Dillon dies

Recommended Posts

In a single stage press I think you'll be happier with dies from another manufacturer due to the lack of a flaring die and ease of adjustment. I personally like the Lee dies as they are fast and easy to adjust when changing loads and OAL. I use Lee dies in my 650, a U die in station one and a FCD in station 5 in both .40 and 9mm. I have tried the Dillon dies, but they currently reside in my storage cabinet, with the exception of the powder dies of course. Redding, Lyman, and RCBS dies all work for me as well.

Dillon pistol die sets contain three dies:

  • Deprime/Resize Die (station 1)
  • (case flare is done by the powder funnel at station 2 on the XL650)
  • (powder check is done at station 3)
  • Bullet Seating Die (station 4)
  • Case Crimp Die (station 5)

A very nice feature on the Dillon dies is the ability to quickly dismantle them for cleaning without having to remove them from the press or make any adjustments.

Regular pistol die sets contain three dies:

  • Deprime/Resize Die
  • Case Flare Die
  • Bullet Seating/Case Crimp Die (functions combined to save you a step)

If you buy a "Regular" set of dies, and if you intend to use all five stations on the XL650, you will still need to buy a Dillon Case Crimp die unless you buy a separate crimp die for the "Regular" set (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/214068/redding-taper-crimp-die-9mm-luger).

Personally, on the XL650 I use the Redding micrometer-adjustable competition seating die (http://www.brownells.com/reloading/reloading-dies/handgun-dies/redding-competition-pistol-bullet-seater-dies-prod33529.aspx) at station 4 and a Dillon crimp die at station 5. I will someday use a Redding competition adjustable crimp die at station 5 when they come out (http://www.brownells.com/reloading/reloading-dies/rifle-dies/micro-adjustable-taper-crimp-dies-adjustable-taper-crimp-die-38-super-9mm-sku100-020-360-56891-116798.aspx). I find that having the crimp function separate from bullet seating is a very good thing.

One thing I do like from Lee is the factory crimp. Can that be used in a 650?

Yes, I use a LFCD on my 9mm, 380, 40S&W, 45ACP, and .223 Rem tool heads. I did order a few packages of the Dillon lock rings. The dies are fairly short for the Dillon tool heads, and some of my Lee lock rings would not bite on the die because it was threaded in so far. The Dillon rings seem to work a bit better, plus the Dillon wrench now works for all my lock rings.
