tires2burn
What is the upside or downside to loading steel cases?
Youngeyes
I don't reload steel. Too brittle. You can do it, but it takes more effort and doesn't last long. Also a lot of steel is berdan primed. Tula .223 is berdan.
tires2burn
Since I posted I loaded up a dozen and they shot & cycled fine but as you state they will probably work harden after a few loadings. These were Tula 45 ACP with boxer primers and they loaded as easily as brass. I was just curious so now I know they will work if I ever get in a pinch for brass. mlmiller1
What i hear is the steel isnt very good at gripping bullets. Springback on steel is much greater than brass. I suppose as long as a person made sure bullets werent prone to setback, steel would be fine. Especially in a lost brass match.
tires2burn
I gave them the old push test against the bench & they were good.
dauntedfuture
I think that you are going to wear your dies a little more with steel then brass. Many steel cases have a coating on them. The case steel is softer then the carbide of your die so I should think that increased wear would be minimal at best. I just don't see a reason to do it other then you could pick up your cases with a magnet after a shoot....
