  1. Sounds like a regional thing and also a shift in reloading behavior based on new shooters.

makes sense but I kind of miss the days when the squad worked together more. A couple times last weekend, I had to go find my dropped mags after a stage run.

maybe there is an opportunity with new shooters to instill some of the “taping, resetting, brassing” through mentorship. It might go a long way in forming community instead of focusing on an individual performance.

and yes, I was shooting single stack 40 so I had a bunch of mags dropped around the stage and was the only non-9mm shooter on the squad. Makes me an outlier ;)

  2. Not sure where this would go best so, mods, pls move if needed.

After taking some time off of shooting for family and then a very inconvenient pandemic, I have started shooting local matches more frequently.

I don’t mind getting my own brass but I was surprised over the past several matches that almost no one picked up their brass and the act of picking up a fellow shooters brass seems to be a thing of the past. Last weekend I was one of two shooters on my squad with a brass bag.

Is it the lack of components? Are so many new shooters buying factory ammo that retrieving brass is not a priority? Fewer folks reloading?

  3. I just did this today to test springs for major and minor loads in the same gun. For each load I tested 3 recoil springs. I did not have access to slomo video so I tested like this…

I tried to shoot two into an Azone at around 7 yards as fast as I could with a good sight picture and noted how far apart the shots were. Noting front sight position after a round was fired I was trying for the spring that put my front sight back on target the closest.

I then shot a plate rack to verify. Sure enough, after the first test, the spring that delivered the front sight closest to the POA (and also the closest two shots) gave me the best time cleaning the plate rack.

  4. I do use a Lee U die, so I suppose it could work the brass more than the regular die.

Chambers are on spec (both Dan Wesson).

none of my Starline brass (purchased new) had evidences splits so it is probably related to range brass of unknown provenance.

    thanks all for the input.

  5. No particular brand of case…. These are 2x Winchester and 1x federal but I own about equal amounts of These stamps plus Starline and Xtreme.

nickel plated are a different story, I typically toss those as they seem to split earlier than reg brass.

  6. Thanks for the replies.

Usually I can feel when a case splits during sizing, and if I don’t notice, I usually can feel a difference when placing the bullet on the expanded case mouth.
this photo shows some details. The bottom round made it through the progressive but failed the case gauge. The top two passed the case gauge.

so far it’s only a small percentage <0.5%.

  7. I’ve been reloading 40 for 6 years and have been through about 8k rounds per year. I case gauge all my reloads. I just got a stack of primers and loaded up some major and minor 40. I found a number of split cases during QC and case gauging.

Most didn’t case gauge and were easy to spot. But during QC I found a few that passed the case gauge.

question: have any of you ever shot a round with a split case (case with a crack/material failure)? If so, what happened?

I don’t think I missed any, but it made me wonder about the outcome of missing a split case.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience or thoughts on the matter.

I use from 4.6-4.9gr of N320. Bu I also have a COL of 1.185". You'll have to increase you COL in order to go past the 4.1gr max. Most people load 40 S&W long in limited guns. 1.125" is too short for limited guns.

    I use a similar load 4.5 N320 under 180 blue.

My OAL was 1.14” since I shot in both CZ and 2011 limited guns. @Postal Bob long OAL may not fit his Italian limited gun.

@Goat259 what is the longest you can load and still fit a Tangfolio mag and chamber?

Is the appropriate locator button in place?  Should be a #2.

If a #3 button is in place on 40/10mm it will give the case that off center appearance.

#2 is in use. But, these are stuck at sizing station, haven’t even gotten to a station with a button :)

    can we see the primer.?

    what was the load?

Is it every 4th case that has this issue?

No pics of the primers in hand but they appear fine.

load is 7.3 grains of CFE Pistol under Xtreme 180 RNFP. Vel. 1137fps.

all the cases seem to have this issue.

  11. Hi all,

I have recently started reloading 10mm. I have a Glock 10 mm long slide and have been experimenting with loads. I have in the past loaded tens of thousands of rounds of 9mm and 40 caliber but this is my first 10mm experiment.

I am having a helluva time getting even half the case resized. Have stopped out of concern re stuck cases.

my brass measures .420” at the mouth and .422” at the web, slightly undersized from spec (.423” per hornady 9th ed.)

my once fired brass is .425” at the mouth and .433” (!) at the web.

when I try to size the lubed brass, the die is sizing the mouth to .418” and gets bound about halfway to the base.

I have reloaded thousands of glocked 40 rounds with a Lee “U” die but have not encountered such heavily glocked brass in 40 as this 10mm chamber appears to produce.

anyone been here before and have a solution?

    - different die?
    - pass through sizing?
    - something else?

    press: Dillon 550

    die: Redding full length 10mm

    case: starline 10mm, once fired

    pistol: Glock model 40

  12. I have carried an alloy framed 9mm commander daily for four years. I use a low profile Wilson mag well a Milt Parks versamax IWB holster that is hands down my favorite of all time.

I “upgraded” from a series of other options (j frames, Compact & subcompact plastic guns, CZ 75 compact) that were less comfortable and didn’t conceal as well.

regarding safety manipulation, if you train enough and properly, and the pistol fits your ergonomics, I think you can easily learn to get the grip right and drop the safety. YMMV

regarding capacity, 11 rounds in 9/38 is about the same as many of the new slimline plastic models. I usually carry an extra mag in an OWB holster.

For me, it came down to a combination of considerations:

    - is it comfortable to carry all day?

    - does it and your holster choice conceal for your intended use/season/clothing?

    - do you shoot it well? And will you train with it?
    - do you trust it?

IMHO, these ^^^^ are almost more valid than capacity & some caliber discussions.

other considerations could also include rail/light/red dot capability as these are increasingly a part of the carry gun calculus.

  13. I’ve had 4 DW 1911s. I’m a fan.

Currently own 2 full size 40s and a 9mm commander for EDC. Probably 18k rounds through the lot of them. Well built and accurate.

what really sold me was the service. One required a little work from the factory, but that was accomplished with zero cost and great service. They have always been really responsive and helpful.

  14. Have not had a chance to load any 115s with either powder, but I appreciate the info.

So far I’ve loaded about 5k 147 grain 9mm minor with CFE-pistol and found it works great with 4.0 grains in a variety of pistols and PCC, 131 PF. I haven’t noticed this load to be exceptionally dirty, it’s accurate in all my pistols and the recoil impulse feels quite manageable. And, if N320 is cleaner and softer shooting, awesome, sounds like a great suggestion.

The 115 load will be mainly for PCC (16”) and carry optics (4.7”) if/when I run out of 147s.

  15. Hi all,

I am trying to make the most of my component situation. I’ve acquired a stack of berry’s 115 rn and I have a decent stock of CFE Pistol and VV N320.

I’ve used CFE Pistol for my regular minor production loads but have run out of my favored 147s.

Any good combos you all have used with these powders and 115s?

Again, looking for minor load data starting points to eventually get to 131pf. Yes, I have a chrono :)
