Whenever I am on the internet and I compare myself to other shooters, I am always better. But then reality hits.

Let's not judge people on video. Instead, how about we just show up to prove ourselves that way, huh? It is one of the reasons I NEVER use Strava because that is not competition, but a false sense of it. When it is you against the other shooters on that day, in that competition, you get humbled. Some of the most amazing local shooters here in Reno look slow, but they are actually really fast and accurate. I never assume I am better until I actually beat some of them, which hasn't happened yet.

Guys, I mean no harm here. Relax. I know my place and I do know who these shooters are. No need go get all passive aggressive on me.

Still, I have a valid point: these shooters were pretty slow in that classifier. It is an objective matter: they could barely make M today with those times (assuming they had all A's). Its math. Can't argue with math.

First off, most of those guys *are* today's shooters. Second, my impression is that top shooters don't typically burn down classifiers or short courses in big matches. Those are stages where you can lose more than you can gain. Also I think that was the first time that stage was used. I think no one had really shot anything like that in a match before, so they were a little conservative over the no-shoot on the middle target. As it turns out, you can shoot it hella faster than many of them did, especially if you're not worrying about making a mistake that lets Nils pull away. Heck, I botched the reload and shot it in 8.74 last weekend (16A, 1C, 1D) and I'm 58.

I worked that match btw,  Burn it Down (stage 15?). Sadly, I only see Paige and I think John in the vid, and not me. That was the first year I shot USPSA and the first major match I worked. Big fun.

It was the first time I ever shot that classifier too, and I sure wasn't trying to burn it down, but I was faster than some of these top level shooters. Heck, there were at least 10 guys in our local club that were as fast or faster than some of the shooters in the video. This is weird. Are there any statistics how USPSA shooters' speed changed over the years?

  3. I have come across this video below, which shows 2012 Limited Nationals. There you can see some of worlds best shooters doing their business. One thing I noticed though is the classifiers they shot don't look impressive at all. For example, at the 17 min mark, you can see them shooting The Roscoe Rattle, and the average time was something like 8.5 seconds, with one shooter finishing in 9.2 seconds! I am new B level shooter but shot this classifier last week in 9 seconds (11A, 7C)...I mean some of these guys looked super conservative and kind of slow...what am I missing here??

  4. how is your tungsten grip modules holding up? i noticed some major dents and scratches at the magazine insert area (not the iron magwell, but the bottom of the TXG grip)

We tried to train outside last winter but there never were any weekends  that weren't crap weather wise.  The weekday after work sessions are toast once the clocks go forward.

I'll be dryfiring like crazy, I need to get out of B class!

my indoors classifiers keep dragging me to C class, need to get out of that myself

Same, my classifiers are worse indoors.

What are you going to do up here in winter?  Everyone is in the same boat.

my plan is to brave the weather and shoot outdoors only...will shoot the matches when the weather allows, and train by myself when they are cancelled

otherwise I am starting to lose motivation for shooting because of the weird results I am getting indoors

Interesting. If you read through “CHA-LEE’s Tale” over in the Range Diaries section, he talks about how the worse lighting indoors makes it harder to shoot well, and that it affects him more with irons than with optics.

yes, the difference in irons is bigger, but there is still a drop in performance with the dot if i shoot indoors

my classifiers, for example, are around 65-75% outdoors, 50-60% indoors, the variability in match results or between stages is also huge indoors, i can win a stage and then completely trash another one when indoors, but outdoors it is pretty consistent....i hate indoors

  8. Relatively new, C-B level shooter here. I noticed that my performance at indoor matches is considerably lower than it is in outdoor matches. Several indoor classifiers I shot were mid C, but if outdoors I comfortably make high B. I also noticed that other people also shoot well below their current level if they are indoors. Any ideas why this may be happening? I attribute that to the poor lighting in the indoor range I shoot at. For example, there is this particular dark corner that I always hit the no shoot, and overall I feel like I get a lot less visual info indoors than outdoors.

Personally, I decided to not shoot indoors anymore. Any others that have the same experience?

By the way, it’s extremely simple to drill out the front sight to .060 and install a larger, more easily available fiber which is much brighter than the stock one. Many of my friends who run the X5 in competition have done this. One of them works for TRUGLO and gave me the idea.

this is interesting, do you have more info on the procedure for how to drill?

You will need to re-zero once the shroud is installed.

Now that enough time has passed since last post, how do you guys like the Romeo 1 shroud? Is it worth getting?

Seems silly to me that this is approved for prod and CO. I already had one for my lim p320 so I’ll be running it on my CO gun. I wouldn’t buy one specific for CO. The X5 with pedal fits in my comp tac holster

did you do anything to the holster to fit it? my comptac doesnt want to take it (the gun hangs high in the holster, almost exposing the trigger)

It is awesome! Yest to CO. No go on IDPA though

i got the GoGun thumb rest and I like it too, except now the gun doesnt fit into my CompTac holster, how did you solve this problem??

  13. 33 minutes ago, Posvar said:

I bet you could find one to fit. Maybe call Dave Dawson before you start drilling. I just checked mine and the site is wider but the fiber is the same size. The larger blob method has helped me but I mainly shoot outside.

I think the dawson front sight has a thickness of 0.09, and the fiber is 0.04. Chances are you will mess it up before you can fit 0.06 fiber.

Dawson has thicker front post, but their fiber sizes are always 0.04

  14. Bigger blob doesnt do much for me in indoor ranges. Since the rear notch is very wide in the original dawson sights, i thought i could just use a larger post/fiber in the front

  15. Has anybody replaced the front sight on the X5 with a wider one? I feel like the fiber insert is a little too small to pick up quickly in low light conditions, I am thinking of replacing it with a trijicon front sight (trijicon has 0.06 fiber diameter instead of the 0.04 on the dawson)

For peace of mind, go with new screws. Keep in mind that those can be reused multiple times because they’re not subjected to high torque values. Just clean up the threads using acetone or alcohol and then it can be safely reinstalled along with a dab of blue loctite.

yeah, i figured that peace of mind is kind of important in this sport

i torqued to 28 in.lbs (with blue thread locker)

i see too many slide mounted optics flying off or failing in other ways, so i wanted to double check

i think i will order new screws and install them fresh

i should also mention that i am quite disappointed with romeo 1 so far, this is the second one i am installing on my x5, the previous one had electronic issues (up button wouldnt work if the battery cap was tightened above 5in.lbs) and the glass lost its stability in its housing after 500 rounds or so  (it clicked and moved back and forth when i pressed with my finger during cleaning)

Not on weapons optic screws or bolts.

We use a lot of those TTY screws and bolts on our turbine engines especially on the combustion area because of the heat generated. The bolts gets fatigued and will just shear off if they’re reused because they had been stretched beyond their elasticity.

By the way, you said you torque the screws down to 30 ft lbs? The manual states that it should only be torqued to 30 in. lbs

i torqued to 28 in.lbs (with blue thread locker)

That really only applied to “torque to yield” bolts. You are good to go

ok thanks, but i thought all weapon optic bolts were torque to yield, otherwise why do we even bother with specified torque values?
