D.Hayden
Anyone recognize the rifle that was used on the Topshot episode 5? Model number (maybe 1873?) http://www.winchestercollector.org/guns/1873.shtml I thought about getting one in 38 Special.. this episode definitely has me wanting one. Any advice on makes/models to look at or avoid. This one in 357 Mag seems like it would be a great plinker: http://www.winchesterguns.com/products/catalog/detail.asp?family=022C&mid=534162
Flatland Shooter
I'd bet the 1873's used in the last Top Shot were a very nice replicas. If I had an pair of original 1873's in that condition you would not see anyone trying to compete with them. Cimarron Arms makes a nice 1873 replica if that's the way you want to go. However, that 1892 is one sweet rifle. Heck, for the price of a new open gun you can get one of each. Bill
SteveZ
the 1873 is probably made by Uberti and then imported by any number of companies. 1892's come in various forms. Rossi's were popular. I recently picked up a Chiappa 1892 SRC and love it.
Modoc
The '73 is a good rifle and what I am using as a main match rifle for Cowboy. The 1892 is also good, I ran one of them for about 15 years and started to out run it this year. Depending on what you want to do they both are very good. Check out Pioneer Gun Works and Taylor's & Co. for some of these rifles. If you want to run full house 357 Mag loads go with the 1892, it is a much stronger action. I'll be happy to answer any questions that you have about either or both rifles.

There are many variants but be prepared to pay about $1,100.00 for a good one. I think someone else said they all come from Uberti, but I do think there is another company out there making them, but I wouldn't go there. Also, these things right out of the box are NOT fun to shoot. They need a little work by someone who knows what they are doing. If you buy on from Taylor's, Cody Conager can slick it up for about $250.00. You cans also buy one ready to go from Cowboys and Indians (Google it). The Taylors 1892's are made by Chiappa...and you can get them for about $100-$200 less from Legacy Sports. Edited July 16, 2010 by SteveZ
D.Hayden
Can't belive this is this old... just over 2 years. been looking casually since the first post, some of them I came across I thought were too heavy. And wanted to feel one in person. Came across a Rossi M92, 20" Stainless this weekend.. nice and light.. and picked it up. Just came back from firing it.. what a blast! Modoc
Dave, Glad to see that you finally took a step "back" in firearms. Most people do enjoy these, I've personally worn out two

I can see it now the new rage..... You need to get one.. The wife will love it.. 38 SPL.. in a rifle.. has about the same kick as a 22 Major.. maybe with 357? But 38 SPL holds 12+1 vs 10+1.. I can see a 300 yard target.. you'd have to aim at the moon. lol Modoc. What wears out? The actions?
Modoc
Dave, It just got too sloppy for Cowboy action and was becoming unreliable at speed. I had an "action job" done on it and then shot 3 matches a month plus practice, hunting, plinking, etc. In reality, it would probably be going strong if the "action job" hadn't been done. Now it is a pig gun on a ranch in Salinas. Bad part is, I paid for the action job to be done, now I know enough to just stone off the high spots and shoot the snot out of it. Have broken the firing pin and one hammer (wife's '92). Other than put good sights (Marble's gold bead and Buckhorn), haven't really done much else except change springs as they wear out. Mainly the Magazine spring.
