  1. I have photographic lens cleaning tools on hand like a Giottos Rocket blower. That would be my first step for a debris covered optic. After that I would use either photographic lens clearer liquids and/or or a lens pen. Essentially, I would treat my Swaro like my similarly priced Nikon gear, if I were you. Good luck.

  2. Have a +5 extension on my 870. Looking for a good barrel clamp. Any suggestions?

Also, if your extension is a Nordic, the same brand clamp seems like a good idea to me. I have a +6 and a clamp on my Versa Max, both from NC. My +8 is also from NC.

Edited to add: The NC Pic rail segment is on the way to me, also. I'll try a small laser on my Open gun to see what that does. Nordic Components are like Lego sets for shotguns.

  3. So I have just perused the 10-pages and am thinking this may be the way to go. If I understand what I read, with the "spring-kit" that was mentioned above, and maybe some gas port opening, this will run everything from super powder puffs to 3" slugs? Also can this be ghost loaded?

Who makes a magazine extension for this? I think I read that Nordic Components Remington extensions work, is this correct? Does anyone have any more info or pictures of this.

What about an extended/enlarged bolt handle, and bolt release?

Thanks guys. Have only shot a single 3-gun event (charity match at the club) with borrowed a borrowed shotgun, but I am hooked

If you go to the Nordic Components web site you will find the extension tube packages and the pull down menu shows that the Benelli Nova/SuperNova, a Beretta, and the CZ712 are explicitly supported/listed. So, you are totally good to go. I checked the fit on my CZ712 Utility before I set it aside to work on other stuff. I have not trimmed my mag tube on the gun to allow the shells to pass through unhindered. It's got that little lip on it that has to be cut away or ground out of the way. I can't speak to the rest of the questions. PM me if you want to buy mine. It was test fired once or twice by the shop where I got it as a demo unit. I've switched gears and gone toward Open because of how my eyes work together....and I hate loading shotguns as much as I love to shoot them. It's a very nimble shotgun. You're cool in the NC tube set-up, not worries on that point!

  4. Ronny, many thanks. If not for me then certainly for many others. That looks like a very interesting and worthwhile optic.

PS - We have too many Mikes here. Certainly you were referring to the Original Poster. My bad. Personally, if I were shooting Tac Optics, I'd be all over a 1-6x category scope.

  5. Kurt Miller had some good things to say about the Bushnell 1-6.5x (Elite Tactical line, I think). There is a thread here about it from a couple weeks ago. I've never seen or used it, but it seemed relevant.

Personally, I just purchased a Burris MTAC 1.5-6 and a Burris FastFire III (offset mounted) for my main rifle to shoot Open.

  6. Just curious---are you all talking about 15-22 trigger replacements? I didn't think the 15-22 took a standard AR trigger group...

Actually, I believe it can. Posters at Sniper's Hide and elsewhere have had success. I'm thinking of a CMC for mine, but haven't tried it yet. I'm too busy on the actual competition rifles for the moment.

  7. I am also fairly new and am very glad I went with the FSL 12 units I have. Load 2, Load 4, more traditional weak-hand or strong-hand reload......all are options depending on how you position the shells in the FSL or how you grab them. I still don't like loading the shotgun, but this makes it much more tolerable to me. Great products! And, as you can see, Mark is very generous with his commentary and experience sharing.

  8. The issue is the company that made them ArmsTec went out of business, and they hold a patent on shotgun speed loaders, so from what I understand no one can "legally" make them but ArmsTec.

Wow, that would mean I had better keep practicing my Load Two (or Four) technique even for Open. Crud!!! :angry2: No way am I selling my Versa Max now. Thanks for the information. That saved me from buying the loading gate/guide, for now.

  9. Jeff recently did a big set of tasks on my Remington Versa Max. Bevel and extend load port, bolt release installation, trigger job, welded the lifter (beautifully), installed a rear sight on the barrel rib, +6 magazine extension tube (with clamp), and a couple of Versa Max specific tasks. Great work and he was pleasant to consult prior to the work being done.

The shipping company managed to damage the far end of my magazine extension tube despite the very good packing job done for the return shipment. Puzzles me greatly how they did that but the barrel still shoots fine.

