The N. C. State match is less than a month away and things are shaping up, the stages are set and prop construction is underway. Of course a little fine tuning of target and no shoot placement won’t happen until the day before the SO’s shoot on the 14th.

Local shooters will have two matches this month to get some last minute practice.

Applications are coming in daily (a couple from California) as people’s plans for the match season are firming up and thoughts of qualifying for this year’s National Championship take shape. Accumulating points for the Nationals can be an expensive proposition, working a sanctioned match can save you a high dollar match fee. If you would like to work this match give Dean a call at 919-805-0370.

The NC State match is only 17 days away and Mother Nature is proving to be a mother f….. The average high for us this time of year is in the low to mid 50’s with an average high of 53 in mid-February, recently most days have been 10 to 35 degrees below average, not conducive to building props and generally making ready for the match.

I sure hope the weather improves, nevertheless we will prevail and the match will happen, we might not get everything done we wanted to but rest assured it won’t affect the stages at all, maybe some of the “eye candy”.

The weather gave us a break earlier this week and we got a key stage set up, you’re gonna’' love this one.

Standing on a triggering box looking through a window on the beep step off, draw and shoot the first three targets using cover with 2 to the body and 1 to the head, simple right? Did I mention the first target is a flash, the second is a swinger and the third is a static? Still not too bad until you throw in a double swinger with 2 non threats in front of the target swinger, all moving at different speeds, oh yeah at least one of the swinging non threats passes in front of the static target. If you’re still have bullets left after that move down the wall and engage 3 more targets using cover with 2 to the body and 1 to the head for 18 rounds. Lots of hard shots on this one, good luck.

He has an 18 round standards stage that will have you shooting free style, strong hand only, and weak hand only.

Just for old times’ sake the match includes a stage with a moving reload (yes it’s legal).

The dastardly round wall will return for another 18 rounder in bay 1 (hint-every movement forward puts you behind a different piece of cover). This one has 2 movers also but they’re easy (yeah right).

For those of you that are going to have tax issues this April he mentioned something about a jail stage with bars and handcuffs.

As the build continues I’ll drop in with more updates

We still could use a few more good SO’s, this is a great opportunity to shoot a high level match just before the S&W Indoor Nationals for not much more than travel expenses.

Give Dean or Bev a call, their info is on the website.

I’m back, with an update.

A little more info on the stages, I’ve mentioned three of the key stages in the match, another is the truck stage.

Standing at the front of the truck engage 6 targets with 2 body shots and 1 head shot with the first target at “bad breath” distance, the others are shot down either side and through the windshield and back window. The distance isn’t the problem the angles are.

Another is the evil twin of the dreaded “Fuel Depot” only this time the barrels provide the cover and the targets are mostly behind the wall. Many good shooters took 30 to 50 seconds to shoot this one in its first incarnation. 9 targets with the possibility of seeing the same one from more than one location (this can really mess with your round/target count during the shooting (don’t ask me how I know).

The stage I mentioned in my first post with the flash, swinger, static and 2 swinging no shoots has been made easier (I think) by eliminating the head shots on all the targets, instead all you have to do is put 4 rounds on each (wait a minute, now I’ve got 8 chances to hit the no shoots instead of 6). Two of the targets at the end of the wall have been eliminated to put the round count for this stage at 16.

We have a stage that combines shooting on the move with low cover, and another stage is a house with a four way intersection and a round wall.

Plan on shooting free style, strong hand only, weak hand only, backing up, moving sideways and sitting down (if you do a little dry fire while squatting that might not be a bad idea).

On one stage you’ll pick up your gun from a table and load it before shooting, on another the gun will be in your hand loaded with 6 rounds. The others draw from the holster.

12 mandatory head shots, 6 of them weak hand only.

I was going to give an extended weather report but who the heck knows maybe if we all close our eyes and click our heels together three times the sun will shine, as they say on TV it’s only weird if it doesn’t work.

Only three days remain to get a spot in the match.
