  1. Do the side holes like brasos makes them in there version of a tru bore barrel make a difference ?

And if they do what is the effect they create ?

I have had to many open guns :-). I have had numerous 38S and 9 Major with many different comps. The Brazos Thuundercomp II is always the winner for me.

I don't think Brazos designed that comp in a vacum. I will say the comp is better on 38S with N105 or IMR 4756. Will the comp work in 9 Major with Sil or HS6, you bet.

  2. I see a ton of crimp questions. Here is how you set your "crimp", measure the thickness of your brass near the edge, multiply this by two and add it to the diameter of the bullet. That number should be your "crimp" (i.e., the diameter of the brass near the edge).

Another reason I sort my brass by head stamp. :)

I have not been reloading my whole life. Only about 3 years. I used to sort 9mm brass by headstamp but got lazy/too busy with 2 kids so I stopped. I noticed my failure rate, accuracy number of failed case guage rounds go WAY up. Recently, i had a bunch of CBC brass that would not pass case gauge, or chamber in my 1911. I was able to blast them out of my M&P though, but the chamber was tight. I decided that I will through all the damn CBC out. It seems that the case walls are thicker than normal. could be wrong though. The biggest problem is that they all bell different so I was having problems getting them to seat straight.

It's for that reason that I decided to purchase a bunch of new 9mm brass from X-Treme Bullets and turn in the ones I have for the brass credit. I'm learning a lot from this thread and hopefully I can start out right with my first set of reloads in 9mm Major

What is the cost per thousand after your credit?

    Thanks

  3. can you use a faster powder like VV N320 with 115gr bullets in an Open Gun? (assuming that's all I can get)

I suppose you could, but fast powders are designed to burn fast and not produce a lot of gas. The more gas, the better the comp works. I would bet getting to major PF with N320 and 115 would probably create excessive pressure and risk blowing up you gun.

Stay with known powder and bullet combinations!

  4. At some point this year I'd like to order a TS, so...

Although IF money was not an object (yes we all know in real life it is), would you have a TS ACCU bushed for added accuracy? I'm a buy once cry once kinda guy and hate wishing I had done something additional after the fact if it would truly make a difference.

So, does the ACCU Bushing make a difference?

Simple answer. Yes. Only you can determine if that difference is worth the cost.

I did not get the Accu bushing. My TS is very accurate with coated/plated/jacketed. I'm shooting 180 FP

  5. If you have a local smith that can do the work, have 3 popple holes. If you have to overnight your gun, wait for a lot of work.

Popple holes help--not the Holy Grail. I currently have 5 and I'm shooting 115s with HS6. Why did I say 3 holes when I'm configured for 5--Easy answer--- I had 3 at first and shot numerous matches-I then added 2 more holes. The extra two holes did nothing in my opinion.

In the end...only you can determine if the holes were worth it.

  6. Had a Matchmaster, sold it. Like my 5" gun better. Second the advise to get a Trubor. Watch for used, good deals to be had there.

Hello: You want a full size open gun. If the world champ can drive one so can you. The Tru Bor is a great starting place as you are learning what you like. I have progressed a couple along to make a great open gun out of them. Thanks, Eric

You have been given some great advise from people who have been there and done that. You can normally find a good deal on a full size open from a well known person on the forum. You can change the recoil spring and shoot steel or major.

  7. I have a .38 Super Auto and several 9mm's. But I don't shoot major in anything, I just wanted a .38 Super. Brass is the only hitch for me. I leave my 9mm brass at the range and pick up the new once fired 9mm brass that folks leave on the floor. Nobody at my usual indoor range shoots a super let alone leave super brass lying around. So I have to buy it and I am loath to leave even one on the ground. As much as I love my super I can't argue that 9mm is cheaper and easier. Once my collection of .38 brass builds up I'll use it more often in matches.

I considered getting a 9mm barrel for the .38 but for the $300+ it would cost to buy and fit a 9mm barrel I could buy a lot of super brass..

    Shoot it then (38S).

  8. Hey guys, I am considering getting back into USPSA Open after a 10 year break. When I stopped back in 2001ish I had a 38 super Para open gun that ran like a top. I understand the popularity of the 9mm major now and have read all about the cost benfits etc. I want to build a gun now and need to pick a caliber but Im wondering WHERE IS ALL THIS CHEAP 9MM BRASS TO BE HAD?

I understand you can possibly get access to once fired range brass online for cheaper 9mm but for example buying new brass from say Starline, 1000ct of 9mm is $130 and 1000ct of 38 super is $139?

I havent looked into the price of bullet heads etc but I have a history with 38 super and load data for it. On the other hand, people keep tempting me with talk of just "leaving" 9mm brass on the ground becuase its so cheap......where are you getting it that makes it so much cheaper to reload for 9 major? Thanks in advance for any help, its a big committment to buy all the gun and reloading equipment again so Im trying to understand all scenarios..... shoot strait.

Can anyone give me a simple cost comparision of reloading 1000 38 supers vs 1000 9mms that has done both?

If your buying brass, once fired 9 is just cheaper than 38S. Many folks get 9 free from ranges. Many new shooters just leave the brass. You won't find anybody leaving 38S at the range.

Same cost for bullets and powder-so that is a wash. At major matches you have to leave brass lay. Overall-9 is just cheaper to loose.

At local matches, brass is lost in the grass. Again, overall 9 is cheaper and easier to acquire.

  9. Shooting glasses with left eye glass Rx set for normal distance. The right eye Rx is focused on the front sight. Just my long journey. Forget having any bifocal cut in the shooting glasses. You can read well enough with the right lens to see score sheet. You save money and anywhere on the lens (given different shooting angles.) the view of the sight is the same.

