  1. I currently have a 21" barrel on my Benelli and was thinking of swapping in a 26" for better velocity and accuracy. Anybody have a recommendation for best barrel length for open class shotgun?

I'm waiting for the Akdal or Saiga guys to come by this thread.

I have a Versa Max in 26". My +8 Nordic tube arrived yesterday, so if I get Open Crazy, I'm part of the way there already.

  2. Regardless of what you choose, practice will provide the most valuable. If you are comfortable with you hold-overs or dialing then you will do well in the match.

First 3-gun match is this Saturday. A USPSA pistol match the following weekend. Then another 3-gun the weekend before Texas. In between, some range time and some coaching from a local Police and SWAT instructor. He did sniper work too. Time management between now and then will be my limiting factor, which is fine. I want to be the weakest link in the chain, not my gear.

Looking forward to getting started, identifying the weaknesses, and taking corrective action.

I deeply appreciate this community's support and advice!

  3. Depends on your budget. If its $2300 get the Benelli 3Gun and be done with it. Benny is doing them anyway so the mods you would do to the base M2 would be the same anyway.

If you are trying to save a schekel or two...The FN is a great platform. Send the carrier and trigger group off to CRums to weld up the lifter and give you a better trigger. Dremel up the loading port and you are off to the races with every bit as competitive platform for about $1200

    +1

Think what you could so with the money saved. Nice rifle, good pistol, optics for rifle, tons of ammo, some range memberships, etc, etc. For example, getting the FN and having the two modest after market items done would get you almost all the way to a Loki 3-Gun or Stag 3G model rifle, compared to just getting either of the M2 options. The Mossberg JM Pro 930 would be even cheaper, I think. But that doesn't have a track record like the FN.

I'm only looking at it from a financial point of view, not as someone with experience on the two platforms in question from the original post. I've only shot Rem 870, CZ 712 and Benelli SuperNova, to date. Remington Versa Max range time on Tuesday. But that gun has a lifter like the Devil's Own BBQ fork. Just practicing darn near speared by thumb! It's just as dangerous as it looks.

Anyway, I'd simply recommend you think about your entire kit (guns, accessories, and such) to make your decision. Obviously if you could try some different shotguns that would be optimal. Good luck.

  4. Good New Update:

First, a big thank you to this community, not just a forum, but a community. The offers to help and the assistance have been heartening.

Second, through collective action it looks very likely that I will have a reasonable set up for match day a week from tomorrow.

Finally, I should have a small amount of time to practice with this gear as well as shakedown the new rifle parts.

I've ordered a holster with some improved retention but will fail back to the Fobus if needed. Belt, caddy backs, and AR pouches should be here in time.

Again, thanks to everyone that has made this possible. Counting down the days to my first match!!

  5. Not the position in which I wanted to be. I need an inexpensive alternative to my planned (now future) Safariland ELS system. Nobody that I can find has all the needed components in stock (actually hardly any components), so I need a "Plan B" to that.

For this one match, I will be shooting an M&P 40 compact, M&P15 Sport, and Benelli SuperNova 24"

I have a Fobus paddle holster for the 40 compact but I'm nervous about how it will retain under certain match conditions. I also have a Fobus two magazine holder for the gun. Should I be getting something else temporarily? What would you recommend?

I may have to accept slow speed on the shotgun reloads this time out. I've got no caddies. I will have the TWiNS 12 shot double stack caddies, but I ordered them with no backing since I was planning to use ELS connections!! Should I use some form of pouch?

I'm so frustrated not being able to get what I want as my long-term goal in a timely fashion. I appreciate any assistance or recommendations.

    AUGH!!!

    Thanks,

    Mike

  6. This probably goes without saying, but make sure to shoot it a bunch after all of your mods are done and before heading from NC to TX. Nothing like figuring out what's wrong with a gun at a match :)

    ~Mitch

Amen, brother. I'll shoot the heck out of it and give it a wicked shakedown. Fortunately the NC matches are a modest drive for me. If it craps the bed in Texas, I'll be disappointed, but have more time for my old friends in that area. I think all the parts will get here by Friday and I'll start in on the rework and live fire checkout.

  7. No problem if you do decide to switch divisions, just send us a note via support@texasmultigun.com.

    Thanks,

    Justin

Justin, thank you. I am eagerly anticipating your match in April. I hope to visit your facility in two weeks when I'm in San Antonio and Austin on business travel.

I have decided to stay in Limited for this match and the two local/regional matches before that. One has to prepare..... But no irons on this gun, it's too much a struggle to configure this for good irons.

As a final update for those that may care, I have been exploring a custom rifle for the near future but will compete with a modified M&P15 Sport for the next few matches. Cheaper in the short term and I get to see what is out there first before making a big commitment. New rifles take weeks or more anyway with production backlogs.

The final set up will be:

    • M&P15 Sport upper & lower
    • S&W factory barrel with the carbine length gas (that's what you get for buying before you know!)
    • ACS stock, as is
    • MOE+ grip, as is
    • stock trigger because it is not bad at all. Surprisingly good for inexpensive stock.
    • JP Low Mass Bolt Carrier (on order)
    • BCM Gunfighter charging handle (on order)
    • Samson Evolution 11" hand guard (on order)
    • Syrac Ordnance adjustable gas block; the new clamp style (on order. Had a nice talk with Jason about it when I called him)
    • Corvette compensator (wanted something inexpensive and fairly effective
    • Leupold Prismatic DCD, black matte

The gas block will be the most challenging thing to swap out, but it will be ok.

