  1. Don't load ammo until you actually have the open gun in hand. The barrel in your open gun drives your loads. Do you know what barrel (brand) is going in your open gun?

We shoot JHP all the time. Probably the most used bullet in Open. The OAL you stated is a little short. Mags with spacers should allow 1.165

  2. Just ordered a Phoenix Trinity Aluminum Grip with the regular texture. Any feedback from those of you that use one on their open gun? How do they compare to the other brands? If you could do it over again would you change the texture? Would you go with the stainless steel or the titanium?

My reason for going with a metal grip is when I do a mag change, I squeeze the crap out of the STI polymer grip and the mag won't fall out. Only happens in a match and never when I practice or dry fire. I'm hoping this fixes my problem. Anyone else have that problem and used this solution to fix it?

I've had one for a long time. The regular texture is not very aggressive.

  3. Hey Everyone,

So here is the question that has been bugging me for a while. Why is it against the USPSA Production rules to recreate a gun from the production gun list (lets abbreviate with PGL). I can't exactly find the wording in the current rule book but I know I have heard it many times here and elsewhere that this is not "legal".

    My examples:

Stock II - My unicorn production gun would be one of the Australian long barreled EAA Stock II's (on the PGL) with all the goodies from the Xtreme Stock II (also on the PGL). So why couldn't you simply get a limited in 9mm remove the magwell and swap out the single action parts with the double action parts. The limited is identical to the long barreled Stock II, except with single action only trigger, markings on the slide and 4 holes in the frame for the option to mount an optic, no functional difference. I would also be able to shoot this gun in limited or open with a separate barrel, and it is much easier to get your hands on this way than finding one of the Australian version Stock II's.

Glock 34/35 - If you all ready have a G35 and you are able to get an upper half from a G34 for use with production, why should that be outlawed? This situation goes for any platform that has interchangeable lowers and uppers.

    My logic:

If you can lesson the number of complete guns the shooter has to have to compete in different divisions whats so wrong with that? Also, as long as nothing done is giving the shooter an unfair advantage what is the problem? What exact working in the rules prohibits the above examples?

It is really simple. A manufacturer must produce the gun and submit paperwork to USPSA -then the gun meets Prodcution rules.

The word "Production" is the key. Think, off-the-shelf and available to the general public.

  4. I went back and forth on a thumbrest on my open guns. Recently went back to a thumbrest and realized the thumbrest was quite useful. Stablized my grip and the gun seems to point the same every time.

Personally I think the Go Guns are to bulky and do not provide enough thumb position flexibilty. Not everyone's hands are the same size. I think the Quinn III with intergral thumb rest by A/A is pretty cool. I am waiting for my smith to retap my C-more holes to accomodate the larger screws. The thumb rest angle and position can be adjusted.

  5. Well it was at a tier 3 IDPA match, so they chronoed the ammo and it tested fine. I just tried the gun with a Wilson mag and snap caps. I loaded it up with 10 rounds and did a slide lock reload. I then manually cycled the gun and twice on the third or fourth round the slide only closed about 1/4" and the head of the bullet was on the ramp just below the barrel entrance.

Please excuse the crappy iphone picture, but here is an example:

    14555894413_b02d54a2f9_c_d.jpg

When it is this type of failure a good slap to the back of the slide fixes the issue, but sometimes the bullet head is much lower and it locks everything up.

Let me start out with saying I love my STI trojan 9mm pistol. Its is super accurate and I shoot it better than any gun I own. My problem is while it works perfectly at the range, it is getting worse and worse at matches. I am getting so many feed failures that it is killing my game. I shot an IDPA match yesterday, 10 stages and on eight of them I had at least one feed failure. I elected to reshoot a stage because the SO started me wrong on one of those failures even though I shot well, hoping to improve without the feed failure. Well that was a mistake because on the reshoot it failed even worse. So, that actually made 9 out of 11 stages where it failed.

What seems to be happening is the round nose dives and jams and locks things up really tightly. There are times when it is not too bad and I can just give the back of the slide a hard slap and it will go into battery. Other times it jams so tight I can't pull the mag and have to ultimately get it to slide lock and then it is still a struggle to remove the magazine. To say this thing killed my times would be an understatement. At a loss as to what to do.

I had my gunsmith look at it a while ago and he said the tension on the extractor was a little low so he raise it, but I think that has actually made it worse. Yesterday I was using six different 10 round mags: two each of Wilson ETM, Tripp Cobra and Dawson. I saw a slight issue with one of the Wilsons, but other than that I could not narrow it down to any specific brand acting worse than the others.

I have the Dawson Precision CRP package with the IDPA legal extended mag release. Some people said it might have to do with that, but I am skeptical.

    All ideas welcomed. Thanks.

PS - if it matters I am using factory round nose 124 grain ammo.

I have found (1) The mag release CAN change the height of the mag!!!!! Which can cause feeding problems. Nose down jams.

    (2) Mag springs can cause nose down

    (3) Your OAL is to long, but the gun should run 100% on round nose store bought.

I kept my Spartan V stock except for the trigger componets. Various mags and it runs 100% on RN that I load. I load short! My loads are 145PF though. I kept reducing the OAL until success. I also run xtreme plated 124s.

