  1. Some great recommendations here. OP, let us know what you end up with - I've added a fencing mask to my range bag. My first wife divorced me due to the disfigurement I've suffered as a result of hot brass to the face, but I never thought about taking control of the issue until this thread.

  2. If the base was undersize enough to allow the bullet to seat well under the intended OAL for the load, it would be (in my setup) aligned by the seating die and then crimped in place. This alone could cause a high pressure issue. With reduced neck tension due to the undersized base, it could be further subjected to setback.

With moderate .45 loads, perhaps not an issue. With a hot .40 S&W load, it certainly could be.

  3. That really sucks. We had a guy have 3 squibs at a bowling pin match a couple months ago. He packed up the gun before he destroyed it.

We used to have a guy I called the worlds most incompetent reloader at our local pin shoots. Only guy I've seen take a squib rod to the firing line. Thinking of that, I didn't see him all this summer!

I use a Hornady LNL AP, and while loading a batch today had my RCBS lockout die activate for the first time. Tossed the case, happened again. Turns out a screw had come out of the powder drop linkage leading to no powder being dropped. And to think, after 10,000+ rounds with no more than a false alarm I was about to ditch it.

  4. Hey it looks to me like you already have this whole thing pretty well figured out. Certainly much more so then some of the folks who have helpfully chimed in here? Did you just come here looking for someone to pat you on the shoulder and tell you you did right?

Calling shots on steel is like making a call on first base..? Now I've heard it all.

I was just thinking about the naivete of your comment. When was the last time you ROed a stage where some were able to fire five (5) times on target in less than a second? Ever been faced with hearing 5 extremely fast shots and their impacts but it's quite clear that the last shot did not hit the stop plate (not even its edge or the bolt) based on the sound even though the plate moved?

Ever then dig-in a bit deeper, go over the line and find that the last shot nicked the stand and being tankful that you as the RSO paint the target stand uprights between squads? How about the reverse? When one or more "cheerleaders" are calling for a mike yet based only on the sound, you know the stop plate was hit triggering further investigation if requested?

No, I didn't think so. I suspect much of this comes with experience and to a lesser degree, innate ability.

So kind of you to respond for me. Almost thought this would be a one sided discussion. Innate ability and experience - maybe we need to rank ROs. I have no doubt your be a GM RO. Probably world champ in fact.

I wonder if you shoot? Must be tough for those ROing you to live up to your standard. Or maybe you just RO yourself?

  6. Will be interesting to see who take's the ball and runs with it if it won't be USPSA.

    IDPA

    It just happened.

IDPA is asking members to decide:

Option 1: Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) – this would be for double action or single action guns. This division would be largely like SSP otherwise but the gun size would be limited to guns of M&P compact or Glock 19 size.

Option 2: Laser and Optic Pistol (LOP) – this division would allow for the mounting of a laser or slide mounted optic on the handgun. The optic would have to be mounted between the rear of the ejection port and the rear of the slide. Both single action and double action would be allowed. We might also add revolver to this division.

I think this is a troll...

  7. Step 1: Field Strip

Step 2: Spray the heck out of it with gunscrubber. Use toothbrush as needed to loosen gunk.

Step 3: Spray liberally with aerosol CLP.

Step 4: Spray with compressed air to remove excess oil.

Step 5: Dry grip with dirty napkins.

No more than once every 5-10k rounds.

  8. Yup but I only use the 627 for Steel. I still prefer my worked over 625PC for anything else. Old habits, etc ......... I'm just a big hole kinda guy :goof:

I wish these forums has a "like" button for comments like Facebook does. This one deserves a like.
    They do.

Ok, I give, how does this process work, Peter?

May just be a Tapatalk thing. I don't access on the web.

  9. Good afternoon All.

My 2 Revolvers, are a S&W 681-c-1 custom made for Action Pistol, wings and all, the other is a S&W 686 Performance Centre, with rail and under lugs.

I have always shot a 125 bullet at about a 128 power factor. sorry both are 38/357. I only just started using a revolver in 2010. Shot an auto always, I know what a goof.

But have gotten into a little ICORE at out club just north of Toronto, and will try to shoot a few matches in the US next year.

Both revolvers have scopes as well. But for sure the light bullet moving faster gives me very little recoil through the scopes. ( I am 6'-2" at about 270 ) and work with my arms all day.

For my last AP match this past September I had no choice but to load the 158 Zero, holy crap did it kill me on my score both days, the recoil was so hard and slow I shot a 470 and a 468 on the Barricade, this should have been a 480 both times, the other AP events sucked as well. I just could not control the recoil they way I can with the 125.

All I can say is that I will try to never run out of 125's again.

The 2 ICORE matches I have shot, the load and round worked great.

Did you chrono the 158 load? Sounds like you didn't reduce the powder charge enough.

  10. What about using some of the light .380 bullets when you load your 9?

I tried using some 90 grain JHPs for an open minor load. At 125 PF recoil was brutal. I'll second some 147 GR bullets and some N320 or Titegroup.

Why do people keep bringing up minor? The OP said nothing about having her shoot a match just going to the range to shoot for his b-day. This means he can run as slow of a velocity as he can as long as it cycles the slide. Single shot just isn't going to be much fun.

I agree with using .380 bullets if you really want her to shoot 9 otherwise a 22 with a red dot. That's almost day one of physic's class. Lightest object going the slowest will give you the least recoil with all other conditions the same.

As an example of how the idea that using a light bullet is best is wrong for this application.

Let's say you need to make 105 PF to cycle the slide. A load making 105 with a 147 GR bullet will be much softer shooting than with a 100 GR bullet.

Sure, a 90 GR bullet at 650 FPS would be a soft shooter, but it ain't gonna cycle the slide.
