  1. Thanks, i love the star! I could have swore i had a miss on the white papers, but after letting me sweat it the director admitted I cut a 1/16" piece out of the edge. Im hoping that I can run my new (to me) 625 JM.
  2. We shoot this match once a month and until this match, I was always the only revolver shooter. After competing against Hi-cap and Limit-10 classes, and winning all but 1 match, now there are 2 more revolvers and a potential 3rd participating. I really like my 7 shot 686 but couldnt shake wanting the 625 JM and after watching my videos for improvement, realized the time difference in reloading will greatly offset the 6 shots. Here is the link, hope this works...
  3. It seems backwards to me. Wouldnt a guy have a more equal field in 6 minor and 8 major? What am i missing? On another note, im shooting a 686 pro 7 shot..where does it fit in all this?
  4. Ok, nowmthat i have done a bit of youtubing, is there ever a six shot neutral match (think i said that right). Or will the 8shot always dominate. Asking with Icore and USPSA in mind. From the videos i watched, IDPA didnt seem to trip my trigger as much as the others...
  5. I guess they define it as a pistol that you would either buy for home protection or for carry. I am under the assumption that an Uzi or a full unlimited built gun woulndt be acceptable. With that said, it seems like i am inbetween the two models i mentioned. I really appreciate the response tho as i will most likely be buying SOMETHING, i just dont know what. I have never shot any sanctioned matches and therefore have no idea which type i will like.
  6. My 686 7 shot is cut for moons already, Is what I have now close enough to the 8 shot. That I should be looking into the 45 caliber?
  7. So this year i started my 2nd year shooting my club's Practical Pistol match. Its basically a 3-4 stage, 24-28 hits on steel plates, including a texas-star. Its unlimited shots to get your required hits. Right now im shooting a 5" 686 SSR an am having fun coming out as winner against 10-20 guys shooting limit10 and high cap guns. Match director actually stated that my revo is in fact a "practical pistol" by everyones definition, and i will be using it for deer hunting/bowling pins/night stand protection. So fast forward to my feelings at this point...i LOVE shooting revolvers and am now looking into a few S&W models for the same matches, and possible try my hand at pretty much ANY sanctioned matches that are here fairly close to Western Iowa (6hrs or less). I really think that the 625 would be great for my club matches although i really would like it cut for moon clips. On the other hand, a 627 model with the 8shot would be nice too, again, cut for moons. I have tried looking into matches that i would travel to shoot and determine what gun fits those types of matches but strike out, or am not strong in google-fu. The 45acp would hammer the steel and Bpins at my range which i would shoot the most often....what is really the mostly widely accepted/useful model? Im decent at reloads and accept the challenge of the 6 shots... My best time was 35 seconds and 27 shots with 4 stages and 1 miss. I ask because i want one or the other and both are apples-oranges in their uses.
  8. Hhmmm, is there a big butt grip without the hook?
  9. I understand, and while I don't care my placing as much as my own time. Last year I shot same matches with a 9mm M&P and am basing my time now off of my time last year. I have a friend who is similarly equipped and we see the match as a was to better ourselves. I beat myself up over my s screwups in reloading and missing NOT my finish time. I don't care if I'm last as long as I do my best. If I get myself running good, I will travel to actual revolver matches. Best I have is this to better myself. So now I seem this is not following what I'm looking for, yes, I am looking for a fast running revolver set up, understanding PF is required in formal matches, but want to beat the recoil impulse. YouTube doesn't illustrate this and is why I asked. If I had a 22 revolver similar to my 38, I would work on my technique with it rather than start low and work my loads up to PF levels accepted in matches you guys shoot.
  10. My range doesnt have a pf at all and want to know if running a 45 at below minor pf or at it will get me faster, and have read that the 45 is faster to load period. So im basically asking, and what has been answered already, with a faster reload, can a 45s recoil be low enough to make it more controllable and yet be faster reloading to the point i could possibly run it faster than my 686 in 38 spl. I also read in other forums that moonclips work very good with the 45 brass, but am going to be trying some Starline brass in 38 short colt this week to see if i can run a bit faster reload. If i get to the point that im running good and am happy that i dont make a fool of myself, i would like to shoot other ranges and matches, but i need to put more timed rounds down range.
  11. So, here is the layout, I shot last weekend a practical pistol (steel) match. 4 stages, one a texas star, and all total was 26 hits for record. They allow as many shots as needed to complete, and with my 7 shot 38spl with moonclips, I ran the course in 35, 38, and 43 seconds. i was the only one shooting revolver and was up against the 2 classes, double stack and single stack. I signed up for both and won both classes. 2nd place was a full 10 seconds slower and was a Glock armed shooter. My question is, is there any reason to move up into a 45 caliber revolver to improve my time? I ran a similar course in 26 seconds with my M&P 9mm last year and wanted the challenge of a revolver and now am a total convert.
  12. I've been watching about any youtube videos i can to see the recoil and try to compare it to my 686 proseries 38spl. I am using sub-minor loads for my club since they don't care as long as the plates fall over. Can some one tell give me a comparison?
  13. I already have the 686 pro series that's cut for moons so I'm set.
  14. I have been pretty confused, and not having a hornady reloading manual oesnt help. 38 short colt with moonclips will fit in my 38 cylinder?
  15. Yea I am using Berry's 100 grn .356 bullets right now over 3.4 grns of 700x. I just was thinking a smaller faster revolver would be nifty.
  16. I would like to see what you guys have put together. I now shoot a 686 pro in 38special and will continue, but I am thinking really hard that buying a model 10 and having all the work done to one and adding a holosight just for a steel clanker would be really cool.
  17. I know WST is available so I may try that one first. Thanks guys
  18. Right now I am using 700x but would like a powder that shoots around the 3-4 grains powder that meters better. Power pistol? What do you guys use?
  19. So right now i'm shooting .356 38 bullets out of my 686+ pro series. Im doing great except for my dumping of my moon clips. What brass is short enough to use that will allow my extractor to fully dump my clip? If i cut 38 special brass down (hear it is a b!+h) will using the smaller diameter bullet help me NOT turn my brass down? Or what other brass could i just buy and run since its cut for moons? Thanks
  20. Meaning avoid winchester brass, or all other brass than winchester?
  21. Alright, well i got a great deal on a 686 SSR 5" 7 shot S&W. I haven't shot it yet but i hope to real soon. I want to get more moon clips, and I may either red dot scope it, or install fiber optics...at this point, i think i had better search the forums, and maybe post a new thread of this.
  22. Im kinda holding to the 38/357, i have the reloading components for it and like its hunting usefulness. Is the 686 the best all around model?
  23. I used the Ruger security-six with Barnes bullets and got 2 deer last season. Im in Iowa so its shotgun only for the deer hunting and to be honest, 80yd buck (standing still) was a very confident shot. Both deer had full penetration as well, so the power isnt a factor for me. I am still inbetween the Smith and Ruger revolvers as i can load them super light for the steel matches...Ruger has the one model, the Smith models are vast and was fishing for a model that covers my uses...
  24. I knew there would be questions, haha...i mostly shoot multi stage steel and understand the 45 route but i fear that the range of the 45 is shorter than the full 357 mag loads. I do also want to have the most accurate pistol i can, tho it seems that neither Smiths or Rugers are really lacking in the accuracy department. On steel tho, I will be hopefully shooting lead bullets with light powder charges as my range doesnt differentiate major/minor loads.
