Revo Barrel Length Revisited

Airedale

Recommended Posts

I traded into a 6 1/2" 25-2 a while back and have been using it regularly. I was shooting my 5" 625 PC.

Since I started shooting the long barrel, my performance has improved dramatically! My classifier scores are edging up and my field courses have really improved.

Anyone else dusted off the old 25 and found any improvement?

One variable I have considered is that I'm starting my 2d year in USPSA and I'm probably in the learning curve upswing.

Not a 25, but I had similar when I switched from a 627 .357 to the .38 super, gun was just better suited to me personally even though its the same frame etc.

Maybe the "balance" of the gun just fits you better and thus you shoot it better???

I have an Identical 625 borrowed from a friend that is set up exactly like my match gun except it has a .400 trigger and mine is the .325.

I shoot it better at longer ranges than mine but still do Ok with mine. Like I said the other is a back-up so better not get too used to it!!!!

Stick with what is more "comfortable"

Airedale,

When I shoot my 617 w/ a 6" barrel it feels like I actually hit what I am aiming at (!) - I think it's the longer sight radius. Maybe this is part of your improvement?

I have been looking for a 627 with a a 6 1/2" barrel to see if it helps me.

Goodluck.

Ron, I actually have an 8-3/8" barrel off a 25-5 that I had fitted to my 25-2! Last year I put the original barrel back on so I could use the gun for ipsicking, but I've always liked lots of sight radius. It's a little muzzle-heavy, though, I think I'd like a "1950-style" tapered barrel, but I don't think they ever made a long tube like that.....

  • 1 month later...

Has anyone had problems with lower velocity with their 6.5 barrel compared to thier 5 inch barrell on their 625. Mine shoots almost a 100 feet per sec. slower. I have tried two different 25-2's and they both shoot slower.

dg,

I did this unscientific test this evening in the pasture.

Temp 86F, chrono in the shade

Load 230Gr FMJ (Mont Gold), 4 gr Clays, OAL 1.2, mixed brass, Fed primers

Loaded ammo last night, pulled from moonclipped match/practice ammo

Chrono on sawhorse table, shots fired freehand from the Gator tailgate.

6 shots fired per revolver

Revo ............................Avg velocity (fps)

My current 25-2 6.5" bbl ...............733.16

My "new" 25-2 6.5" bbl ................788.33

My PC 625-8 5" bbl ..................759.83

Hoppy's 625-3 5" bb.....................770.0

My 625-10 2" bbl................... 725.16

My current 25-2 is the one I was shooting when I made 165.1PF at Ky State. My new one will go from backup to primary.

I wouldn't have shot Hoppy's 625...but it was for science :D

Hope this helps,

Dave

Thanks Dave, I am not sure what is going on with my 25-2. Fact. remington ammo shoots 187PF from 5 Inch and 179 in 6.5 inch. Been trying to work up new loads with 200 grainers but it bothers me I have to boost velocity to make major in 25-2.

DGSmith,

Maybe tighter longer barrel just has more drag! <_<

also could be just a little more gap between forcing cone and cylinder letting some gas go the wrong way

Don't know, all guns are different !!! <_<

Good luck with it !!!

Hopalong

Airedale, Don't wear my gun out before I get it !!!! ;)
