1911jerry
Being really new to the sport, I keep my eyes open and observe everything. At a recent match, I held a comtetitor's gun and racked the slide in the safe area. The sping felt super soft. When asked, he indicated he cut off 4 coils off a 14# recoil spring to get it soft as it is. He was shooting 185 grain JHP, 45 acp and sadi he used 5.1 grains of clays. Is there a reason to soften the spring? does it soften recoil, muzzle flip? Any advice for a new shooter who would like to learn. Loves2Shoot
If you want it softer, use a softer spring, it is easier. There is a trade off between softeness and reliabilty/durability. For stock guns, I think the STI recoil master is pretty good for a soft shooting reliable chambering spring, but 12-14 lbs springs are pretty common. Cutting springs is sort of shade tree gunsmith (and yes I've done it before in a pinch), just buy the right parts you need IMO.
