  1. Thanks for all the info. I found some info in the FAQ section. I think it was Words? Anyway there is a link to it above. I had the impression the Brian's book was beyond what I was looking for, but it seems to be spot on.

I also read somewhere here the feeling of pushing through. Refering to gripping the pistol and not totaly locking out your elbows but really close. That is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks to all for the guidance.

Brian's book is excellent but more about the cerebral aspects of shooting.

I suggest Matt Burkett's videos also. He is an great teacher of gun handling basics and able to show you how to break down the movements into steps. He has one targeted toward IDPA and how to deal with concealment garments.

  2. I'm shipping Francisco's 500 rounds of nats ammo to Vegas in the coming days. After the match he should have less than 200 rounds left (not many reshoots at nationals). Francisco is 16. Would he be able to bring back his leftover ammo in his checked luggage or would it be a problem because of his age?

    Southwest Airlines.

    Nemo

Check the airlines policies. http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/childtip.html. Southwests seems loose for minors over 12 ( per their rule over 12 rules and polices are same as an adult). I have read others that are very restrictive for any minor and some specifically mention no firearms or ammo.

  3. Yep!! I got a box of their SR primers Box. Had "223 small rifle primers" on the box and were silver in color. At least 4-5 out of a 100 will fail to fire. Most will go the second time, some take several tries and some never go. At fist I though is was me not seating deep enough, then made sure next time to seat them. No luck. Now I only use for practice.

  4. I just bought 38 super comp brass from Dillon and the package says 38 super comp but when I looked at the back of the brass it says 38 super auto +P. All my other super comp brass says super comp on the back, so before I call Dillon and tell them they sent the wrong one I wanted to make sure it wasn't the same thing. Is it 38 super comp or is it just 38 super? Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Brian.

Check the rim to be sure. Super will stick out wider then shell side, super-comp will be flush. Need trick to check: Grab a 40 S&W shell and try to insert the rim into the 40.The super rim will not slide into the 40 shell and a super-comp will drop right in. If you have a case gauge for super-comp the supper will sit with the rim raised above the gauge. And when all else fails measure the rim diameter. Super ~0.0406 Super comp ~0.386.

  5. Had some problems this week with 45 ACP range brass loads not fitting the gauge. I'm using a Lee 4 die set in a Rock Chucker; is there a good way to make sure the entire case is sized right? EGW sells the Lee Undersize die in 45, should I consider that?

    Leam

Make sure the sizing die just kisses the shell plate to ensure it is sizing all the way down the shell.

I am not having a problem with my gun, but when I make some ammo for friends, she has a problem with feeding in her Dan Wesson Patriot. 45 acp. I have not had a problem with my Para 14. Maybe her barrel has tighter tolerances?? I am currently using the latest version of Hornady titanium dies with decap/resize in station one, bell in station two, powder in station three and bullet seating/crimp in station four. Currently, Station five is not used.

    Thanks again.

    Steve

Like a few others have said, could be an length issue. Could also be mag's or extractor, does factory ammo have problems feeding? What are the "feeding problems" ie. is the bullet nose diving into the feed ramp, jamming into the top of the chamber halfway in, almost fully in the chamber with the slide just out of battery.

  6. What is its primary use? When is it preferred over welding?

In general to connect or bond two metals parts together. Technical not soldering but a brazing operations(>800 def F). A brazed connection can be taken apart without damage to either part, not likely with a weld. Brazed connection will generally only have about 1/3 the strength of the base metals so will not be as strong as a weld.

Connecting a comp to a barrel, attaching a sight to slide may be brazed.

Repairing a cracked slide or frame would be welded.

And, happy birthday to the next Junior GM. :)( Hey Adrian you have exactly 1 year to make GM before your 18th birthday! Get started TODAY!) :P

    What Keen Said.

    Happy B-day Adrian.

  8. o and as to where my second and other shots are hittin..its all over..lol no general area. first shot is usally a good solid A hit

    chefcs5

Sounds to me like you are doing "Double Taps" ie. one sight picture and just yanking the trigger several times.

All shots taken need to have an "acceptable sight picture" before pulling the trigger. When you see where the sights at the moment the gun fires you will then know where the shot went. If you are seeing the sights then you should be able to hit where you are aiming.

Just do the basic drills. WATCHING THE SIGHT ON EACH SHOT and shooting only as fast as you can see.

  9. I have a bunch of Shooting star mags that will not work proberly.

But if i load them with 8 rounds, then the two first rounds will nosedive 99.5% off the times and that sucks big time.

Even i if i use 230gr RN bullets there is a big risk that they will get stuck on the frame.

    Ola

Compare the mag lips of the ones that do not work with ones that do. Most likely the ones that don't work are out of spec. With Shooting stars specifically check the back where the rim sits. From my experience they will bulge here a little and the bullet will sit up not set back all the way in the mag. Just reform and make them straight and they will work.

