 119.77 100 -10.35 818 208 118.61 9mm JHP Match Bullet Weight 125 BC 0.137 Muzzle Velocity 1050 fps Zero Range 50Y Range Height Vel Energy PF 0 -1.5 1050 306 131.25 10 -0.53 1032 295 129.00 20 0.12 1015 286 126.88 30 0.43 999 277 124.88 40 0.4 984 269 123.00 50 0 971 261 121.38 60 -0.77 958 254 119.75 70 -1.91 945 248 118.13 80 -3.44 933 241 116.63 90 -5.38 921 235 115.13 100 -7.72 910 230 113.75 The reason the sight height is so high is that I have a set of Aristocrat rear sights and a adjustable front sight, actual cartridge was 38Super, bullets were 9mm in diameter. Hope it helps.
Matt Griffin
See also: Elmer Keith was the king of long range pistol shooting, at least he did enough of it to have some stories. He also used the front sight above the rear method, I imagine with a serrated front you could get a backwoods-Vernier thing going. I wish I had these ranges to play with, but Knob Creek just scares me when the usual crowd is shooting. H.
