38 SC with Autocomp

I use it!

7.9 grains behind a 121 IFP from MG in my SV 38SC makes 170 PF.

very clean

cheaper than VV.

Recoil/dot movement compared to Vit?

When I can get the grip right, dot does not move out of the glass.

I compared the AutoComp load to a batch of 7526 loads that make 169 out of my SV and it was worlds better. So little flip and the dot barely moves. I am very pleased with this load. Lee Neel worked it up so he has the specifics.

This may benefit someone, so I'll share.

Gun is a Bedell shorty with some slide lightening.

Cartridge is 38 SC.

Load is:

-Wolf Small Rifle Primer

-New Starline Brass

-MG 124 FMJ

-Autocomp powder

-OAL of 1.260"

-Crimp measurement of 0.378"

All groups are based on eight rounds shot.

All velocities are measured in feet per second.

#1

6.5 gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity: 1074

High - not recorded

Low - not recorded

ES - not recorded

#2

7.0 gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity - 1209

High - 1246

Low - 1154

ES - 92

#3

7.2 gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity - 1264

High - 1281

Low - 1227

ES - 54

#4

7.4 gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity - 1307

High - 1318

Low - 1287

ES - 31

#5

7.6 gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity - 1329

High - 1319

Low - 1341

ES - 22

#6

7.8 gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity - 1357

High - 1366

Low - 1347

ES - 19

I'll increase by 0.1 grains and call it good.

The gun is not zeroed, but had a pair of 10 x 10 targets stacked top to bottom and set back 50 yards. Shot off elbows and put at least 1/3 of them on the paper I was 'aiming' at. I'll take that for now.

Next week I'll zero the pistol and wait to shoot it at a local match. When I zero I'll also capture the velocities and post them.

I'll drag his bigger brother (40 open) with me to the next two big matches in June.

I can't tell how the dot is moving yet. The set up I was using creates tons of blast into the face and I close my eyes to shoot. I hope to see improvement over the 40.

Next step is to bolt the bench to the wall and start cranking out some rounds.

Later.

Darren

That's good info. Your first load looks like it would be a good one for steel...enough powder to work the comp a little, but not so hot it'll have much recoil or flip to contend with.

If you're going to shoot more than local matches I think you're going to want more than a tenth over that last load which averaged 167PF...get it into the 172-173 range and you won't likely go Minor at a big match (still possible, but not as likely). R,

Thanks for the advise.

I'll make some 8.0 and see where they chrono when I shoot the 7.9. I'll be sure to bring enough of each to sight in with either load.

At 6.5 I had a few fail to eject fully. I'm not sure if it was me limping it or if the load wouldn't cycle the slide completely. Didn't have that problem with any of the other loads.

I have a buddy who's using Autocomp with 124s or 125s (can't recall) in his 5" gun and I think he's using right around 8gr...maybe a tenth either way.

I'd expect you'd have to use a pretty light recoil spring to get something quite as light as that 6.5gr load to work reliably....probably 7 or 8#. R,

So just thinking ahead here...

If the dot still buzzes in and out of the window, should I increase the load until a 180 pf? If no dice then start swapping recoil springs?

I don't know how it feels or how the dot moves just yet, need to wait for a local match. Or take it to the local pit and just shoot at the dirt.

I couldn't find my results from the 8.0 grains load pushing a 124 MG, so I re-shot it.

But this time it's a Sierra 125 JHP.

#7

8.0gr of Autocomp

Avg velocity - 1357

High - 1381

Low - 1337

ES - 44

SD - 12

This will give me a 169.6 PF

I wish I could find the other load data. I placed it next to the PC, but can't find it now.

Think I should bump another 0.1 or 0.2 of a grain to ensure I make major? With the above and a 3 SD from the average the low just barely gives me major. So statistically....I'm borderline.

I think I'll run the Open 40 in Indiana this weekend, burn up some of those rounds first. Maybe...

I am currently loading as follows:

38 SC= Starline

7.6 grains=Autocomp

Primer=WSR

OAL= 1.24

I am running a Para frame with STI slide (lightened), EGW comp, 8# spring and Schuemann 3 port barrel

Here is my most recent check:

PF

1384.00 171.616

1371.00 170.004

1392.00 172.608

1373.00 170.252

1379.00 170.996

1377.00 170.748

1383.00 171.492

1372.00 170.128

1382.00 171.368

1376.00 170.624

1378.900 =average 170.984 =average

This has been very consistent at the last three matches that had chrono. 170.8, 171.2 and 170.9
