Want a new camera

Yes, another camera thread!

Looking for a new rangebag camera.

What I want:

Runs on AA (or AAA) batteries

Good video with decent sound in a common format

A LCD that's BIG and bright enough to see in bright sunlight.

SD memory, able to take 8 gig cards

Stuff that would be nice:

Image stabilization

Weather resistance

What I don't need:

High megapixels. 5 would probably be fine

Mega zoom---all it does is make my wobbles more visible

Canon Powershot A590?

At $120 weather resistance is buying two. I wouldn't call the LCD big or particularly bright but it does the rest just fine. I have one and use it for matches and such and the video is quite good.

I like Canon's---my current camera is a Canon A430. Video is usable, the sound isn't great,

and the LCD pretty much washes out in bright light. I'm getting tired of doing video of

stages through the viewfinder! I'll add the A590 to my list of "cameras to look at".

The July 2009 issue of Consumer Reports has a huge report on cameras. I read a while back that you can count on Canon to get it right the first time, especially with point and shoots. In the magazine's point and shoot compact catagory, Canon is number one, two and three. The A590IS made number three and is a steal for $110 dollars. I have the older A540 and I'm really happy with it's performance.

Wow. Looks like Canon wins.

Dug out Consumers Report, did a little on-line review surfing. The

A590 looks sweet, but the A1000 IS for a few bucks more just

might get my vote. The LCD brightness will probably decide which

one.

Time to go spend some money! I'll keep my old A430 for a work/truck

camera. It's a little beat up but everything still works fine.

Yep, Canon's are great. Love my A1000is. Great image quality, easy to use, runs on AA batteries, video is OK. The A590 is a great camera for the money and I wouldnt hesitate to buy one.

Canon A1000IS---everyone locally out of stock.

Got one coming from Staples, should be here Monday.

Got them to price-match Wally Worlds "on sale " price of $129

Minus a $10 rewards card.

Minus a $50 rebate from a monitor I bought on black Friday

Net cost on new A1000IS, $69. I'll give it a good field test at Area 1.
