Dillon XL750 for a newbie

Don't overthink it....

Pick the caliber you need the most of.

Buy the Dillion XL750 COMPLETE WITH DIES for that caliber

Other than that you need

A strong bench to mount the press - Bench movement will cause random problems

A powder scale - I've been through several over 30 years of reloading.  I'm using this:

https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/frankford-arsenal-ds-750-electronic-powder-scale

A micrometer - I use this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Hornady-Digital-Caliper/dp/B07VJ9DCXB

You are going to learn stuff....

You are going to buy more stuff...

All part of the journey, I'm 30 years in and I learn stuff all the time!

For components

Buy some PROCESSED brass that is ROLL SIZED from someone here on the forums.  Trust me.

Everyone has a favorite powder - Vihtavuori N320 is very popular right now - I've loaded it in .40 and 9mm

Primers - take whatever you can get...small rifle or small pistol for .40 and 9, BOTH WORK in pistol just fine.  Chat up the clerks.... Play the new guy card... ask for help.

Chronograph - find a buddy with one and use his! Don't shoot it! LOL!

HAVE FUN!

I have had a Dillon XL 750 in the cart online for months now.  I keep talking myself in and out of it.  I am 40 and have been reloading since I was 16.  However, only for hunting and PR. So at most, 20-50 rounds at a time.

I have just started shooting more USPSA and 3-gun stuff.  The $1,200 for the Dillon set up I want is hard to swallo.  I decided I could get buy with my single stage and chargemaster.

I sat down the other night to load up 250 45 ACP rounds on my rock chucker for a steel challenge this weekend.  I made it to 50.  The XL 750 should be here sometime next week. 😄

Refer to page 21 of the 750 XL manual.  You will see an "Primer Slide Rear Travel Set Screw".  If that does not allow the primer slide to travel far enough back you may need to adjust the position of the upper mount for the "Primer slide operating rod".

I helped a buddy of mine with the same issue.  If my memory serves me correctly I needed to adjust the height of the Mount for the Primer slide operating rod.  See in the diagram below.   How that rod interacts with the upper roller determines how far the Primer slide moves.

After that adjustment is made and the primer slide is picking up primers you may need to adjust the Primer Slide Forward Travel adjustment Screw/locknut.  This ialso found on page 21 of the 750XL manual.

Curious if anyone has run the Nighthawk TRS Comp? I’ve picked up a few and they’re really well built. Some videos out there showing some good reliability for such a tuned gun. Plus, I think I could trade in both my vehicles so I could carry it while I walk to work.
