Free wireless at airports

I was in PDX over the weekend and they've got free WiFi. There are signs about saying that its only on the main level...however I found that they've got also on the lower levels (like where Alaska is located).

Useful travel hint -

Take an outlet splitter (get the type which is a short exension cord with separated 3 prong outlets on the end which can accomodate simulateneous transformer blocks). Since airports outlets can be scarce, a splitter will let you share with the two folks who beat you to the outlet in the waiting area by your flight (and chances are the people who were already squeezed out for plug space did not bring splitters with them).

The 8 outlet plug strip get‘s an arched eyebrow or two at the X-ray machine, but you are right Rob, it is a great thing when you need it ;-)

Another important thing to have if you us e WiFi and have POP e-mail (as opposed to Hotmail, MSN, yahoo, AOL etc...) is to get a POP mail forward account so you can push your outgoing e-mail through a high port. This is a necessity nowadays ever since WiFi services and public LAN systems started locking down their SMTP servers to prevent SPAM relaying and other unauthorized usage. They almost always block port 25 which is where POP mail exits. If you use a service like MailHop from www.dyndns.com or someone similar, your mails is pushed out a higher unblocked port and relayed through their server on the normal path from there on.

Very valuable service if you are a road dawg with POP accounts instead of IMAP mail. Typical cost is $20-35/year, not bad at all.
