Ear Protection

Recommended Posts

I shot Area 5 this past yr and seen quite a few guys with hearing protection in the ear/Canal. No muffs, kind of like Walkers game ear ITC(In The Canal). Kind of like a hearing aid. The guys said they paid about $400 for the set. I have seen sport ear and others but not for that price. Any clues of some brands??

Radiens makes a set for $70-100. Bought mine on the last day of the SHOT Show. Pretty good for shooting casually. They also work at matches provided you are not acting as an RO. They are not suitable for ROing because they do not block enough sound.

Went Internet crawling for you. Here is a list of some links to help you.

I was just sitting there and it hit me, the name of the product.

Sport Ear

The guys said they worked great. Still kind of pricey, $500 for the set.

Flyin,

Did you decide on any of them? I'm kinda interested in the Earinc's digitals I'm going to call them Monday and see about ordering them. I use electronic muffs now and although they work great, they're hot in the summer! I need more comfort.

I got my custom ear plugs from EARInc. They are just down the road in Boulder so it was really convenient. Mine are not electronic , just the moulded kind. I was very impressed with the service and they are really comfortable to wear.

Not sure how well the electronic ones work and whether they offer enough protection for shooting Open.

Take a look at the Insta-Mold plugs from EAR Inc. Got a set for shooting and another set for the flight line. They work very well. Definitely a higher noise reduction that a set of David Clark muffs or the yellow foam EAR plugs.

A local shooter is doing them for $35 a set. I've seen some places charge as much as $50.

I bought a pair of Ear Inc's MiniCanals this week. All I can say is they're great. The electronics do not shut off when shots are fired but filtered and the noise is greatly reduced. I was shooting in a Single Stack Match today and the shots sounded like someone popping small plastic bags. I shoot with a pair of Ridgeline Pro Ears. I love them except that it gets way too hot shooting in the middle of the day. The Mini Canals by Ear Inc, are comfortable, and work and sound just like the Pro Ears without the bulky mass.

You're right to be concerned about skipping the ear muffs in Open. I wouldn't do it. There's a large bone behind your ear which can carry sound energy to the small internals of your ear - enough to cause hearing loss. Earmuffs cancel most of that for you.

Not really a big deal with Limited but I would guess that shooting WWB in Production - a 115gr at supersonic speeds - would cause a blast wave similar to an Open gun. My $.02

I wear EAR foam plugs all thru a match & hang my muffs on my belt until its time to shoot or when another Open shooter is going at it nearby, and for RO'ing just about anyone. Virtually no hearing loss in 18yrs of shooting. But the electronic plugs sure sound cool for Limited.
