38 Spec Heavy Bullet loads

3-Liter

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a 38 bullet for USPSA minor power loads with a heavy bullet and a lower velocity. All I can find are 158 gr bullets. I now use Berry's 158 gr RN plated but would like to try a heavier and slower bullet. Also what loads do shooters use with the heavy bullets? Thanks, 3-Liter

midway has some heavier bullets; http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?pageNum=1&tabId=1&categoryId=17802&categoryString=9315***652***19785***9015***7564***

Lyman's loading book has data for up to 170 grain bullets, and i suspect that if you search a bit on the web you might find data for 200 grain bullets as they used to be offered in 38 special factory loads.

Magnus http://www.magnusbullets.com/ Makes a 200 grain lead roundnose bullet.

H&N from Germany has in the past had a 200 grain round nose plated bullet available here: http://www.rocosystem.com/ It isn't listed on their web site but you might be able to call them for availability.

Alliant used to list max of 3.0 of Bullseye with the 200 grain round nose lead bullet for .38 Special on their web site. That gave me a 130 power factor in my 4 inch gun. PlusP was 3.3 grains of Bullseye with the 200 LRN.

I might add something to watch out for.. If you are using a fluffy powder like Trailboss that just about fills a 38spl case and you seat a bullet like a 180gr turny master then that load is going to be extremely compressed. I dont know if it would be explosive but i would use caution.

I shoot Action Pistol which has a powerfloor for minor is 125 and my two pet loads are 147swc with 4.6gr 231 or a 158wc with 4.3gr of trailboss, both get me in the 128-132pf range

Laser cast has a 180gr Beveled Base Flat Point that some of my rifles "REALLY" like. There I am loading the 180 over 5.1 gr. of Unique in a 357 Mag case with an OAL of 1.601" to feed reliably in multiple lever actions.

This is about 1200 fps out of a 20" carbine.
