1911 recoil spring

Well, I put in a 17# mainspring and a 14# recoil spring for the match yesterday. The recoil was improved. I had no light strikes in about 120 rounds but I am using federal primers. I also tried running a Wilson combat shok buff. It ran fine but another guy shooting a 1911 said the cp ones will not get chewed up as fast. He warned me about battering my slide using the 14# recoil spring even with my barely major pf loads.

I would continue to use 14lb spring with the shock buff. After a couple of hundred round take out the shock buff and see if it getting battered. If not don't worry about it! Been using that for about 20 or 30K now. I have never had that problem.

I run 9lb recoil spring with a 16lb main sping in my colt gold cup. It is the sweetest 45 i have ever shot. There is almost no muzzle rising and the gun feels and behaves more like 40 i.e the slide goes back in a "flat" manner. With a heavier spring the slide rises much higher. But at the end of the day it is a question of personal preference.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned much is that if you want your "double taps" real close together you can adjust the spacing by changing recoil springs.

If they are further apart than you wish, get someone to watch and see if the 2nd round goes higher or lower than the first round. If the second goes lower, then try a lighter recoil spring. If higher, try a heavier spring. You can usually notice a difference if you vary the weight by 1 lb at a time.

Personally, I run a 19lb main spring and a 15lb variable rate recoil spring and a shock buff. I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the different brands of shock buffs but it's posssible some might last longer than others.

My normal load is 4.5grs of Clays and a 200 LSWC by Missouri Bullets.