Thus, a future backup rifle will be born.

I look forward to seeing some of you there in Texas!!

  8. i got a true and funny story for you.

i was looking at gas guns, really liked the SX3, but no one makes open parts for it. called x-rail they said no, i asked about there FN team shooter because i am thinking i should fit, they said they only do custom parts for there team shooters. triangle said no. i called Arredondo, was told to call back the next day to talk to there shotgun guy. i did, they did nothing for SX3 or have plans to, so i said "what about the Versa Max?" he asked if that was a new winchester shotgun, i said "no" it is a remington" he had no idea about it, he google it and said by the pin placement on the pictures it should work, but depends on how wide the reciever is.

    true story.

was very surprised they did not stay on top of that kind of stuff.

Pin placement is a question that I have, also.

  9. This has been great information, so far. I'd appreciate any Brand and model recommendations to go along with the 'category' recommendations we have seen. For example, Leupold's line alone has a dizzying array of product families and so forth. Add in Vortex, Burris, etc........Makes my head spin!

I love to learn. Thank you all.

  10. I contacted Burris a few weeks ago about a speed mount for the VM as I wanted to use one for turkey season. They aren't planning on making one they replied. :angry2: Maybe that will change if there is more demand. Remington advised the Weaver # 418 base will fit. That is a 2 piece base, so depending on the optic, you will need one or two.

Thanks, Jim. Good information. I've been thinking more along the lines of the Leupold DeltaPoint over the weekend. I've got time, certainly.

Meanwhile, I hope your Versa Max serves you well!

  11. I had a very productive and enjoyable conversation with Erik within the past hour or so. We talked about some very interesting options and upgrades. I will have a final build list for him to price later today. Then we see what it looks like compared to other options. I expect it to be very competitive in the marketplace.

Regardless of what direction I choose, I encourage everyone to give Loki a thought when thinking about a new rifle or upper. It would certainly be worth the call or email to talk about it.

  12. I haven't received a return call on my voicemail to Loki early this morning. I'll send them an online message through their web site and hope to hear from them after the holiday.

Some nice looking rifles in this thread. :)

I'm sure you'll hear from LOKI soon. They have great Customer Service but Friday's are very busy days for them.

Erik called my house line and left a message. Then he emailed me with some information and an invitation to talk more. We are at the 'phone tag' stage of things. But some good ideas are being discussed in our messages, so far.

  13. Definately give LOKI a call, they offer great rifles and customer service. They can build you exactly what you want at a very resonable price.

And PM me for a little bonus if you decide to order a LOKI :)

"Member trickpony cannot receive new messages" was the error I got on PM attempt. I will give Loki a call tomorrow and get their recommendations. I hope I get through to a real person at some point. Seems like a busy time of year in the industry.

  14. Has anyone installed a Burris SpeedBead on these new Remingtons yet?

EDIT (2:40pm EST 2/17/2012): I received my Versa Max 26" today. The receiver is already drilled and tapped in four locations for optics. I doubt there would be much use for a SpeedBead mount given how the receiver is optics-ready.

  15. My new 26" should be in tomorrow.

I've ordered all the aftermarket stuff I want for it and will build soon.

Remember the interchangeable comb. If you need a higher comb, call Rem. and they will sell you one. They cost about $15.

I shot a VM waterfowl this year and it is a great gun. It will still run after being totally submerged (and drained). It was 27 degrees that day-not good.

    Dave

Would you either post a parts list of what you got aftermarket, or please PM me with those details? Thank you very much. I hope you enjoy the Versa Max and get great use from it.

  16. I ordered my 26" today. Might be here tomorrow since the distributor is very close to my local shop. If the monthly match people at Durham want to put me in Open for that, fine. :sight:

I'll big mag tube it or XRail it and go ape on the course. :-) Reload? Who needs those?

The rifle would get lots of Open toys as well then. Might was well make some tasty lemonade from those lemons!!

  17. I will be shooting the Texas Multigun as well. I have an 18" cmmg gun with a free float barrel AR. You are welcome to borrow it for the match.

Shane, that is an exceptionally kind offer. I'm very grateful. I will PM you soon.

And thank you all for your comments and thoughts. I'm waiting on my estimate from Firebird. Might call Loki, also. But the Versa Max is ordered and could be here tomorrow.

Edit at 2:04pm EST: The SCR-11 in available inventory at JP just vanished from the site. And the PSC-11 upper that I knew was sold but had not been removed from the page is now gone, as it should be.

    Back to the drawing board.....

  18. Is this going to be for competition or just "tactical" purposes? Don't really know what tactical is anymore unless your in a hot zone or law enforcement. I use a Safarialnd 6377 and its money. I would go with an open top ALS over the hood and/or sentry. I've always looked at the hood as more of the "appearance" of security. My duty rig hood comes down constantly by accident. 6377 or 6378 is my recco

For me, it will be for competition purposes only. I have two other M&P models I use for daily concealed carry. Plenty of holsters for those already. I'll go right over to the Safariland web site and check out your recommended model numbers.

    Thank you *very* much!
