Did you guys know you there's a tiny little space between the back (top) of the barrel, and the frame?

There's a round boss on the back of the barrel where it mates up to the frame. Above and below is a small clearance, usually around .002 to .003. It is the equivalent of free floating a rifle barrel so the point of impact doesn't shift as the barrel heats up.

The gap on my 617 is WAY bigger than that.

Yes, exactly. Mine was "welded"  closed with .22 lead and crap :)
