Stuck in C
I used to shoot factory 9mm when it was about $90/1000, but I am restarting reloading 9mm since it has gone to double that. I previously used 124 gr FMJ's, 4.2 gr Titegroup at an OAL of 1.135. However, I now have several cases of MG 124gr JHP's and the bullet profile is much different than the FMJ's. I 'm wondering what OAL I should start with for the JHP's. I did a search on this forum and found that some said I should load shorter for the JHP's, some longer, and some the same! This is for a G34 and a G19. Any thoughts out there?
DougCarden
Accuracy note.....load them as long as the magazine will feed. ....ok...load about 10 of them and then see if they will run the gun, then load more if they will...... The longer you load the 9x19 the better it shoots, but it is dependant on the length of the magazine. I have really good luck with 115hps loaded to 1.120, but it is is 1911s..... Good luck, DougC
WestWorld
I determine OAL on a new bullet by pulling the barrel out of the gun. Then seat and crimp your MG 124 JHP at, oh lets say 1.180 OAL and drop it into the chamber. Does it spin freely without much resistance? If it doesn't, then it's too long and touching the rifling. Push it in lightly with your finger... did it get stuck and require some force to pull it out? Then it's too long because the bullet was grabbed by the bore rifling. Keep dropping the OAL until the cartridge drops in with a "clink" and the bullet isn't sticking in the bore/rifling. As you know rimless ammo seats on the case mouth and not the bullet face. 00bullitt
I seat the 124 MG JHP to 1.125" and shoot it out of a G34. Its more accurate than I can shoot it at 25 yards. I load the CMJ's to 1.140" and use two tenths grains more powder.
BillGarlandJr
I load the MG 124jhp to 1.130" oal for my Glock 17. They feed slick, and are very accurate. I didn't just luck into a successful formula for my pistol though. I messed around with different powders and oal before I found a load that I was happy with. Take some of the info given here, use it as a starting point, and "mess" around with loads till you find one you like.
Darrell
My load for my G17 is 124 M.G 4.1 Tightgroup, 1.120 OAL. This load put nine shots in .603 inches from my Ransom Rest the other day. I tested all my guns with the bullets I load for overall length to rifling last month. Here are my results.
