APL-G35
Anybody know of a specific clamshell block for working on a sportical upper receiver? The one I have is for a mil spec upper and I don't really want to modify it. Any links would be greatly appreciated.
Prariedog
Other than it being a slick side I do not see any real problem with using a clam shell holder. Of course I could be wrong but they do not appear to be really different from photos.
APL-G35
I thought the same thing but the clamshell doesn't close all the way. It hid on the ribs of the extrusion it's actually quite a lot different.
Prariedog
Not a clam shell but sold by DPMS and would work for your purposes. http://www.midwayusa.com/Product/730930/dpms-upper-receiver-action-block-ar-15-delrin

hoytwt
I have used the dpms block shown above on 4 different upper builds. Worked good for me. I do believe a clamshell unit would be more supportive.

It the upper is a flat top, these blocks work just fine. What I do is put the upper/block sideways in the vise w/ a block of wood between the vise and the top rails. It's very solid when done this way. -rvb

That tool works great, it has a boss that supports the upper from the inside. No problem installing barrels at all.