  6. Is there good resistance when you set the primer? How old is the brass?

it's once fired brass and yes, primers look ok to me. If I have to guess it's this batch of brass since it's mainly the "new" variable to this equation. But again, this is the problem with 9major. There are too many variables.

The BEST thing you can do. (1) Borrow some HS6, or Sil, or WAC from someone's batch who loaded and chroned their loads and borrow WIN SRP, or CCI, or FED SRP. Or borrow a few loads from someone who shoots 9 Major all the time. This will rule out the gun or identify the gun as the problem. If it were the gun, I would get it to a known smith as soon as possibe. Unless the barrel is really shortchamber'd and the bullets are against the lands causing extreme pressue--rarely a gun problem.

Their is no mystery loading 9 Major, but something is causing extreme pressure with those loads and the gun. You could try backing the load way down and see what happens.

  7. Sarge, I'm going to have to go with whitedog on this one. Whenever I RO at my local match (every month), I don't feel competitive anymore, just feels like practice. When I visit other ranges, two or three times a month, my scores are 10% better across the board and I have a lot more fun. Not to be taken out of context, I have a lot of fun at home matches as well, I just can't put as much focus on the shooting when I'm "working".

I definitely agree. Whenever I RO a squad--my focus completely shifts and my stage performance reflects my lack of focus on shooting.

  8. I've watched every episode.

If it keeps on like last night's episode..This was a great Series.... Not so impressed with the season opener. Now you see mechnical things with wings whisking people away to the mother ship...and the aliens dropping food.....The aliens can drop laser fences but can't catch one human on dirt bike....

To many frick'n commercials for another thing....

  9. The sole advantage to 9mm that I see is you can leave your brass on the ground if you need/want to.

No, the advantage of 9mm is that 9mm brass is more common, period! Go to a major event, and you are going to lose ALL of your brass, because they don't ALLOW you to pick it up. I'd much rather lose 300+ 9mm brass that I can easily replace than 300+ 38S or 38SC, which I'm probably going to have to BUY NEW to replace.

Yup. Starline is probably the easiest new brass to get. Call them, order, and wait months till they have enough requests to schedule a run of 38S or 38SC brass.

I just don't have to wait very long to find another 3 thousand of once fired 9. New 38SC brass is $149.00 a thou + shipping. When I started shooting 38SC, new brass was around $90 and I could get once fired 9 for $18 a thou. 9 brass is now $40 a thou give or take.

I don't care how many times you can reload 38S/SC brass--when 50% of your matches are lost brass and the other 50% are local matches with tall grass and rocks--9 Major is the only option for us budget minded shooters.

Unlimited budget--I would have 38SC IMM as soon as SV could make it. In 50-60K of 9 major reloads-not one malfunction has been attributed to brass.

  10. No, that's not the only disadvantage to sc. Most people who try and convince everybody that sc is better will tell you that you can shoot SC brass more times than you can 9mm. What they don't take into consideration is that in order to do that you or somebody else has to dig around on the ground to pick it up. That is the biggest disadvantage. It is too hot here and the grass is too thick to be digging around for sc brass. 9mm is free for me so I just let it lay. <snip>

But that is the same as saying the cost of brass is the only disadvantage isn't it?

9major is tough on the brass. You need to have good practices when reloading to be sure to get consistent rounds. That may include a need to roll size 9major brass. 38sc is not as picky. Usually no need to roll size, never any crimped brass, essentially never wears out, cases are virtually never full regardless of powder. Ammo is the #1 reason for gun problems and 9major is more difficult to reload properly. For me 38sc is worth the extra cost.

To be sure I am jealous of my 9major friends when it comes to a lost brass match. That gets painful quickly with 38sc.

I disagree. You don't need to roll size 9 brass and it wears just as long as 38S brass. I have reloaded my 9 brass five or six times now. A lot depends on the load combination. I run 115s with HS6 at 175 PF. Its a myth that 38S brass is stronger than 9 brass. Just so happens I shoot a lot indoors and save my 9 brass.

  11. Thing that worries me with a loose crimp though is setback. Any one have any bullets get set back when loading without a crimp?

Why would this worry you? For 9mm, proper case sizing holds the bullet in and prevents setback, 'crimping' only removes the bell/flare after bullet seating..

and use Lee U die.....no worries on setback.

  12. Are you loading for IPSC or USPSA major? Your profile does not indicate where you are from.

In USPSA, I always look for a 170-172 PF when I chrono a new load and then I start tuning the load for dot movement. Depending on the gun configuration, some loads just won't stablize the dot very well.

  13. I have shot this classifier too many times. If you are not Flash Gordon, you basically suck on this classifier. IMO, it needs to be retired. If you changed the distance from the box to 30' versus 10', then you have a challenge.

This classifier sets the standard for "Hero or Zero". :)

  14. Not all tumbling is the result of improper crimp. Did you post the load your using? Tumbling can also be the barrel or your pushing the bullets to slow. Have you chrono'd your load?

I have loaded several different 180-200gn coated on a 650 with just about every popular die configuration.
