Any good low profile thumb safety?

Forgetful

Recommended Posts

My stock safety on my STI hurts my hand where my thumb joint is. I have fairly small hands so they don't get around the gun that great. And if I rotate my hand so my thumb isn't hitting the safety I can barely reach the trigger.

My question is can I grind the safety down without compromising the function/integrity of the metal? Is there a really low profile replacement safety?

Attached is a pic of the area hurting me. yrynehe6.jpg

I had the same problem where the corner of the thumb safety was rubbing my thumb raw. Coincidently, my thumb was also getting slide bite. Turns out the relief cuts in the BTGS were the cause of both problems because it allowed the gun to sit really deep in my hand. So while it resulted in a high grip, it was causing me sore spots and blood from where the sllide was nailing me.

I changed out the BTGS for an Ed Brown, and both problems went away. Now all of my STI's have the Ed Brown grip safety.

Okay just to update.

I've tried to go the cheap route for now. I took my safety off and used the dremmel until I felt I was going to compromise the strength of the safety. It feels a lot better, not 100% perfect but given the way the thumb safety pivot hole is drilled into the frame I think I'll have to deal. Maybe with a titanium super metal I could grind it down more without fearing breakage.

I'm not sure how the grip safety would benefit from being changed...
