Dillon 1050 Setup

I just started using the super 1050 for my 9mm major ammo. I had trouble the first time using it with primer feed problems but found out later it was a very minor problem which was cause by powder spill. As a new 1050 user, it took me a while to figure out how this machine works. After so many weeks understanding how this machine works and tweaking this machine, it sure is the best out there. The only thing I did was to make sure it is clean from spilled powder. Using one shot case lube made a big difference and is a believer of the product. Thanks to all who suggested this product.

My next problem was having a ring at the bottom of the case using a 38 super undersize decapping and sizer die from EGW. It got to a point that it shave's a good amount of brass at the bottom of the case causing a ring which is also rough resulting to poor magazine feed. For days, I was using a single stage press using a Dillon 9mm sizer die running each case before putting them in the casefeeder and it solve the problem but not the effort and time. Finally got tired of doing it and found a remedy for the problem.

*** TIP *** I ended having to install the Dillon 9mm sizer/decapping die on my 1050's 1st stage and remove the expander die on the 2nd stage and replaced it with the EGW 38 super undersize sizer die - can use a 9mm undersize die too instead of the 38 super **** make sure you take out the decapping pin before installing your undersize die in the 2nd stage ***. To make sure all my loads are useable, I installed a LEE factory crimp die on my last stage. I was very pleased with the results of my loads which where very consistent when is comes to gauging my ammos. Now, I got no ring problems at the bottom of the case and have more time doing other chores instead of spending time in my single press running each case through a sizer/decapping die. This setup may be too extreme to others but in the end, it will save me money not throwing away loaded ammo that does not fit the gauge or spending time using a bullet puller separating the bullet, powder and brass.

38 Super is straight-walled and intentionally narrower at the base (.384") than the tapered 9x19 case (.391"), thus the ring. Where'd you get the idea to use a Super resizer on 9?

I use one 9x19 sizing die in my 1050 for major-9 loading and it works fine through multiple loadings.

I was shooting 38 super before switching to 9 major. I didn't know there was a difference on the bottom of the 38 super vs 9 mm sizer die. Some of my buddies recommend using the 38 super undersize die from EGW and just thought of using it since I already had one available. Once it goes through the 9mm sizer die, I don't get the ring marks after it passes stage 2 with the 38 super undersized die. At least now, I know why it causes ring marks on the 9mm casing and not with 38 super and thanks for the info. So far, I really liked the setup with less wasted brass, powder and bullets.

Azone, I would recommend getting a Redding 9x19 sizing die and trying that. Most, if not all your brass will chamber perfectly. I would also use Dillon Lube, it does make a difference.

I've used the dillon case lube before and it work great as far as lubricating the case. The only thing I did not like about it is that it forms some gunk in my casefeed over time and the unused brass sprayed with it also gets gunky over time. I just started using one shot and the difference I see is that it dries up after a min. When I spray my casings, it does not even leave any wet residue the towel or paper. I still have to see how it performs over time and check for gunk problems as well using one shot case lube.

Use a towel with some laquer thinner or rubbing alcohol and the lube gunk comes right off. I have to push a towel through my casefeed tube every now and then. Think of it as maintenance.......

Dillon did design all their products to make our lives easier loading ammo.....but there is some things we have to do to keep the machines running....

For lubing my cases I just take a 1 gal. zip lock baggie, squirt a little One Shot into it, add cases, and shake. No residue in casefeeder and no need to clean finished rounds when done. Just load up and shoot them!
