  1. Lead works for me. I use a lead bullet for practice and or moly and moly for matches.

The cost difference on a yearly basis for bullets is over 2K for me, comparing MG 180 vs. Lead/moly 180's. that's 2000.00 that stays in my pocket, buys food or gas, or pays for a trip.

That is just for 40 caliber, i shoot others though not as frequently.

For 9mm, i can find jacketed bullets at reasonable prices.

  2. solo appears to be cleaner with lead in 9mm 40 and 45. i"ve used clays with 45 extensively and like it. less dirty and sooty than TG. Solo seems to leave less carbon residue.

I've used e3 in my Limited loads for the last two years and got turned on to solo by a friend. i like it, feels the same, takes a bit more powder but is less spikey than the e3.

Clays with a 200 LSWC at 4.2 gr is a wonderful load.. or about 3.6gr with a 230 lead RN.

  3. Yep.

I have a dan wesson in .40. and other 40 single stacks. i load to 1.185 with a 180 moly lead TC. feeds and runs fine in all of the guns.

If you are having the issue of the round sticking, you are loading too long, back it off as this will cause pressure issues, which could lead to a very disastrous incident.

  4. I've run several magazine types in my 40 SS's...My earlier trojans that had the Tripp modifications worked well with the tripp mags...Though i had to modify (remove metal) where the slide stop hit to get them to run reliably and not lock back with one round left. getting 10 mags to work properly took several runs to the range. bullet profiles also made a difference, some Truncated cone designs would interfere with the function as well.

The latest Tripp mags with the all metal feed lips in 10mm have worked the best for me. they will not run 9 in the gun but 8 is fantastic.

  5. Don't shoot it, it will be worth more. you are looking at upward of the high 700's to low 800's. Less if used. Do you have the case and paperwork as well?

I always check gunbroker and the S&W forum for current prices on firearms.

  6. I think most shooters here on this forum are able to tune their own feed lips. the specs of the mags are well known and easily corrected if out of spec.

Getting the feed lips right can be tricky - especially on SVs (which have different feed lips than STIs). And you have to be real careful that there are no little dings or imperfections for the round to get hung up to keep it from chambering smoothly.

I've never had a problem. i figure if i can reconstruct someones ankle or foot i can at least handle a mag tune.

  7. The only easy way to get 21 is to buy and SV tube and bolen follower, spring and 3mm basebad.

Otherwise you have to go the custom route. No disrespect to the tuners out there, IMHO they are not worth the cost just to get 1 more round. I have >10 mags with the aforementioned combo that hold a reloadable 21 with no custom tuning.

An STI mag runs 50$, grams follower 16$, and a Dawson basepad at around 30$ has you at 96 bucks for one mag...an SV setup with bolens runs about 115$. That my friends is a lot of money for just 1 mag. If i can get my own mags to run 21..Why do i need them tuned?
