DWG007
What is the proper way to leave the hammer when storing a 1911/2011 pistol for storage (a few weeks to months)? Assuming the pistol is cleaned and well-lubed for protection of course. Does it make a difference? Thanks.
lynn jones
always hammer down!
DWG007
I posted the question because pisols have been shipped to me from very well-known gunsmiths with the hammer cocked or at half-cock. Thanks.
Steve Moneypenny
correct me if i'm wrong experts. but!!! a half cock notch should not even be USED in a 1911 because dropping to half cock contacts teh sear with a different mating surface and can chip, batter or otherwise damage the sear ruining your trigger job. BEDELLCUSTOM
always store with the hammer down. halfcock notch is only a safety to catch the hammer if it falls without the trigger being pulled. also to clarify, that is store with the hammer down on an empty chamber, especially on a 70 series type pistol. Dan Burwell
Steve, To answer your question... It depends on the Hammer a lot of hammers like the SVI hammers have a half cock notch that will engage the sear in a place (middle) other than where the hammer hooks will engage (sides). With a hammer like this it is much less likely to ruin you trigger job. Some hammers are not like this and the half-cock notch will kill your trigger job on the first fall.
