  1. Like Dwight says, the weed eater line seems to work good for us. If I am RO'ing and a rimfire guy is shooting....I am fine with him showing me an empty chamber, inserting some type of OBI, and bagging it. Keith
  2. Our club uses Pocket Pro II's. The guys I usually squad with use a personal one adjusted to the max sensitivity. The rimfire handguns are never a problem. The rifles....you definitly have to pay more attention to the timer position. About the same height (or a tad lower) as the ejection port and out of the shooer's way seems to work. I put a comp on my Nordic Precision AR upper (.22 rimfire) to make the report a little louder. I run a TacSol 2211 comp on that gun. We actually did a test comparing with and without the comp. We can stand 3 foot further away using the comp than we can without it. Not that we DO stand farther away it just seems the timer is more forgiving when the comp is used. We tried this test with CC Mini-Mags and Blazers. We were very deliberate teasting this and I'm convinced it does help. This years State Steel Match I shot a 10/22 factory barrel in Iron division and a tricked out 10/22 in Open division. Both have no comp's and never had to reshoot a string because the timer didn't pick up. Keith
  3. All of the local clubs we shoot at allow it. Keith
  4. My son and I run 8moa c-mores on all of our SC guns. I thought the 4moa dot on my FastFires and Aimpoints were a little small. It would be nice if you could see a couple different sizes compared before you buy. Keith
  5. Thanks guys. I had hoped there was ....but knew better. We did shoot the Ruger Rimfire Challenge last year in Alabama. My son took Top Junior shooting OPEN guns. I will check out the Sportsman Team Challenge. I appreciate your replies. Keith
  6. Hey guys, Are .22 rifles (both IRON and OPEN divisions) shot at anything other than a local or State level? I usually shoot these in local and State matches here in Georgia. I have also shot a few in Alabama but would like to try some other states as well. I checked out the official SC website. I even emailed them twice but they didn't respond either time. Thanks, Keith
  7. Wow, you guys are TOUGH! dshooter3,I have noticed that too with .22 ammo. I shoot Blazer in my Nordic Component rifles and 10/22's. I have shot 29,000rds through just my Nordic match gun. They have the same POI as mini-mags and cost less. BUT....they are pretty nasty. They lead up my Buckmarks (factory and TacSol barrels) and Glock Advantage Arms conversion so badly that after about 190-200 rounds accuracy goes south. We can get through a match OK and they get cleaned after every range session anyway. All, Thanks for the responses! Keith
  8. Yup, it's all relative. The flip side is I have shot in 104 degrees and about 80% humidity. That's an extreme but, I'll take the heat over the cold any day. I think about 75 and overcast is about a perfect shooting day for me. thanks, Keith
  9. Here in Georgia, the coldest I have shot in was only down to about 50 degrees. I'd assume you guys up north really deal with some crazy low temps. I dress in layers and it's not that big of a deal. Sometimes I will even wear thin gloves until it's time to RO, shoot, or paint. Stories??? thanks, Keith
  10. I got a bad box of the bulk Blazer (say that five times, fast). I don't know if the lead was too soft or the coating was bad but they would heavily foul the barrel after 50 or so rounds. This happened on two different pistols. I think what you experienced is more the norm than a bad box. My son and I shoot Blazers for steel. It has got to be the nastiest .22 ammo I have shot over 40yrs of shooting. BUT...it always goes bang. I have over 24,000 rds through my Nordic Component rifle. It doesn't seem to lead up too badly but the chamber area and receiver get filthy. When I shoot it in one of the BuckMarks or Glock .22 conversion it leads the barrel to the point of being ridiculous. I can start with a clean HG and shoot about 200rds (which gets me through a match) but accuracy goes south pretty quickly after that. When I use a chore boy and kroil it pushes out slivers of lead. I have found that Mini-Mags also always go bang and accuracy is very good. Keith
  11. I pretty much do exactly like Toolguy does. That crud is some stubborn stuff but this method seems to work OK without messing up the finish. Keith
  12. Does anyone use a protective cover for their c-more? Seems like someone would make a cover but my search-fu is coming up short. Anyone??? thanks, Keith
  13. At today's Steel Match, I made the mistake of looking at one with an 8moa dot. It got shifted in to the"gotta get one" category. Being on a tight budget I need to get the best deal. Where is the cheapest place to order one? thanks guys, Keith
  14. How did you do? I'm glad I had Gortex boots that day!!! Keith
  15. I shoot it tomorrow afternoon. I talked to a couple of guys that were there today. It has rained constantly since yesterday. If at all possible wear some type of rubber boots...no joke. Keith
  16. I had this rifle for an Apple Seed project. I replaced the Tech sight rear aperture with a standard AR15 version. Using the largest hole works like a Ghost Ring sight. Flip it over to the smaller one and makes 75yd+ shots easier. Quick target acquisition is easy with this setup. By replacing the rear sight like this I loose the ability to adjust the rear sight for elevation....only windage now. BUT, I was able to adjust the front sight enough that all of my adjustments were not anissue. The front sight has a standard AR15 post. I think a fiber optic post would be quicker to pick up. This was a simple modification that really worked out well. We have the Georgia State SC match in 1.5 weeks and I thought about shooting it in the IRON division. I have decided to just shoot rimfire rifle OPEN only. thanks, Keith
  17. I have a TS 2211 comp on the way from Matt Burkett for just this reason. I have read several of your posts and got some good info from them prompting me to try this. thanks, Keith
  18. I will be shooting a State SC Match in a month. Do you do anything differently than you do at your local level Matches? Practice more? Practice differently? Usually shoot 2 guns but only shoot one in the State Match? ETC........... thanks, Keith
  19. I have put this project on hold for now. Thanks for your reply. Keith
  20. Thanks for all of the replies. We tried different ways to hold the timer. We have found that holding it level with the ejection port and about 3 feet away from it seems to work 100%. We WERE trying to keep it as close to the EP as possible. Not sure if the blast is heard better out farther or it is picking up some of the muzzle noise too??? Since trying this technique we have had no problems with the timers. Keith
  21. I shoot the .22 rifle OPEN division. It is a Nordic Component upper on a RRA lower with an Aimpoint. Is there anyone of you guys shooting .22 IRONS? If you are what rig are you shooting. I'm mainly interested in some ideas on which iron sights you prefer. I will probably setup a 10/22 for this project. thanks! Keith
  22. John, There are Pocket Pros timers at each stage. My Pocket Pro II timer works no better. One of the other shooters has a CED and it also didn't help. All of them are cranked up to the max level. All timers are "pointed" so the pickup mic is toward the shooter. I (and most guys) are shooting the Hi Velocity ammo so it's not like we are shooting a slower, more quiet round. thanks, Keith
  23. We seem to be having some trouble at out local Steel Challenge matches. The handgun .22's seem to be loud enough to register. However...the rifles (most are either 10/22's or AR22's) are not loud enough for the timer. We have used different timers of different manufactures adjusted to the max. The RO does everything but strap the timer to the muzzle. He tries to hold it on the ejection side as close as he can without distracting the shooter. I have shot 3 strings in a row with my AR22 and and FINALLY on the fourth run it registered. Is there anything we can do to have it work more consistently? I even thought of putting a brake on it just to make it (possibly/hopefully) louder. Do you guys any certain position or technique for this? thanks to all, Keith