  10. I don't have the problem but I know many race drivers and motocross riders use anti-perspirant on their hands and even their foreheads. May be worth a try. It works for them.

That's basically what Pro Grip is, just concentrated and with out the perfume.

  11. This is a jpoint related question:

How big is the glass in comparison to the c-mores? I assume its not an issue regardless of it's size?

Jpoint lens is a little smaller (and plastic not glass).

The benifit over the c-more is that it is closer to the barrel line so have almost no parallax error like the c-more.

Down side, plastic case and lens which will scratched easily and dot will not be a round as a result (star pattern).

I personally like the new Burris Fast fire. Almost the same as the Doctor sight at less then half the cost ($199 vs $495), same mounting pattern as the Doctor, Glass lens, Metal case.

  12. It looks like the belling was removed, but is this all I need to do?

No. the crimp die is also sizing the reloaded round ( bottom insert).

The tiny tiny tiny appearance of a gap between bullet and case seemed to get smaller and gone with a tiny more adjutment, but on the upstroke the press jams. Its a metallic clunc when I move the handle a bit and start the downwards motion of the shellplate.

I have only had this happen when I load New brass.

Isn't the inner piece the actual crimping part of the die?

    Yes.

Do I need that piece at all, or will the sizing part of the FCD do the job?

Yes, if you want a taper crimp.

  13. Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be callin' Chuck at SC to order a few.

    DaG

    Mind sharing your source?

Chuck as SC would most likely "Shooters Connection" and can be found in the "Vendor Tent" or see link below.

My experience, as well as others, it great service at a fair price. Place you order and it usually ships same day. I have never waited longer then 2 days, unless I order on Friday.

  14. When I purchased my new first 1911, I dropped the slide all the time. Trigger job lasted less then 6 months before started to follow and double. Replaced sear and hammer, stopped dropping the slide and it has lasted for over 5 years. Know of several others that have had the same thing happen.

    Just my experiences.

  15. I was one of the CRO's on 8 - Order in the Court, the other two; Chris and Dennis made it easy on me. Learning from all of the National Staff CRO's was a real treat.

Every shooter was just great, polite and helpful. Watching the two youngsters shooting with the big boys was fantastic. I was really excited for those two. I sat with the young man at lunch and he addressed me as 'Sir' in every sentence - I know there are proud parents.

I had the pleasure of shooting with Dave, Bob, Phil, Sarah, and Adrian.

Been shooting with Adrian since he started about 18 months ago and he is alway very polite, willing to learn, and listens to what the betters shooters have to say. He will be giving the Big Boys a run for their money in the next year or so. Unfortunately the chrono gods were not very nice at this match.

WOW!! What great competitors "The Big Boys" are. Discussing how to shoot the stages, encouraging each other and the juniors, pasting and setting steal all day long. We flew through 10 stages before lunch. Great stages, staff, and day of shooting.

Several issues with Palm scoring through. Scores still not correct (lim10 stage 9. How can some receive 134 points on a 60 point stage).

    A few Videos and Pictures.

My first try at editing videos together (sorry Sarah for misspelling you name in the squad picture. You shot a great match).

  16. At one local match last month a guy did the following. After finishing shooting from the prone he reholstered his pistol while still laying down. :surprise: Everyone behind him was like "OH Shit". There was no DQ. But does this 3ft rule apply since he pointed the gun right at his feet and US! I would probably call that a DQable offense regardless. Would I be right or would I be stripped of my newly earned RO credentials?

I would call that a DQ.

A good attentive RO would have noticed (he should be expecting this action due to the nature of the position) what the shooter was about to do and stopped them. One common way RO's try to prevent this action in the first place is during the walk through tell the shooters to stand up or at least return to a kneeling position before holstering.

As an RO you should make the call you as you see it. Let the shooter appeal the call to the CRO, RM and abritration if it goes that far (according the the rules). At local matches it would be most likely the person running the match. We all get it wrong some times even the most experianced RO, CRO, RM and RM/I.

  17. Hi,

can someone tell me what the main difference between the double disk kit and the adjustable charge bar for the Lee auto disk is?

The double disk kit uses two fixed volumes to adjust powder (each disk will have a series of progressively larger holes/volumes). The adjustable charge bar has a vairable volume via a sliding bar attached to a screw. Go with the adjustable charge bar so you do not have to change disks all the time.

BADD - Buzzer Attention Dumping Disorder. :roflol:

Couple of good one in this thread.

Like others have said: You are focusing on speed. In practice I have set up mini stages and found I preform best (faster time better hits) if I just try to execute my plan as smoothly as possible in stead of trying go fast. Seems slow but the timer does not lie.