I wear no lines for work and the above for shooting limited. The brain adjusts to the shooting glasses pretty quick. If I could wear contacts, I would have had shooting contacts made.

    Good luck!

  10. I like the 147 HPCB in 9mm. While I do like the xtreme product, I think it is more difficult to develop an accurate load for anyone's plated bullet vs a jacketed equivalent or even coated. Xtreme's seem to have thicker plating than other brands.

Their customer service is A++. Good people to business with.

In your article it may be note worthy to explain that many people have been frustrated loading plated bullets because they failed to understand how sensitive they are to over crimping.

Look forwarding to reading your work

    Agree.

Using 9 135 HP for production, Tested 115 heavy plated for open (cheaper than MG and just as accurate), wish they would produce 115 hp in heavy plated. Waiting on 2000 180 FP for limited.

X-Treme always run sales, bullets are in stock, ships fast, mil vet discount, and the price is right. If they produce 115 hp heavy plate , I would have no need for the more expensive Montana Gold.

From what I understand their HP bullets are thick plated. Yep just read it again here:

    http://www.xtremebullets.com/Bullet-Load-Info-s/1952.htm

They do not make 115 HP heavy plate concave base. Only round nose so far.

LCS, you need to read what is on their site and not rely on the simple designations listed for each bullet. Right in the bullet and load info area, in big red letters it says "All Hollow Points are Heavy Plate Concave Base but are not designed to be used as a defense round."

This means they are ALL HPCB even if the bullet description does not say so.

Really? Do you work for X-treme? Official X-treme spokesperson? Thanks for advise I don't need. I've been using X-treme bullets for quite a long time.

  11. I will send you a PM lcs. But I am holding one of the 115 concave base heave plate HP in my hand right now.

Not arguing, but I think we are both correct Is this what you ordered ?

    9mm-115 HP

    Quantity of 500

    Diameter: 0.355

    UPC: 819304313095

    Price:$45.87

    436 in stock!

These are what I'm talking about. Notice the different description and look at the color difference. X-treme told me they don't make these in HP yet.

    9mm - 115 RN HPCB

    Quantity of 250

    Diameter: 0.355

    UPC: 819304314719

    Price:$26.18

    Quantity in Stock:416

    Product Code: XC9MM-115RNHPCB-B0250

I'm pushing 115 a lot faster as I have 5 of those pesky popple holes. I tested the RN and no probs, but HP cut better defined holes in paper.

I will call them Monday and ask if the descriptions need updating or they are different platings.

  14. (You are the RO for both shooters) Your stage has 4 paper targets and 4 steel. Last shooter has ALL Alphas and is shooting a 9MM. The next shooter completes the COF and you begin to score the targets.

One target has 4 untaped 9 MM holes. There are 3 Alphas and 1 Bravo. What is your call?

Not enough information. How many rounds did the shooter fire at that target, and how many hits per target are we scoring?

1st or 2nd shooter? Both fired 2 shots. 2 hits per target.

Ouch. According to the letter of the rule, since you can't use the previous shooter's score, and if there is no other way to differentiate between hits, it is a re-shoot. (And with most 9mm, there isn't much difference between guns/bullets, unlike the .45 example I gave above.)

So even though the RO unofficially knows that the target should be scored Alpha/Bravo, the RO should officially call for a re-shoot. Even if the shooter says they are all right with it. :(

Hm. Brings up a question---can you call the RM and ask for a scoring call override? (Would it make a difference? The RM should make the call based on the rules, too...)

The rule says you can't review previous scoresheets. It doesn't appear to say you can't use your own knowledge of previous scores, although I know some people who consider themselves hard core literal rule-followers like to treat it that way.

I have to say tho, that if I *know* the previous hits, but they are the same caliber, I would treat that in a way that the shooter wouldn't feel screwed over. If he didn't believe I could make the call, I would probably go for the reshoot. If he was satisfied, I would probably call what I know is right. That's an unpleasantly gray area. No one wants to force a shooter to reshoot when he has a really good run. there's just not much excuse at a big match for not taping all the targets, even tho it always seems to happen a couple times.

Yes, you can call the RM (he is the final decision maker on all scoring problems.)

  17. I am glad to see the BOD coming out with a response so quick. If this is just a routine "reconcilation", then why would a 21 year USPSA bookkeeper (or whatever position she held) resign and in the letter of resignation refer to the $144K.

Now the Face Book posting is not available ? (The letter is still available on the phobucket link)

  18. Why USPSA would allow any credit card with a limit above 3k is beyond me. If they are legal payments-USPSA membership probably paid 3% for each transaction costing approximately $2200 in fees.

Huh? The vendor pays the credit card fees, not the purchaser.

Nothing wrong with a high limit on a credit card, as long as it's properly managed. The staff hotel bill for a national match could easily reach many many thousands of dollars. Why shouldn't USPSA get rewards points that they can then use to offset the cost of staff business travel or other free benefits?

you really think the vendor does not build the cost of CC into the bill?

you think USPSA is tracking reward points when they have no receipts for $144K.

  19. Gun Nuts Media posted the resignation letter on their website with the spreadsheet of the "suspected" transactions. 2 transactions alone accounted for nearly half of the funds. ~$34K and ~$37K, I know my company would allow an expense report to pass through like that without receipts.

Why USPSA would allow any credit card with a limit above 3k is beyond me. If they are legal payments-USPSA membership probably paid 3% for each transaction costing approximately $2200 in fees.

Assuming they are legal expenses--a USPSA check should have been issued and the check should require two company officials to sign.
