The answer to your question makes the assumption that the "State Match" is actually sanctioned. It is possible (although unlikely) that a club may hold a championship match, but doesn't go through the process of getting sanctioned. If there is no AC and no argument from any other clubs in the state, there's no rule against having an unsanctioned state championship. That being said, I don't see anything in the rulebook that says that a sanctioned match has to be open to all members. If that is correct, then a club could determine whatever entry qualification system that they want (provided that the Area Coordinator signs off on it). In the case of Nationals, it has required in the past that two sanctioned matches have been shot in the previous year. But in reality, I have never heard of a sanctioned State Championship having any kind of pre-qualificiation other than being a member and holding a valid classification in your division. The match director does have the option of not accepting Novices if he or she chooses, though.

Definitely. Only takes one high-speed shot string where the muzzle comes back down and you think, "Where #### did my red dot go?!!!" to drive home the importance of having spare FO tubing with you at the match.

Are there any sources for IDPA compliance boxes that are made out of a material other than wood?

As long as you have mental awareness to be safe while shooting, you are not too old. And don't think about being competitive. Concentrate on being 1) safe and 2) smooth. Let those principles guide you and set your standard for "fun." You may or may not eventually become competitive, but the people who win at IDPA matches are not necessarily the ones that have the most fun.

Steve, Robert Ray posted this on the IDPA Forum: http://idpaforum.yuku.com/reply/48105/-compact-magazine-base-pads---size-magazines-SSP-legal-#reply-48105 The issue is whether "factory part" refers to only the magazine, or the base plate also. Robert, in the same posting, says, "The other questions of replacing a plastic plate with a metal one, grinding down a lip, or placing a rubber pad on the bottom will be answered shortly." Interesting how "no visible modifications" starts to have a number of caveats. Personally, I think it should be that tape on the base plate is OK, but no other modifications allowed if it changes the appearance from something that replicates a factory part. But I can't convince anyone to pay me to think, so my opinions don't carry a lot of weight.

For the moment. There is a contradiction from HQ at the moment regarding this. On one hand, external modifications to a mag are not allowed unless they replicate a factory part. But on the other hand, rubber bumpers are allowed. I don't think that the "final answer" has been given yet.

My son just accepted his appointment to the Naval Academy. He had been hoping for the Air Force Academy, but the appointment hasn't arrived and he reached the deadline for having to say yes/no to Annapolis. He went through an introductory program last summer at the AF Academy, but he has zero experience with Annapolis. Can anyone who attended provide any advice about what to expect, how to prepare, and most importantly, what you really wish you knew in advance? I'm specifically looking for information that will help him acclimate faster than if he goes in blind. Thanks!

We ended up having to experiment with the swing properties a little bit and change the final plate placement. In the end, we had a hard-cover plate initially visible (at 10pm position), the non-threat at 12pm position (top position, out of sight initially), and the threat target at 4pm (also out of sight). This created the right amount of swing in both directions, as well as keeping the threat passing through the window at a reasonable frequency. The initial design too forever to re-enter the target area, and also had very few re-entries into the target area.