Jeff seems to "get it" on more than one platform. I strongly recommend you contact him and ask him for his advice. He sent me images of proposed work when I asked for his recommendations based on my stated needs.I agreed to his suggestions.

  10. from what i heard today the versamax is basically a benelli m4, benelli's patent expired.

okay! that may explain it, i could not figure out way Benelli had not sued.

I'm not entirely certain how fair a comparison that is. [Edited] Apparently, mechanical patents do expire. I was not aware of that. I have no knowledge of any particular Benelli patents that may be involved. [end Edit]

With regards to my fairness comment, the Benelli ARGO dual piston design looks very much like what I see in my Versa Max. However, the multiport gas regulation in the Versa Max chamber appears to be a Remington developed feature. I'm not a patent attorney (just an engineer), but the combination of the multi-port gas system mated to the dual pistons could well be considered a unique gas-operation *system* when viewed through a proverbial legal lens.

That type of potential system enhancement has a long history in engineering & technology. As you can see from my signature block, I own both company's products. I've tried to be neutral and non-fanboy-ish here. [Addition] My technical intuition is that the complete VersaPort system could legitimately be considered a significantly enhanced design by Remington. [end Addition]

  11. I had Jeff do all the work on my 26" Versa Max. Super work. My only complaint is the mild damage in return shipping. But Jeff packed it great so I don't know what the heck FedEx Ground did to the end of my mag tube and cap to crumple them slightly. Functions wonderfully, but doesn't look as perfect as it must have when it left Jeff's shop. I need to post some pics of my Versa Max. :-)

  12. It's the thumb issue, as far as I know. My 26 inch "classic" Versa Max had a particularly viscous forked carrier. It was the embodiment of pure evil. I'm very interested in how the newer Versa Max Tactical compares.

As to the OP question. Practice loading!!!!! Buy at least a box of the Fiocchi dummy rounds and some shell caddies or shell belts of your choice. I happen to like the Load Two method devices. My particular (but very limited) experience is with the stuff from Carbon Arms. However, there are others on the market with good products.

What to do now? = Welded lifter, shell caddies or belt of your choice, check point of aim/impact matching with slugs.....that's what I keep hearing.

I forgot to welcome you both to the Versa Max "group". I look forward to your range reports.

  13. I may X-rail this sucker this summer. I've got the +8 Nordic tube sitting in my home office ready to go any time. I'm trying to convince myself that Open is the way to go for me. I like "toys" and hate loading the shotgun. LOVE shooting the shotgun, however. :D

  14. I'm growing for serious about this option. I'm thinking XRAIL and Arendondo speedloader assist bracket. The XRAIL almost seems like the easy part.

Has anyone seen a Versa Max working with a bracket?

Anyone know what model bracket was used as the starting point?

    Thank you very much,

    Mike

  15. Thanks, Pat. That's good information. I will do another analysis. Besides rifle, I'd like to load up some competition pistol ammo that might be more balanced to my power factor needs. The factory stuff I get is over done for my 5" barrel 9mm M&P Pro.

  16. Sounds like you guys need to reload ;)

I'd agree in principle particularly since I could build a load that is nicely 'matched' to my needs and my rifle. However, I simply don't have the time. Full-time job with nationwide air travel (although for the next 3 months I have Cardiac Rehab), father of 3 young kids, and a part-time masters student at University of Southern California in Astronautical Engineering (aka, evenings are homework filled). Perhaps I'm wrong on the time required. If so, I'll be glad to be wrong!! :)

Capital costs to get started are a modest/secondary concern, not my primary worry. TIme has turned out to be the more scarce commodity than money, oddly enough.

But, with what I see so far, I'm doubtful reloading would work for me based on schedule. Again, I'm happy to be wrong if someone can give realistic estimates of what new reloaders need for time. I'd reload both rifle and pistol if I could. Thanks very much.

  17. I'm NO expert at all. But let me repeat what I've picked up in recent months. Ideal angle? Look at the after-market loading chutes and that should get you the answer. It looks like something 45 degrees or slightly more to my eye. Longer speedloaders? I've seen some pros chat/post/talk about them, but have no particular information about them or their usefulness. They were 6 rounders, I seem to recall.

I've been kicking around the idea of making my Versa Max into an Open shotgun, so I've tried to tuck away these nuggets in recent months.
